President’s Column

Gerade Aus!By Joe Carastro

I hope that everyone that is interested in going was able to register for the Parade - kudos to Jeanette Bassett for helping with at least one member’s challenge in getting recognized on the PCA website. A new event for the Parade this year is the Zone Challenge with representatives from the Zones, the National Offi ce, and Sponsors competing in a series of events. This should prove to be most interesting and will undoubtedly be the source of many stories told after the Parade.

Region-wise, all is well. The upcoming Malibu Run and Festival of Speed will have transpired by the time you read this, and I suspect both will have proven to be great successes. We have a lot of terrifi c events coming up – make that extra eff ort to get those members and potential members who have been meaning to show up to come on out and feel the love!

We are working hard on trying to get an Autocross event scheduled for this year – be on the lookout for large expanses of pavement that might be suitable for a site. Also, if you are interested in Autocross, please contact me as we are attempting to establish an Autocross committee to make event planning and execution a slightly less stressful experience.

Happy Spring to everyone, hope to see you soon.

Porschelly yours,Joe

A pleasant evening with friends has wound down, and now it’s time for the drive home. The 993 is waiting patiently in the driveway, eager to be back in the warm garage. Key in the ignition, twist… engine turns over but no VROOM-VROOM. Brow furrowed, try again but no luck.

The bad news is that we are 110 miles from home, and it’s 10 PM Sunday night. The good news is your host for dinner is a PCA member and other guests include SBR’s Alois and Estonia Ruf!

Preliminary diagnosis reveals the relay that controls the fuel pump and DME is a likely suspect. The cover is pried off of said relay and manually closing the switch controlling the fuel pump produces the desired VROOM-VROOM when the engine is turned over.

After ruling out the possibility of having one of the dinner guests ride in the trunk holding the relay closed, an alternate possibility is presented. A small plastic zip tie will hold the relay closed and get the car home! The trip home was uneventful, the relay removed on arrival (so the fuel pump would shut off ) and a new replacement plugged in the next day.

One more item for the emergency kit!

On a whim, immediately following the Breakfast Club in Santa Barbara, I decided to take a bit of a detour on the way home. Since it was very cold, and rainy, I fi gured there was a pretty good chance of seeing snow fl urries at the top of the San Marcos Pass (Hwy 154)

Editor’s Column

Yes, it snows in Santa BarbaraPhotos and Words by Michael C. Harley

– a delight for my 7-year-old son. My prediction was correct, but the “fl urries” were nothing short of a near blizzard! I found myself in my Porsche (on summer tires with no windshield defroster) following 4x4 SUVs in a couple inches of slush on a windy mountain road. It took mere seconds to realize I wanted off that mountain quickly (though, I must admit, my son really enjoyed the snow).

Four days later, I found myself on that same road in a rented Ford Taurus while on a business trip. With temps in the mid-60’s, snow was but a memory. However, I ran into a caravan of Porsches enjoying the scenery – it was the R.U.F. Committee returning from their luncheon (see page 10)! I have to confess I was rather jealous as my rental car wasn’t nearly as fun as the beautiful Porsches on that road.

Bud’s Run (see page 18) was very memorable. It was very nice to see our Porsche community coming together to enjoy their cars as a tribute to a member. The weather was just about perfect (especially for the air-cooled cars), and the road traffi c was light. Thanks to Rusnak Porsche in Westlake for catering a free brunch for everyone involved. Opening your dealership parking lot for our club on a Saturday is generous – adding great food, and a friendly atmosphere, was unforgettable – a very nice tribute to Bud.

One more special thanks to the Santa Barbara Auto Group, and Walt Branscome, for hosting our March Board meeting at their facility (see page 7). Thanks for the wonderful hospitality, and excellent BBQ, at your state-of-the-art dealership.

questionnaires to our advertisers regarding alternate methods of advertising in the Der Auspuff and sponsorship of various events.

Rally:Barry reports that all is going as planned.

Goodie Store: Mike Hodson reports business as usual. We are experiencing $500-$600 in sales each month.

Autocross:Bob Holzinger and Mike Hodson met with offi cials from the Camarillo Airport to get approval for use of the site. Approval was given and the tentative date will be Sunday, October 15, 2006.

Concours:Joe reported that he is still looking for interested persons to help with the concours.

Activities: Barry and Val reported that the Palms event went well. The Progressive Dinner is planned for May and all is going well. Barry suggested that a Staff Photographer position should be contemplated. Further discussion revealed that photos of events don’t seem to be an issue. Photos of new members at the Camarillo breakfast do pose a challenge at times.

Meetings & Events:Gary was not present.

Archivist:All is well, reports Joe.

President’s ReportJoe reports that for “Region of the Year” we no longer need to submit a scrap book. Joe reminded all present that articles may be submitted to the Panorama for the “from the regions” in the Panorama. Currently, Nick

Liakas has and continues to submit articles.

Old Business:Mike Hodson inquired about our website. Joe will call Bryce to make sure the old website is deleted and the new website updated.

Mike Harley handed out two versions of our new letterhead. A move was made to print the abbreviated version of the letterhead, seconded and approved.

New Business:Because of increased operating costs, Joe Carastro suggested increasing our activity fees from $5 to $10 per car, per activity. A motion was made, seconded and approved to raise the activity fee from $5 to $10 beginning July 1, 2006.

Jeanette reminded one and all to go on-line on March 10th and register for the Portland Parade.

The April board meeting is to be held at the Old Vienna Restaurant. Contact person will be James Oldham. The May board meeting will be at Enrique’s Mexican Restaurant and Jeanette will be the contact person.

Meeting adjourned at 9pm.

Secretary:Karen read the minutes of the February meeting. Minutes were approved as read.

Treasurer:George passed out the treasurer’s report. It was noted that $1,050 given to George by Lynn Kuchera for advertising at the last board meeting was not refl ected in the report. George has not received the latest statement from the bank and assured all that the money had been deposited. Mike Hodson made a motion to donate $1,000 from the proceeds of the 2005 activities fees to the American Cancer Society. Mike Harley seconded the motion; a vote was taken and so passed.

Membership:Jeanette announced that our current count is 632 members. We had 4 new members mail in applications. Jeanette made note that if a member does not renew by the expiration of their national membership, they are immediately dropped. It may take a couple of months to refl ect a renewal once it is sent in.

Editor:Mike Harley announced that the March issue is completed and at the printer. All Board Members received a PDF fi le of the Der Auspuff for approval. This practice of e-mailing an advance copy will continue. Mike believes that the printing costs should drop by $400 this month due to the elimination of some center color pages. Mike suggested off ering space for the local dealers to feature their products, sales team, etc. to continue to foster good relations for continued support. The next meeting to discuss avenues of support for the Auspuff will be on March 14th at Gary Gasperino’s house.

Advertising:Lynn reported that all advertisers have paid 100% in full. Lynn has created a list of potential advertisers. Lynn is circulating

8 APRIL 2006 PORSCHE CLUB OF AMERICA SANTA BARBARA REGION

Joe also told us that his plea for help at

the airport gate, last month, was amply

responded to by our membership. As he

said, he took out the old slide rule (the one

he used to in dental school “BC” - before

computers and calculators) and fi gured that

if everyone in the club only took one ten-

minute turn at manning the gate each year, it

would be enough to cover us for all of 2006.

A number of members did answer the call.

Anyone else who is willing to help out with

the airport gate, please see any of the Board

members to make your volunteerism known.

This is your club. It takes a little from all of us

(or, in many cases, unfortunately a lot from

just a few of us) to make anything happen.

The best way to really enjoy this club and

all that it off ers is to volunteer a little time

and get to meet many of the members you

ordinarily wouldn’t have the opportunity to

socialize with.

Goodie store manager, Mike Hodson,

then took the dais and talked about the

merchandise he had on hand. Once again,

he off ered us, at a substantial discount,

the remaining few 2006 PCA/SBR Porsche

calendars. If you could use one, pick one

up from Mike. It’s an extremely high quality

calendar featuring the cars owned by our

members.

Mike Harley, our Der Auspuff Editor, then

got up and asked if any of our members has

a Porsche they would enjoy seeing featured

on the front cover of our monthly newsletter.

Contact Mike if you would like your Porsche

to have its “15 minutes of fame.”

Regarding our upcoming events and

activities I had a few announcements

to make. Once again I emphasized the

importance of signing up early for events

you wish to attend. We had over a hundred

members register for the Palms Restaurant

run last month in February, even though we

could only take 70 into the restaurant with

us. Had we not had the miserable stormy

weather that day, many would have had to

fi nd their own places to eat after the drive

through the back roads of Ventura and Santa

Barbara counties. As it was, the winter storm

kept enough people from the ride that we

were able to accommodate the 60+ who did

make the event.

Living in southern California, we can

never count on BAD weather to keep the

participation down to a manageable level.

With the kind of participation we have been

getting on our events, it is often diffi cult to

fi nd restaurants, hotels, and other venues

that can accommodate all the people who

want to participate. The only way to ensure

you will make the event of your choice is to

sign up early as we do most everything on a

fi rst come, fi rst served basis. Do your best to

ensure that you are on the top of the list.

Speaking of that, one of the most popular

activities of the year, the Progressive Dinner,

is coming up. The registration form can be

found on page 26. We will visit a number of

PCA/SBR club members’ homes to socialize

and enjoy the various courses of the meal.

Due to the large turnout, the sit down

entrée is served at a restaurant that can

accommodate us. This year we will be signing

up 65 for this event. If you wish to attend, get

your reservation and sign-up fees in early.

This is certain to sell out in no time at all - just

as it did last year.

Beginning in July of this year, the Board

has decided to increase the participation fee

in our drives from $5.00 per car to $10.00 per

car. It’s been a lot of years since this fee was

raised. We now fi nd that with the growth of

our club, and the inherent expenses that

ensue, this additional money will help,

somewhat, in trying to keep our balance

sheet in balance.

Martin Jansen took the microphone next

to talk about the Bud Ewbank Memorial Run

to take place right after our breakfast. This

was to honor Past President Bud Ewbank

who passed away at the beginning of this

year. Martin planned a wonderful 50 mile

tour through the Santa Monica Mountains,

driving by and to various places that both

Bud and Carolyn loved. It ended up at Rusnak

Porsche, in Thousand Oaks, for a delightful

omelet bar, set up by the dealership, in Bud’s

honor. Almost half of those who attended the

breakfast went on this run…approximately

60 participants in 40 cars.

There’s always something fun happening

in our club. So don’t miss the events,

activities, and monthly breakfasts. Take

part in the tours and enjoy your PCA/SBR

membership to the fullest!

March 4 - 134 people in 82 Porsches met

at the Camarillo Airport for the PCA/SBR

monthly breakfast club. The weather was

crisp, clear, and sunny – a welcome change

from the winter rains we’ve been having.

Derek Carson, a prospective member

from Camarillo joined us in his 1978 930.

Happy to have you join us, Derek. We’re

looking forward to seeing you participate in

our upcoming events.

Long time member, Dick Douglas (from

Paso Robles), drove the one-hundred

seventy-fi ve miles south to have breakfast

with us and participate in the Bud Ewbank

Memorial Run later in the day (more on that

later). Dick has a 1965 356. We were happy to

see you Dick.

PCA/SBR President, Joe Carastro welcomed

everyone to the breakfast and reminded us

to be on the lookout for the Porsche Portland

parade registration information and form on

the Internet this month. Those who want to

go should sign up early – “immediately” is a

better word, as there is a limit as to how many

can attend this annual national event. Each

year, PCA members from around the country

are not able to get the hotels they want, or

miss out on the tours or events they choose,

as more sign up than can be accommodated.

The only solution is to get your sign-up in

early and then hope for the best.

While speaking about the Parade

registration, Joe further reminded us that the

Zone 8 rally to the parade, being organized

by members of our club, is proceeding

nicely. More information will be given later

as the arrangements are secured for the

stops and hotels along the route. The rally

to the Parade will be open to all Zone 8 PCA

members. So once again, if you want to be

part of this group driving event to Portland,

please sign up early as a limited number of

cars will be able to participate.

Camarillo Breakfast Meeting

PCA/SBR President Joe Carastro fi nished

his meal, stood up and welcomed everyone to

the breakfast. Joe reminded us to remember

to include our cell phone numbers when

we sign up for the various activities. This

will ensure that if we need to get any last

minute information to our club members,

we will have the means to do so. Joe also

noted that with the large number of sign-

ups we are getting on our events, we often

generate large waiting lists of those who

want to participate but got their names in a

little late. He asked that if anyone who had

signed up is planning on not making a drive,

to cancel with the activity coordinators so

that they can then move the next person on

the list into their place.

We would love to accommodate everyone.

However, many places we visit such as hotels

and restaurants are often not large enough

to accommodate all who want to join the

group. Therefore, everything is done on a

fi rst come, fi rst served basis. In most cases we

can take all who want to go for the drive, but

sometimes, once we reach our destination,

they may have to go to an alternate venue,

for example, to eat.

Speaking of this, sign-ups are now active

regarding the Porsche Parade in Portland. If

you are interested in going, check out the

PCA website and sign up for the activities,

banquets, etc… you’d like to be part of.

Again, there is a limit as to how many they

can accept on many of the activities.

While speaking about the Parade

registration, Joe again reminded us that the

Zone 8 rally to the parade is being planned

with overnight stops at a few hotels. The

cutoff point will be about 70 participants.

Joe also asked for more donations in

memory of our Past President, Bud Ewbank.

He said we were over halfway to our initial

goal of a contribution to the American Heart

Association in Bud’s honor.

Goodie Store manager, Mike Hodson,

then took the dais and talked about the

merchandise he had on hand. You know,

he does a wonderful job securing items for

us at really good prices. You can’t go wrong

picking up merchandise that Mike secures

for us.

Bryce Boe, our Webmaster, told us about

the plans he has to upgrade our new website.

Over the next few months we will see lots of

additions to the website he is developing.

Presently, if anyone goes to the old website

you will be redirected to the new one. We’re

anxious to see it in all its glory.

Mike Harley, our Der Auspuff Editor,

reminded us that if any of our members have

a Porsche they would enjoy seeing featured

on the front cover of our monthly

newsletter to contact him.

With breakfast over, it was back

home, once again, through patches

of showers. Hopefully, the rains

will abate for the rest of the month,

and allow us to drive under the clear

Southern California skies we are used to.

March 11, 2006 - Val and I left our home,

in Thousand Oaks, at 7:30 AM for the SBR

Santa Barbara breakfast at Stearn’s Wharf.

We drove through a strong winter storm all

the way north. In fact, the rain barely eased

at all until we got off the freeway in Santa

Barbara.

Nevertheless, 39 people in 15 Porsches,

and a number in their alternate vehicles,

joined us for breakfast. Well, this became

another nice turnout, considering that

many of us try to avoid driving around the

raindrops, especially when they are as heavy

and numerous as they were that day.

A number of our members brought guests

with them. Bryce Boe, our Webmaster, had his

girlfriend Monica on his arm. Dan Byers came

to the breakfast with his daughter, Devon.

Mike Harley, the Der Auspuff Editor, brought

his son Patrick with him. Nick and Olga

Liakas came with their daughters, Paula and

Stacey, and their beautiful grandchildren!

Paula brought her daughter, Caitlyn. Stacey

was accompanied by her son “Little Nick.” I

was told their husbands had a golf game and

couldn’t make the Harbor Restaurant. If us

“die-hard” Porsche owners can drive in the

rain, I suppose it’s okay for golfers to play

in the rain. In any case, it was

our pleasure to have so many

generations enjoy the meal

with us at this family aff air.

What a great “hobby” to have,

particularly when there are so

many activities to share with

our families and friends

for the evening. Other historical aspects of the location were wonderfully explained by Donna Small and Bob Gerity, the two docents.

Upon leaving the adobe, we embarked upon a two-mile hike into the canyon that provided majestic views of the surrounding countryside and the crystal clear Pacifi c Ocean. All of the Channel Islands were clearly visible on this picture-perfect day. (Lots of vultures circled overhead, leading Andy Gault to voice concern that they were after his sandwiches.)

At about one half dozen spots on the trail, the creek that runs through the arroyo had to be crossed by walking on wooden planks placed there by the grounds keepers. All made the crossings without incident… until the very last eff ort where Jeanette Clemens had to dip one toe into the water to maintain her balance. No one noticed.

The group had reserved a picnic spot adjacent to the creek. Lunch boxes and coolers were opened and all sorts of delicacies appeared. Andy’s sandwiches were still in tact and he attacked his meal with gusto. It was Larry Stoops who stole the show (so to speak) when he presented his dessert – chocolate Easter eggs by Bradburry. He delighted in licking the oozing soft center and melting the chocolate covering to melt in his mouth.

After lunch, it was time to return home. Part of the group opted to head north to Nojoqui Falls State Park and into Solvang, then connecting with Highway 154 to Santa Barbara. The rest took the 101 straightaway.

In addition to Andy, Jeanette and Larry, those attending were Bruce Clemens, Konnie Gault, Judy and Will Hoag, Suzanne Stoops, Chester and Joan Yabitsu, Bob and Shirley Yount, and yours truly.

The R.U.F. group’s next adventure will be on Friday, April 7, and will include lunch at The Rock Store on Mullholland Highway in Agoura Hills. Join us and have some mid-week fun! Contact Nick Liakas at 818/999-1600 x203, 818/706-6016 or [email protected]

March 15, 2006 - On a glorious Southern California day, 15 members of our region’s R.U.F. (Retired and Unemployed Folks) Committee explored Santa Barbara Land Trust’s Arroyo Hondo. Located 23 miles northwest of downtown Santa Barbara, this historic and gorgeous location off ered its guests spectacular vistas, gentle hiking, stream fording, and a picnic lunch that was a gastronomical delight.

Entry to the grounds is via a private driveway that can easily be missed if you are not paying attention to the numbers underneath CalTrans emergency phones on the shoulders of Highway 101. None of our intrepid drivers had any diffi culty fi nding the turnoff , but the gates at the top of the drive were locked. Two docents greeted the group, but the gatekeeper was nowhere to be found. Alas, he showed up 15 minutes late and access commenced.

At the foot of the steep driveway lay the adobe that has served as a home, a stagecoach depot and a ranch house. We were informed by the docents that this location is almost equal distance from Santa Ines Mission to Santa Barbara Mission, and southbound and northbound coaches would meet there to switch drivers so they would return home

Is rallying something you’d always thought you’d like to try? Did you know that a rally is a punctuality contest run on paved public roads? It is not a race. A team composed of a driver and a navigator are required for each entry. In 2006, the Santa Barbara Region will host such an event on April 29. One week before that (Saturday, April 22) we will off er a rally school. The format will be: a 2 hour classroom session followed by a short (45 minute) practice rally. Rallying skills, like many endeavors, improve with practice. The class will be held at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church at 4575 Auhay Drive in Santa Barbara. Directions will be provided to those who indicate an interest. You must pre-register. A copy of the Z8 Rally Rules will be provided before the event to those who pre-register for study. The class will be limited to the fi rst fi fteen cars that sign up. Pre-registration deadline: April 15th (that should be easy to remember?)

To pre-register or for additional information, please call Joe Boucher at 805-931-0990.

As an enthusiast, I loathe auto manufacturers who off er topless versions of their popular vehicles as afterthoughts – without the requisite engineering. I wince when the convertible model adds 300 pounds to the curb weight. I cringe when the roofl ess chassis fl exes like a noodle over uneven pavement. And, it just sickens me when the convertible version loses safety features because the manufacturer simply drops them.

Porsche, on the other hand, has done the convertible right.

Our featured Porsche this month is the most recent addition to the “911 family” known internally as the Type 997. This beauty, owned by our own Santa Barbara Region member Nicolas Liakas, was in the new-car showroom less than a year ago being sold as a “2005 Porsche 911 Carrera S Cabriolet” – a soft-top version of the more powerful normally-aspirated coupe.

The top is cloth. Though at fi rst many question the logic, Porsche’s decision to choose a soft top over a folding hardtop (like those found on the Mercedes SL and Cadillac XLR) was brilliant. The powered magnesium and aluminum frame is covered with a lined cloth roof. Insulated for noise (and temperature), the top and mechanism weighs but 93 pounds – about half of what a metal roof would weigh.

The light top helps retain the low center of gravity. As a result, handling and stability are at near-coupe levels. Furthermore, the top

retains the sleek shape of the coupe helping to keep the aerodynamics drag low. Amazingly, the drag coeffi cient is only .29 (lower than most hard-top vehicles!).

The attention to engineering detail continues. Since the fabric roof on the Cabriolet’s does produce a bit more lift than the roof on the Coupe (diff erent surface texture of the fabric and slightly diff erent profi le), Porsche has increased the deployed height of the automatic rear spoiler by another .8 inch to minimize lift on both axles. Just like the coupe, the device extends automatically at 75 mph; the spoiler drops back down below 50 mph.

More impressively, it is nice to note safety hasn’t been overlooked. From Porsche Side Impact Protection (POSIP) airbags that infl ate from the base of the windows, to thorax airbags on the outside of each front seat, and seat belt pretensioners (they pull the belt tight during an accident) you are in good hands. If you every fi nd yourself heading wheels up, take comfort in the reinforced A-pillars and automatically deploying safety bars (roll bars) hidden behind the rear seats. Porsche has you covered.

Top up, the Cabriolet is impressively quiet for a convertible – wind and traffi c noise is muted. Retracting the roof is completely automatic and it takes a mere 20 seconds. So you don’t get stuck “midstream” at a traffi c light,

Porsche has programmed the top mechanism to operate at speeds of up to 30 mph (though I wonder what would happen if you accelerated past 30 mph with the top going up – does it become an expensive parachute?).

With a base price of $91,400 the Carrera S Cabriolet isn’t inexpensive. Add the obligatory factory options (such as the beautiful “19-inch Carrera Classic Wheels” found on Nick’s car) and the price will break six fi gures.

In that rarifi ed price category, the Cabriolet competes against the Mercedes SL500, Maserati GranSport Spyder, and Cadillac XLR – among others. All are heavy hitters performance-wise, but the Porsche is quicker and faster than all. (Note: Only Porsche and Maserati off er a 6-speed manual transmission – the transmission of choice on Nick’s car.) Packing 355 hp (SAE) at 6600 rpm, and 295 lb-ft of torque, the 3.8-liter water-cooled fl at-6 reduces 0-60 times to merely 4.7 seconds. The top speed is a hair messing 182 mph (um…top up, I assume).

As the ultimate touring sports car from Porsche, the 997 Carrera S Cabriolet combines power, handling, safety, and comfort in one package. Painstakingly engineered, it operates as fl awlessly as an expensive chronometer.

Obviously Chris and I could do nothing other than provide sympathy and moral support. We left a

couple of recent “Der Auspuff ” magazines to help pass the

time, and away we went.Upon arrival at the airport, we parked

with the other 30 or so Porsches, including current Santa Barbara Region member and

former OCR member, all around nice guy Andy Gault. Andy introduced us to a few of his friends, suitable comments were exchanged, and away we went to check out the fl ying contraptions.

Continuing the “It’s a Small World” theme (go ahead, you know the tune), Burt and Marge Misevic were also there from the Santa Barbara Region, helping to recruit interesting aircraft for the upcoming Camarillo Air Show in August.

As luck would have it, upon returning to our car a couple hours later, a gentleman approached me to inquire as to who organized the event. Soon I learned that the gentleman owns a GT3, Minerva Blue with Saddle interior, just like my car! I had seen it in a museum some time ago, and thought I would never be so lucky again. We hope to see the GT3 at an upcoming breakfast, as the owner lives in Ventura County.

Signs of Spring are springing up all over, fragrant blossom smells are everywhere, my favorite time of year is upon us.

Keep those special orders coming. We love to provide people with garments as individual as their cars.

We look forward to seeing you all at an upcoming event, and thank you all for your participation.

Regards, Mike and Pamuela

W o w ! Major fun at the PCA Festival of Speed! Tons of great cars, fabulous people, and bargains galore! Having attended last year, we planned ahead and were able to take advantage of some terrifi c buys that will be shared with our members. Stop by next time you see us and ask “What’s New?” You’ll be pleasantly surprised.

Chris and I had a pleasant surprise last month during our regular visit to the Santa Paula Airport. The fi rst Sunday of every month is designated aircraft display day. Owners of antique, experimental, rare, and just plain gorgeous aircraft open their hangar doors to the public. Anyone, and everyone, is welcome to view, drool, ask questions, and generally be impressed at the attention lavished on these beautiful machines. Sound familiar?

The usual route to the airport includes a brisk drive up Bradley Road in Somis, sight of the recent Tour of California bicycle race. Turning onto Bradley Road we saw a 1982 Porsche 911SC parked along the side of the road, rear decklid open, with two gentlemen standing in the area.

Of course we pulled over to inquire as to their trouble. They opined that the fuel pump had gone “tango uniform” (totally unserviceable) and that a tow truck was on the way.

Naturally a brief conversation soon developed into an instant friendship, whereby we learned that the Orange County Region (OCR) of PCA had planned an event to visit the Santa Paula Airport on that day. These two fi ne gentlemen, a father and son, had been traveling with the group when the fuel pump failed. Nothing to do but call the fl atbed as the rest of the group continued up the road to the destination.

Bud’s Memorial Run

Remembering a close friendBy Mike Turek

18 APRIL 2006 PORSCHE CLUB OF AMERICA SANTA BARBARA REGION

Although the weather had been bleak for days prior, Mother Nature cooperated for Bud’s Memorial Run following the March Camarillo breakfast meeting – it was a gorgeous day to be driving a Porsche in honor of Bud Ewbank.

As we gathered at the breakfast, a generous collection was taken up to donate to the American Heart Association, in honor of Bud. Once waivers were signed, we were off …

Within minutes, the huge caravan of Porsches splashed color on the hillsides, dark green from the recent rain, as they carved through

Peter Kokiousis and Carolyn Eubank with Martin and Ankie Jansen Lunch generously catered by Rusnak Porsche in Westlake Village

the canyons above Malibu in search of many of Bud’s favorite spots: Mulholland Highway. The Rock House. Paramount Ranch.

As a tribute, the caravan toured past Bud and Carolyn’s home, rounding the cul-de-sac and fi lling the neighborhood with the sounds and smells of Porsche. It was very memorable, and touching, as members saluted during their drive-by .

Special thanks to Rusnak Porsche in Westlake for hosting everyone to a beautiful (and delicious) catered brunch at their dealership.

PORSCHE CLUB OF AMERICA SANTA BARBARA REGION APRIL 2006 23

Not even a winter storm could keep sixty bold PCAers from braving the back roads of Ventura and Santa Barbara Counties for a dash to the Palms Restaurant in Carpenteria! Thirty-two cars took the proverbial “green fl ag” and it can be reported that all made it safely without pranging the sheet metal.

Fears of another cloudburst were allayed by our brave leader Barry Weinstein’s clever strategy of not washing his car. As everyone knows, the surest ways to end a drought and bring on a deluge are to wash your car or plan a picnic. The dirt on Barry’s and a few others’ machines successfully warded off the raindrops. Though it rained the morning before the start, and again while we happily dined, the drive was dry and for the most part sunny.

Our hardy band met up at the Mission Oaks McDonalds for the seventy-mile jaunt along some of the fi nest driving roads in the region. Dividing into fi ve groups, the PCAers stormed onto Santa Rosa Road bound for Moorpark. After maneuvering through Moorpark, we turned onto HWY 23 and began the assault on Grimes Canyon. This snake of a road is a sweet mixture of tight turns and short straights that can bring out the best of a driver’s skill and courage. As we were northbound, we had the added “pleasure” of being on the outside lane, with drop-off s into the canyon only a few feet away. Fortunately for the faint of heart, and those occupying passenger seats, slower local

traffi c mixed in the procession kept things from getting too hairy.

From the twisties, we spilled out onto South Mountain Road bound for Santa Paula. On South Mountain, the straights are longer and the turns more open. Local traffi c also dropped off , so this became the quickest leg of the journey. A few folks were able to pin their ears back a bit here. This took us into Santa Paula and onto HWY 150 to Ojai, also known as “the Loop.”

Normally this is a quite satisfactory drive with beautiful scenery and plenty of wonderful curves that off er great driving pleasure at reasonable speed. However, CalTrans was apparently staging a simulation of urban rush hour. In several spots, road work had reduced the 150 to single-lane, controlled by traffi c signals. Thus we found ourselves in a repeating pattern of stop-and-go. This went on almost until the Dennison Grade. From the grade, however, we cruised unfettered into and through Ojai, before continuing on the 150 around Lake Casitas.

This leg of the journey restored what had been missed between Santa Paula and Ojai. No roadwork and less local traffi c allowed for some of the nicest pure driving of the day. Alongside the road were numerous signs announcing the “AMGEN Tour of California”. Unfortunately, this event was a week away, and apparently involves bicycles not Porsches. Too bad. As it was, Mike Hodson was almost

ready to swap his Turbo for a Cannondale, or was it a Schwinn?

From Hwy 150, MOST of us proceeded onto Hwy 192 toward Carpenteria. A few, led by....wait for it....yes, our fearless leader and route planner Barry himself, blew past the turn and ended up back on the 101! The rest enjoyed the pleasures of the 192 twisties before pouring into Carpenteria, where all arrived safely at the Palms Restaurant.

After an hour of cocktail chitchat, bench racing, and local sightseeing, all gathered for dinner at the Palms. This place is no ordinary steak house. At the Palms, you get the chance to be VERY familiar with your chef. In fact, you’re rather inseparable. From the back came slabs of raw meat, which each person had the pleasure of grilling to their own tastes. Accompanied by side dishes and wonderful conversation, the steaks were consumed as heartily as the roads had been only hours ago. And with dinner done, another great Porsche outing was complete and all headed home into the night, except perhaps Barry...we’re not certain where he ended up!

Thanks go out to Barry and Valerie Weinstein who did a tremendous job planning out the route, the restaurant, and the day. It’s because of them and the rest of the folks on the Activities Committee that the Porsche Life just keeps getting better!
