Anaerobic digester onlineAfter more than two years of hard work and dedication by port

commissioners and staff, the Port of Sunnyside’s 9.6 million gallon, $8.6 million anaerobic digester is up and running. The project, which was driven by active industry growth and the port’s commitment to their industry’s needs, is one of the largest construction projects to date.

The completion of this project provides Darigold the ability to expand operations in Sunnyside and will pave the way for expansion of present and future industries at the port.

The anaerobic digester pretreatment facility project has brought a new face and position to the port’s staff. Cory Wilson, a Bickleton native, was hired as plant operator of the wastewater facility this past September. Wilson’s background as an electrician and knowl-edge of variable frequency drive motors will be valuable in his new role at the port.

As always port projects impact our community, workers and fami-lies in a positive manner. The jobs created go a long way towards making our community a better place to live and raise a family.

staff, commissioners and DOE.With no future liability of

contaminants the port will be proceeding with their plan to demolish the present-day structure and market the site for new business development. One important part of the on-going project will be to preserve the historic water tower on the site which will give the property a

focal point. The next step is to secure

funding for the demolition. Port staff and commissioners are considering all possible funding sources for the next phase of this project.

DARIGOLD:Darigold is in the process of

a multi-million dollar expansion

project at its Sunnyside plant. The expansion is linked

in part to the recent Port of Sunnyside Anaerobic Digester Project which will double the discharge capacity of its wastewater units.

The Darigold processing facility is expected to add 25 new jobs and ensure the retention of the current 137 workers.

The Port of Sunnyside has seen remarkable expansion activity this past year.

SENECA:Seneca Foods expanded

their operations in Sunnyside with the completion of a 223,800 sq. ft. warehouse facility at 319 E. South Hill Road. This project nearly doubled the square footage of their Sunnyside facilities. The company finalized the purchase of Independent Foods in 2013 and is excited about their future with the port.

THE TALE OF TWO MILK PLANTS

CARNATION:The Port of Sunnyside

acquired Sunnyside’s landmark Carnation property from US Bank in December of 2012 with the intent of cleaning up and revitalizing the property for future development.

A large hurdle was cleared recently when the property was deemed free of contamination by the Department of Ecology (DOE) after nearly two years of hard work on the part of the port
