Mother Teresa

Prayers, Insights, and Wisdom of Soon-to-Be Saint Teresa of Calcutta. It was the summer of 1986 when 21-year-old Susan Conroy got on a plane by herself, going far from her family's home in Maine. Her

destination: Calcutta, India. Her reason: to serve the poorest of the poor with Mother Teresa and the Missionaries of Charity. While serving in Calcutta, Susan developed a personal friendship with Mother Teresa that lasted for the next 11 years, until Mother Teresa was called home to God in 1997. Side-by-side with the great future saint, Susan learned Mother Teresa's insights on suffering, joy, peace, humility, and poverty. She entered into Mother Teresa's heart in her everyday life. She received Mother Teresa's blessing and approval to share the saint's words and prayers with others so "to bring them peace and joy, too." Susan gathered these gems of spiritual wisdom of the saint into a book published by Marian Press and released on the date of Mother Teresa's canonization this Sept. 4. Praying with Mother Teresa: Prayers, Insights, and Wisdom of Saint Teresa of Calcutta gives a meditative look into the heart and soul of Mother Teresa. QUOTES OF MOTHER TERESA OF CALCUTTA “Keep the joy of loving God in your heart and share this joy with all you meet especially your family. Be holy – let us pray.”

“I once picked up a woman from a garbage dump and she was burning with fever; she was in her last days and her only lament was: ‘My son did this to me.’ I begged her: You must forgive your son. In a moment of madness, when he was not himself, he did a thing he regrets. Be a mother to him, forgive him. It took me a long time to make her say: ‘I forgive my son.’ Just before she died in my arms, she was able to say that with a real forgiveness. She was not concerned that she was dying. The breaking of the heart was that her son did not want her. This is something you and I can understand.”

“When once a chairman of a multinational company came to see me, to offer me a property in Bombay, he first asked: ‘Mother, how do you manage your budget?” I asked him who had sent him here. He replied: ‘I felt an urge inside me.’ I said: other people like you come to see me and say the same. It was clear God sent you, Mr. A, as He sends Mr. X, Mrs. Y, Miss Z, and they provide the material means we need for our work. The grace of God is what moved you. You are my budget. God sees to our needs, as Jesus promised. I accepted the property he gave and named it Asha Dan (Gift of Hope).

“Yesterday is gone. Tomorrow has not yet come. We have only today. Let us begin.”

“Like Jesus we belong to the world living not for ourselves but for others. The joy of the Lord is our strength.”

“There are so many religions and each one has its different ways of following God. I follow Christ: Jesus is my God, Jesus is my Spouse, Jesus is my Life, Jesus is my only Love, Jesus is my All in All; Jesus is my Everything.”

Join us in the Chapel to ask the grace to believe Jesus is our everything and while we are on earth to live not for ourselves but for others, to

receive the joy and strength of the Lord, at 3:00 PM THE HOUR OF GREAT MERCY on Fridays and Sundays.

10 Points on Good Stewardship for Students

The stewardship way of life is for everyone, even those who are young. As students go back to school as another summer has passed, it is a great time

to reflect on how a student is called to live out his or her stewardship. Here are 10 things to focus on as the academic year begins.

1. God has given you the gift of intellect and it should be used wisely. Do not try to just get by in your classes. Offer your best effort and cultivate your intellect so you can become the best student possible.

2. The work you do in class is your gift to God. At this time in your life, you are called to be a student. What you do in class is your unique offering to God.

3. Don’t waste the gift of time. For generations, students have put off studying or class projects until the last-minute. That is being a poor steward of one of God’s greatest gifts: time. Learn to manage this precious resource. 4. Always remember you are a part of a community, even if you don’t feel like it. Unless you are homeschooled, other students trying to make sense of growing up and the need for school surround you, and at that, even homeschoolers have communities that they see periodically. You are never alone in the jungle of school and there are peers, parents, and school staff that are willing to help you discern what is best for you. 5. Be grateful for the chance to be in school. Millions of children all around the globe have had the chance to attend school taken from them. Their futures are severely compromised because they are missing the chance to learn basic knowledge that will allow them to prosper in the world.

Never take your ability to attend school for granted. 6. God is calling you today in your classroom. Perhaps it is through a classmate, a teacher, or a circumstance, but somehow God is asking something of you each day. Be aware and stay mindful of all those who cross your path each day. Something or someone very important might cross your path, never to return again. 7. Hold yourself accountable. Don’t fall into the temptation of slacking off, not doing your work, or even worse, cheating. Integrity is a precious gift that should never be tossed away. No one else is responsible for your actions except for YOU. 8. Embrace the entirety of your life as a student. Growth in school is about more than books and subjects. God has filled this world with people to meet, sports to play, and moments to rejoice in life. Don’t let this time pass you by and get involved. 9. Begin and end each school day with prayer. When you awake, offer the day and all your efforts of the day to God, and then when the day is over, spend time with God reflecting on how you succeeded and how you failed as a good steward and disciple of Jesus. Allow God to walk with you throughout your day by creating bookends of prayer for your day. 10. Stay committed. The school year can be long. Make a commitment to stay focused and not fall behind. The good thing about the times we fail in that commitment is that we can recommit ourselves and begin again.

Have an awesome school year and always keep God as the main thing. Tracy Earl Welliver, MTS Liturgical Publications

“Stewarding our Gifts: Go in peace, glorifying the Lord by your life."

September 4, 2016 The Twenty-third Sunday in Ordinary Time Wis 9:13-18b; Phlm 9-10, 12-17; Lk 14:25-33

Our senses reveal the natural world to us, but often we have difficulty in seeing and understanding it. Our best hope at observing the glory of heaven is through the revelation of God. Jesus gives us clues in today's Gospel of how we can work on accomplishing our salvation. We must take up our own cross and follow after Him. We must contemplate the final goal and carefully determine the steps that will help us reach that goal. May our gifts of courage and fortitude enable us to carry our cross against the enemies of the kingdom.

Prayer of St. Thomas Aquinas

Grant us grace, O merciful God, to desire ardently all that is pleasing to you,

to examine it prudently, to acknowledge it truthfully

and to accomplish it perfectly, for the praise and glory of your name. Amen.
