    Porbandar forms a part of the erstwhile Kathiawar peninsula

    located in the western part of Gujarat

    The district comprises of 3 talukas viz. Porbandar, Ranawav,and Kutiyana

    It is famous for the birthplace of Mahatma Gandhi the Father

    of the Nation

    Mineral-based Industries

    Over 90% of chalk is being produced in the district, which is the

    Economy and Industry Profile

    Porbandar is a base for Cement, Chemicals, Metallurgical, Ports & Ship building and Fishing industries

    Presence of large reserves of important minerals like limestone, chalk and bauxite in the district has

    given rise to several mineral-based and cement industries. Companies such as Saurashtra Cement Ltd.,

    Birla VXL Ltd., etc have set up their manufacturing facilities in Porbandar

    Presence of a port centre has offered a cutting edge to the district to catalyze the growth of industries,

    making it a terminal for export and import of goods

    Some of the major activities at this port include import of fertilizers, coal, LPG, export of oil cakes,

    cement, chemicals and raw cotton

    Fishing industry is a prominent activity in Porbandar with Silver Sea Foods emerging as one of the major

    sea food processing companies in the district

    Over 100 small scale industry (SSI) units are currently functioning in Porbandar with an investment to

    the tune of INR 10 Crore (USD 24.4 billion).

    69% of the States chalk reserve is found in Porbandar

    Porbandar contributes to over 90% of the total chalk production in Gujarat

    Major Industries

    A sizeable number of medium and large scale industries are present in sectors such as Chemicals,

    Engineering, Textiles and Port based activities, with an investment of INR 800 Crore (USD 195 million)

    The cement plant of Saurashtra Cement Limited is located in Ranawav and its chemical plant,

    Saurashtra Chemicals Ltd. which manufactures soda ash, calcined bauxite and bromine is located in

    Porbandar taluka

    Other key players include Cham, Gillnets (fishing nets), Cham Synthropes (PP ropes), Amar Polyfils,

    Polythelene Ropes, Saurashtra Fuels (low ash coke), Orient Abrasives (calcined bauxite), Amar Ice

    and Cold Storage (frozen fish), SHV Energy and LPG Infrastructure (co-terminal and storage of LPG),

    Hoddar Exports (frozen marine products), Silver Sea Food (fish and fishery products) etc.

    The district has 100 SSI units, engaged in fish processing,

    fishing nets, cold storage, cement based mosaic tiles, cement

    articles, emergy abrasives, bearings, and plastic articles.

    Ranawav and Porbandar are the major industrial centers, for

    SSIs having over 100 units with an investment of INR 1,044.4

    lakhs (USD 2.54 million)

    Sea food industry has witnessed maximum investments of INR

    75 lakhs (USD 0.18 million) followed by cement based

    industries

    Over 600 jobs were generated by industries engaged in seafood products, cement and machine tools

    Industry and Investment Trends (1988 97) According to Industrial Entrepreneurial Memoranda (IEM) filed during 1988 to 2007, Porbandar has

    witnessed an investment of INR 4,514 Crore (USD 1100.97 million) in industries, such as cement &

    gypsum industries, and infrastructure projects

    From 1988 to 1997, the investment in the district was around INR 1,206 Crore (USD 294 million)

    Cement and gypsum industries witnessed an investment of INR 979 Crore (USD 238.7 million), during

    the period 1988 97 which was almost 82% of the total investment of INR 1,206 Crore (USD 294.14

    million), generating as many as 3,130 jobs

    Industry and Investments Trends (1998 07)

    In the current decade (1998-07), there has been a sudden surge in investments in the infrastructure

    projects

    The sector witnessed an investment of an estimated INR 2,535 Crore (USD 618 million), which was

    higher by 75% of the total investments in the district

    Metallurgical industries, Textiles, Food and Agro based industries and Cement industry are the other

    major sectors that make a significant contribution to the economy of the district. These industries in total

    have generated over 1990 jobs in Porbandar over the last one decade.

    Investments in Pipeline

    A total of 9 MoUs were signed during Vibrant Gujarat Global Investors Summits (VGGIS) 2003,

    2005 and 2007 in several sectors such as Ports, Textiles, Oil and gas, Tourism and Mineral

    based Industries

    Five MoUs worth INR 6,210 Crore (USD 1,514 million) were signed during VGGIS 2007 in several

    sectors, such as, chemicals, textiles, oil and gas and infrastructure projects, generating over 5,000

    jobs

    With an investment of INR 5,000 Crore (USD 1,219 million), Seaway Maritime (I) Limited has

    signed an MoU during VGGIS 2007, for a seven star floating hotel and a golf course in Porbandar

    city

    During VGGIS 2007, Nirma Limited also signed an MoU for developing a 200 TPD caustic soda

    and a water purification plant. A Chemical plant is also proposed in the Porbandar city.

    Economy Drivers

    Porbandar is the emerging hub for Mineral-based industries, Cement industries, Food and agro

    industries, Port based activities and Tourism industry

    Favorable agricultural environment and climate has led to growth of food and agro industry in the

    district

    Emergence of several mining industries producing chalk, bella stone, lime stone, gypsum and salt

    pans along the coastal area and Barda Hill area have further fueled the growth of the district. This

    would also help in attracting investments in future

    Emergence of new sectors in the district, such as engineering, infrastructure projects, textile and

    metallurgical sector over last 20 years, has led to the development of Porbandar as a thriving industrial

    centre

    Being a seaport, the district has thrived on the port based industry, fishing industry

    Setting up of LNG terminal, power plant and the road projects are further expected to drive the

    economic and industrial growth of the district.

    National highway 8 B and 8E (Ext.) passes through

    the district, connecting Porbandar with Rajkot (187

    km) and Jamnagar ( 275 km)

    The district has a 106 km long maritime border facing the Arabian Sea

    with an all weather port at Porbandar.

    The port is well connected with other districts of Gujarat by means of

    road and rail.

    At this port, commodities like coal, date palm, LPG, butane, building

    materials, animal feed, steel, edible oil are imported.

    The exports include commodities like fish, cement, groundnut cakes,soyabean cakes, edible oil, bauxite, onion, garlic and building materials.

    M/s. Saurashtra Cement Ltd. has developed private jetty at Porbandar

    M/s. IMS Petrogas is also handling gas from Porbandar port

    Porbandar is linked with Rajkot, Surendranagar and Jamnagar by

    a 132 KV line

    A substation of 220 KV is in place in Ranawav town, connectedwith a 440 KV station in Jetpur in Rajkot

    66kv and 11kv distribution system spread over the district

    Proposed Infrastructure Projects

    Cement Industry project:

    The Mehta Mahendra Group has proposed a cement manufacturing

    plant in Ranavav, with an annual capacity of 1.10 MT at an

    estimated capital outlay of INR 300 Crore (USD 66.5 million)

    Road project:

    With an estimated cost of INR 735 Crore (USD 175 million), the

    Government of Gujarat has proposed a road project of over 300 km,

    linking the port with Rajkot. The Golden Quadrilateral Project

    originates from Porbandar to be ultimately connected with Silcher in

    Assam.

    Rail Project:

    To increase the accessibility to Porbandar port, a rail project

    connecting the port with Jamnagar is proposed by Indian Railways

    Porbandar has a literacy rate of 68.62% as per 2001

    Census

    There are 372 primary schools and 71 secondary and

    higher secondary schools in the district.

    One Government Polytechnic college in Porbandar is

    offering diploma courses in disciplines like electronics,

    mechanical and civil engineering with an intake capacity of

    420 persons

    The Industrial Training Institute in the district trains 272

    persons annually into industrial fields such as, electronics

    and computers and professions such as diesel mechanic,

    autoparts and motor vehicle mechanics etc.

    There are 10 primary health care centres (PHC), 3 community health care centres

    (CHC) and 1 civil hospital present in the district

    In addition, Porbandar has specialised hospitals to provide a comprehensive range of

    tertiary and secondary care.

    Backed by the state-of-the-art technology and trained clinicians, the orthopedics, eye

    treatment and child health care units are available in the district

    Porbandar has shown a growth of over 23% during 2006-07

    as compared to the inflow of tourists during 2005-06

    The district is very famous for Kirti Mandir (the birth place

    of Mahatma Gandhi), Bharat Mandir, Nehru Planetarium

    and Vijay Vilas

    Barda Hills Sanctuary is situated just 30 km away from

    Porbandar, having a diversified floral presence, with more

    than 650 flowering plants, medicinal plants and a high

    percentage of rare and endangered floral species. Wildlife

    species includes the rare and endangered species of

    Spotted and Crested Hawk Eagles

    Bhansara village has a cluster of seven Hindu temples

    dating as far back as 7th century

    Other renowned places in Porbandar are Madhavraiji Haveli

    Temple, Sudamapuri Temple,. Hazoor Court and sea
