We have some special guests that include not only our international guests Jukka Myllys and Øystein Baadsvik, but also the NABBA Honors champions, the Georgia Brass Band. Also, we have the inaugural IEI Festival Band. Thank you for being a part of this amazing week and also a personal thanks to our sponsors that make this week possible. Adam Frey - Artistic Director and Soloist

One of the elite brass soloists in the world, Adam Frey travels the globe sharing his virtuoso talent, sensitive lyricism, and connection with audiences. Whether Adam’s performing with orchestras, wind bands, brass bands, or in solo recitals, audi-ences love his charismatic personality and accessible musical interpretations, and critics rave over his technical prowess and championship of the euphonium.

A native of Atlanta, Georgia, Adam received his musical training at the University of Georgia and the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, England. As a major young ambassador of the euphonium, Adam has more than 60 works that have been composed or specifically arranged for him.

Adam has played with ensembles the world over, including the world famous Boston Pops, Cheju Symphony Orchestra in South Korea, the Vaasa Symphony Orchestra in Finland, and along with symphonies in Seattle, Oregon, Atlanta, Greensboro, and Charleston in the United States. He also performs regularly with wind bands and brass bands that have included Soli Brass in Holland, Point of Ayr in Wales, the National Youth Brass Band of Switzerland and wind bands from Singapore, Germany, Hong Kong, and the United States.

As a teacher, Adam has published articles and reviews internationally and served as an assistant edi-tor of the Euphonium Source Book. He serves as president of The Euphonium Foundation Inc., a non-profit established to promote the euphonium, and as Artistic Director of The International Euphoni-um Institute, North America’s largest camp dedicated specifically to the euphonium. Adam also serves as Adjunct Professor of Euphonium at Georgia State University and as an Artist Affiliate with Emory University.

Adam has an impressive collection of recordings that range from his first solo recording, Listen to THIS!!, with piano to Collected Dreams, an enchanting collection of traditional Scottish, Irish, and classical melodies with synthesizer to his partnership with Scott Hartmann, former trombonist with the Empire Brass Quintet, on Little Buckaroos. His pioneering two discs released with the New Zea-land Symphony Orchestra: Taking Flight and Majestic Journey are the first of their kind for eupho-nium and he also released a third recording in 2007 featuring new works for the euphonium entitle Beyond the Horizon. Three more recording projects are currently underway.

His website, www.euphonium.com, contains more information, sound files, performance schedules, photos from his world travels, and his publications.

Jukka Myllys, euphonium, has worked as assistant con-ductor of the Pohja Military Band and played trombone with the Oulu Symphony Orchestra. He graduated as a Master of Music from the Sibelius Academy, has per-formed as a soloist with several symphony orchestras and wind bands, recorded, and given solo recitals in Europe, Japan and the United States. Øystein Baadsvik - International Guest Øystein Baadsvik is the only tuba virtuoso to have carved out a career exclusively as a soloist, ra-ther than becoming a member of an orchestra or accepting a teaching post. His multi-faceted musi-cal career as a soloist, chamber musician, lecturer and recording artist has taken him all over the world. The unique virtuosity and musicality Mr. Baadsvik’s brings to the tuba has established him as the exemplar of the instrument.

He studied under the celebrated tuba player Harvey Phillips, Distinguished Professor emeritus, De-partment of Music, Indiana University and with the legendary Arnold Jacobs, who had a forty-year career and position of Principal Tuba with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Øystein Baadsvik’s international career began in 1991 when he was awarded two prizes at the prestigious Concours International d’Exécution Musicale in Geneva.

His international engagements include performances with orchestras such as the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra, Bergen Philharmonic, Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra, the Taipei National Symphony Orchestra, Singapore Philharmonic, and the Orchestra Victoria of Melbourne. Baadsvik has per-formed in some of the most famous venues in the world and 2006 made his New York recital debut at Carnegie Hall.

Baadsvik is an active recording artist whose CDs re-ceive unstinting praise. During the last two years he reached a major breakthrough in Japan, where his CDs ranked second in sales recordings for all wind instruments. In their review of “Tuba Works”, Ameri-can Record Guide said, “This spectacular recording establishes Baadsvik as one of the best solo tubists in the world.” In praise of “Tuba Carnival”, The Daily Telegraph, U.K said, “...his capacity for lyricism in a recording that emancipates the tuba from its Cinderel-la role with ear-catching panache. Baadsvik shows that anything a violin can do, a tuba can do too.” Øystein Baadsvik performs exclusively

on Miraphone Instruments.

The Georgia Brass Band

The Georgia Brass Band was founded in 1999 by a group of Atlanta-area brass players eager to explore the challenging repertoire for British-style brass band. The band performed its first concert after just a few months and has maintained an active schedule ever since. The mission of the band is twofold: the band allows talented area musicians the opportunity to hone their individual and collective skills through rehearsals and concerts, and the band introduces local concertgoers to this exciting genre of brass music. Band members are selected by audition or invitation and include some of the finest musicians in the area. All members and staff volunteer their time and talents to the band. The band members represent a variety of profes-sions, including lawyers, doctors, salespeople, freelance and military musicians, business owners, educators, students, computer professionals, a college vice president, a financial planner, and a pipe organ builder. The Georgia Brass Band has appeared on local television, as well as the Atlanta NPR affiliate. The band has performed at numerous concert halls, festivals, churches, and colleges throughout Georgia and beyond. The band has also appeared with a number of renowned brass soloists, including those at the IEI. In recent years the band has achieved national acclaim through its successes at the annual North American Brass Band Association Championships. In 2006 the band made its first appearance in the competition, earning the First Place trophy in the Challenge Section and garnering accolades and rave reviews from all present. In 2007 the band moved up to the highly competitive Honors Section and came in second place, missing a victory by a scant margin. In 2008, the band returned to the Honors Section and took home the coveted First Place tro-phy. The reviewer from 4barsrest.com, England’s leading brass band website, offered effusive praise of the band’s performance, stating “Georgia’s rendition of Journey Into Freedom was stunning. They produced a quite remarkable dark sound, whilst their technique was virtually flawless…a real class act.”
