In the late 1930s through the 1970s the Boston Pops under Arthur Fielder began playing and recording lightclassics and novelty numbers which fostered a universal popularity for symphonic gatherings called “Pops”concerts. (Erich Kunzel soon followed and took this format to its zenith with the Cincinnati Pops.) The shortpeppy standards, sometimes zany sounding pieces all had something in common — the fine composers /arrangers that wrote them. The lead “pops” writers of this era were Leroy Anderson, Richard Hayman andHenry Mancini.

The KSO taps into a treasure trove of these 3-4 minuteselections that have entertained American audiences in parks andon stages for nearly 80 years. Anderson’s “Waltzing Cat,” “Typewritter,”“Syncopated Clock” and “Bugler’s Holiday” allow the orchestrato musically animate everyday items with wit and charm.Hayman’s “Pops Hoe-Down” and arrangements of “Little BrownJug” and “When the Saints go Marching In” succeed in gettingeveryone’s toes tapping. Mancini’s film scores have allowed

snippets like “Moon River,” Theme to “The Pink Panther” and others to become beloved standards. So, packup the family for a old-fashioned “pops” concert on the lawn of the concert bowl at picturesque Devou Park inCovington.

Picnics are welcome, and KSO concessions has stocked up on snacks and soft drinks. Renegade Street Eatsand Street Pops will be on hand too. Join Music Director James Cassidy and the KSO for the Symphony’s20th Summer Series finale in Devou Park, Saturday, August 30th at 7:30 p.m.

The Western Ave. park entrance is closed to Devou Park (Look for KSO signage). Please seewww.kyso.org for easy alternate routes. The TANK Shuttle from Covington Catholic to the band shell runs from 6:00 -7:30 p.m. for $1 each way. Bring blankets or lawn chairs. Free admission and parking,Donations suggested.
