Fall is in the air and what a beautiful time of
year it is in Stockton. I know what you’re thinking:
autumn colors, leaves falling from the trees, football
and holidays. While those are all nice, I am thinking
Stockton Thunder Hockey. Being a longtime season
ticket holder, I am getting my itch for hockey. When
my wife and I attended the Thunder’s first game on
December 10, 2005 (my wife’s birthday) we had never
been to a hockey game in our lives. We soon fell in
love with hockey and have been season ticket holders
ever since. If you have never been to a Thunder
game you don’t know what you are missing. The
tickets are reasonably priced and there isn’t a bad
seat in the beautiful Stockton Arena. As most of you
are aware the Thunder led the ECHL in attendance

each of its first four seasons. Last season I believe the
Thunder finished second in attendance and thus I put
out the challenge to Chamber members, take your
clients to a game and help the Thunder lead the league
in attendance in 2010-2011.
I also want to remind the readers to review
the Chamber’s recommendations on the various
propositions and be sure to vote.
So until next time…Go Thunder!
PORT CALL Greater Stockton Chamber of Commerce5
From Your CEO...by: Doug Wilhoit
I hope you all read The Record Editor’s column a few weeks
ago after he asked folks to send to him what they liked about
Stockton. Mike Klocke challenged me to write since I had not
done so two years ago when he made the same request to the
public! I think you can figure out why I did not write in then,
because of course a fifth generation Stocktonian and CEO of the
Greater Stockton Chamber of Commerce would have plenty to say
about what is good about Stockton as well as an understanding that
we also have many things to improve. So this year I accepted his
challenge, as did many others who did a fine job, but due to space
he was unable to print all of my letter. So here is the whole letter:
Mike: You got the ball rolling with a great many “things” that
are wonderful about Stockton! Many of those “things” are also to
be found in the 132 Port O Call articles I have written since 1999,
the Chamber/CVB website www.VisitStockton.org, the Chamber/
CVB Visitors guide, the weekly Chamber/CVB “This Weekend in
Stockton” blast emails, the beautiful table top book the Chamber
published in 2009, the multitude of speaking engagements I have
made from 1979 to now promoting our City of Stockton and San
Joaquin County, our annual State of the City Event, and the many
quotes I have given your paper.
I will not take the time nor space needed to list the “things”
I like, but what is most important to me: THE PEOPLE OF
STOCKTON!
I was born in Stockton in 1943 and from my earliest
memories it is the fine, diverse PEOPLE of this community that
have had the most impact on me! Growing up I was so lucky to
have been able to be around real Stocktonians’, family and friends
of my family, and through them learned early on to love Stockton
and all it had to offer!
From my early days at Snell’s Nursery School, to Woodrow
Wilson Elementary School (K-First Grade), Lincoln Elementary
(2nd to 8th grade) Lincoln and St. Mary’s High Schools, Stockton
College (before it became Delta), and working numerous summer
jobs I created friendships that are everlasting still today.
Joining the Stockton Police Department in 1967 helped me get
to really know the PEOPLE of this wonderfully diverse community
even more up-close and personal. I was honored to work the 57
Car in Sierra Vista and the 56 Car in Conway Homes for four years,
Community Relations for a year and then the Juvenile Division for
seven years, and also teaching a Delta College Police Science Course
both at Edison and Lincoln High Schools to over 1,200 students
many of whom are still in Stockton. Over the years I have met and
gotten to know so many PEOPLE with such interesting and diverse
backgrounds. I still see many of them today and we greet each other
with a smile and mostly talk about great memories and in a few
cases (from PD days) some sad ones. Daily I am meeting new folks
who add to my “Joy in Mudville!”
My time on the San Joaquin County Board of Supervisors took
me all over this great county and allowed me to see other areas of

“We also send our hockey team players out into the schools
to motivate these kids. Our players enjoy these visits and the
students quickly identify with their skills and accomplishments
and look up to them,” he says.
Stockton Makes The Cut
This type of community outreach was one of the attributes
that piqued Brad Rowbotham’s interest during his search for
prospective hockey teams. When the Stockton Thunder made his
short list, Rowbotham—general manager of Canada-based Roll’n
Oilfield Industries, Ltd., visited Stockton to meet the Thunder’s
staff and team in person. “I got a really good feeling about Dan,”
he says. “There’s a level of excitement he and his organization are
bringing to this team and this city that you seldom encounter in
the sports world.”
Rowbotham discovered other points of mutual attraction.
His father founded Roll’n Oilfield Industries, Ltd. 33 years ago,
and to this day supporting the community remains one of the
company’s core values. “I really like the programs that the
Thunder is doing throughout the Stockton school community. My
wife Dawn and I are very community oriented. She will be very
involved with the Stockton Thunder Foundation.”
Rowbotham cited the Thunder’s support of the Women’s
Center of San Joaquin County, and Thunder Goes Pink weekend –
the team’s popular fundraiser for breast cancer research.
A Long Way From Reed Deer
A native of Reed Deer, Alberta, Canada, Rowbotham freely

New Season, New Ownership Let the Thunder Roll
By Patricia Kutza
COVER STORY
When you hear the roar of the crowd at a typical Stockton
Thunder Professional Hockey game, you can understand how
fitting the name is. From the first drop of the puck to the end of
the third period, the rumble within the arena is nonstop. This
excitement is carried throughout the entire Thunder organization,
orchestrated by its president, Dan Chapman and new owner, Brad
Rowbotham.
Captivating The Community
In his sixth season of managing the Thunder, President Dan
Chapman is very pleased with how the team has evolved. Having
previously run the Stockton Ports baseball team, Chapman knows
how a great team can energize fans. He says that the Thunder’s
influence on this community is uniquely palpable, “the speed
and physical ability of these hockey players generates so much
excitement. They are captivating our community like nothing
before.”
Chapman also has nothing but praise for the Thunder staff.
“I’ve got 16 people in the front office who are doing a fantastic job
executing our business plan,” he says.
K-12 Outreach
Watch the audience at Stockton Thunder games and you’ll
see no greater enjoyment than on the faces of children who
love the sport of hockey. The Thunder offers four different
programs that reward students for school attendance, academic
achievement, reading skills, and accomplishments. “We wanted to
find ways to [incentivize] kids to not only stay in school but also
thrive in that environment,” says Chapman.
PORT CALL Greater Stockton Chamber of Commerce15
welcome change to the frigid Alberta winters. He says that
another deal clincher was the scope of Stockton’s downtown
revitalization. “The new marina, arena and open space grab
your eye.”
The level of support given by the business community
also impresses Rowbotham. He also gives high marks to the
Stockton Chamber, “They are terrific resources, not only for
buying advertising but also for participating in corporate
partnerships.”
A New Beginning
Friday, October 15 marks the official start of the 2010-11
hockey season. With this new beginning, there will be some
changes. “The assistant coach’s responsibilities will now be
dedicated 100 percent to coaching. Our ECHL affiliation with
the Edmonton Oilers, NHL affiliation with the San Jose Sharks
and AHL affiliation with the Springfield Falcons guarantees
bringing top quality talent and competition to the Stockton area,”
Rowbotham says.
Rowbotham is impressed by how upbeat the Stockton Thunder
fans are. “I try to form a positive point of view,” he says. “Going
to a hockey game gives people a good night out. Recently, I met a
father and his young daughter; I asked them if they knew about the
Stockton Thunder hockey team. Not only did they know about it,
they already had plans to go together to a game. Now how often do
you see dads and their daughters agreeing so easily?”

Greater Stockton Chamber of Commerce Receives
Statewide Award for Green Team San Joaquin
The Greater Stockton Chamber of Commerce was honored
with the prestigious Golden Arrow Award for Overall Excellence
in Product Stewardship by the California Product Stewardship
Council during the California Resource Recovery Association’s
(CRRA) 34th Annual Conference in Sacramento.
San Joaquin County Supervisor Leroy Ornellas presented the
Greater Stockton Chamber of Commerce with the 2010 Golden
Arrow Award for the Chamber’s Green Team San Joaquin project.
Green Team
San Joaquin is
an outstanding
example of
business
leaders playing
a defining
role in
fostering development of green business in their community
and helping them save money to improve profitability. This
collaborative effort brings together private businesses, City and
County government representatives, economic development
professionals, educators, students and community members to
develop and implement product stewardship and green business
practices that reduce waste and create jobs. In addition to being
leaders in product stewardship, the Greater Stockton Chamber of
Commerce and Green Team San Joaquin are fostering green jobs
in the Central Valley, such as Wine Bottle Renew in Stockton,
which is creating 25 jobs.
Product stewardship is a strategy to place a shared
responsibility for end-of-life product management on the
producers, and all entities involved in the product chain, instead
of the general public; while encouraging product design changes
that minimize a negative impact on human health and the
environment at every stage of the product’s lifecycle.
“CPSC created the Arrow awards to promote California
businesses that are reducing waste, saving money and creating
green jobs,” said CPSC executive director, Heidi Sanborn. The
inaugural awards program was funded by a grant from the
California Department of Resources Recycling and Recovery
(CalRecycle) to the Del Norte Solid Waste Management Authority.
Award winners and honorable mention recipients were
escorted down the “recycled red carpet” by panelists from the
Arrow Awards selection committee. The recycled red carpet,
which has been used for other award presentations, was donated
by Bentley Prince Street, a California carpet manufacturer.
For a complete list of honorees, please go to
www.calpsc.org/awards/winners.html or www.crra.com.

refers not only to the Thunder organization and players, but most
importantly about the PEOPLE from Stockton and from far and wide
