Jordyn Seth William Avelar earned his angels wings and entered eternal life on Good Friday, April 3, 2015 in Oro Valley at 2:43 PM. His spirit is carried on by his wife Paige Avelar; son Ryder; parents, Pete and Tani Avelar of Mesa and, David and Lori Belliveau of Superior; sisters: Brytni (Shawn) Lindsay of Superior an Cori Lynne (Adam) Croy of Panama City Beach, Fla; brothers: Joshuah (Bonnie) Landspurg of Gilbert and Jacob Ewing of Mesa. His sister Alyssa paved his way to eternity in 2005. Jordyn was an extremely personable soul and was actual-ly known as “ The Mayor “ in his childhood neighborhood. He knew where everybody in the neighborhood lived and made friends with everybody in the neighborhood from age 80 to 8. No one was a stranger to Jordyn. His par-ents and siblings knew that his gift of gab would charm a snake and could easily sell ice to inhabitants at the North Pole. He would also give the shirt off of his back to help a stranger in need. As his final unselfish deed, Jordyn had his organs donated to Donor Network of Arizona. His Celebration of Life was held at Tumbleweed Park, 2250 S. McQueen Rd in Chandler, Az on April 19, at the McDowell Mountain Pavilion from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made online to www.gofundme.com/r4bwkk (Support for Paige and Ryder).

Pinal County reviews response to measles outbreakFLORENCE - In January, the Pinal County Public Health Services District (PCPHSD) found itself in the middle of a developing international story. Four members of a Kearny family following a December trip to Disneyland had contracted the measles virus. None of them had received their MMR vaccination. “Measles is one of the easiest diseases to spread,” Public Health Director Tom Schryer said. “I consider ourselves fortunate that it didn’t spread to more people that came in contact with that family.”

PCPHSD released a media statement on January 22, alerting the Town of Kearny that a family had contracted the disease. It became a race against the clock for the staff at PCPHSD to investigate every place the family visited and to contact every person who might have been near them when they were out in public. “Data became extremely important,” Assistant Director of Public Health for Operations Kore Redden recalled. “We had to find out those people who had come in contact with this family and determine their vaccination status because measles

is easily spread to those who are not vaccinated.” Because Measles is highly infectious, PCPHSD committed most of their staff to the investigation and response. Director Schryer said “We worked with schools, healthcare providers, the infected family and used the State immunization registry to determine who was at risk based on their contact with the family or lack of vaccination and then did all we could to immunize those who were susceptible.” One set of employees proved to be extremely invaluable to the investigative

process. School Health Liaisons are placed in many public schools throughout Pinal County. It’s a program that offers health education for students and help with any health-related issue the school sees as a need. “The School Health Liaisons were one of the keys to helping us out during this outbreak,” Schryer noted. These people are official county employees. They are trusted by school staff, students along with parents and that reaps huge benefits for us

Summer just isn’t summer for kids in Kearny without meeting up with their friends at the swimming pool for a day of fun in the sun. But this year, summer may be very different for Kearny residents who use the pool. With more than $220,000 in pool repairs needed, it may

Kearny pool in need of major repairsbe a while before the pool can be opened. Town Manager Anna Flores reported that the fiberglass in the pool needed to be replaced in order for the pool to remain safe and they also checked to make sure there were no other structural damages to the pool. Fortunately for the community there was no structural damage found at the pool but they did determine that the plumbing was in need of repairs and replacements. The cost to fix the fiberglass and plumbing is going to cost $220,000, and if the funds are raised in time the pool can be repaired and open in time for the summer swim season. The funds for these repairs are not available in the town budget; with decreasing revenues and other infrastructure costs it is not possible of the town to fund these repairs with their budget. To help fund the repairs the town received $8,000 from Resolution Copper and from ASARCO to help with some of the initial inspections. Engineers from Resolution Copper also helped with some of the initial inspections. The town has applied for three different grants to help fund the repairs but have not heard a response on those applications as of press time. The Kearny Rotary, the GKI and Misitas Enterprises have taken up the task of fundraising for the repairs, the trio has started a Go Fund Me account and will also host a steak dinner and dance with a live band on May 9, 2015. You can help get the pool reopened in time for this summer by donating online at: http://bit.ly/1J5Rvvs.

In March, the Hayden Town Council accepted the resignation of Chief Louie Tartaglia. Tartaglia had been with the department a little less than a year.

In a special meeting called by the council following his initial resignation, Vice Mayor Maria Munoz said, “He is resigning on his own and was not fired or chased off by the council.” The council meeting minutes reflected confirmation from Mayor Bobby

Smith that the council did not ask Chief Tartaglia to resign.Tartaglia left Hayden to pursue other law enforcement opportunities. With the absence of a chief of police, the Hayden council voted to have Gila County Sheriff’s Office provide an interim chief

until a new chief can be hired. GCSO Lieutenant Keith Thompson is now serving as the interim chief. Mayor Smith explained during the April council meeting that they would be interviewing chief candidates in the coming weeks.

After a 24 – 4 victory at San Carlos last Wednesday and an 8 – 5 win at San Manuel last Thursday, the Jr. Bearcats baseball team finished the regular season with a 6 – 2 record, good enough for the third seed in the upcoming playoffs that begin on Thursday, Apr. 23. The Jr. Cats jumped out to a 4 – 0 lead against the Braves thanks to first-inning doubles by Jaden Pace and Jayden Lagunas. Anthony Lopez followed, scoring

the fourth run of the inning on an inside-the-park homerun. Lopez cleared the bases in the second inning with a grand slam, his second homerun in as many innings. Lagunas, who was the winning pitcher, was followed in relief by Danny Garcia, who was making his first appearance of the season. Garcia didn’t disappoint, fanning four Braves’ hitters in only two innings of work. As stated previously, the playoffs will being on April 23 with the finals scheduled for April 25 at Eloy.

The RJH softball team looking to stay undefeated going into Saturday’s Championships in Eloy had one home game and two away games remaining on the schedule. The first team up was the Superior Panthers. The Panthers in the first inning were able to send five batters to the plate, but the Bearcat defense would not yield a run. The Bearcat offense was able to send 13 batters to the plate resulting in nine runs led by a Destiny Gonzales single and Julie Meza triple. The second inning for the Panthers was a 3-up, 3-down. The second attempt at batting the Bearcats sent 12 batters to the plate resulting in eight runs, led by a Julianna Hong single, Shelby Yocum double, and Julie Meza triple. The third inning for the Panthers introduced them to the Bearcat infield defense and catcher Tara Lorona’s arm as she picked off a Panther base runner, three batters no runs scored. The Bearcat offense sent 11 batters their turn at bat resulting in six more runs, led by a Tara Lorona single and a Daniella Hinojos single. The Panthers last at bat resulted in five batters at the plate. The third and fourth batter put a little spark in the offense resulting in two runs scored. The final score a 23-2 win for the Bearcats. Offensively the team was led by Julie Meza (2-2, 2 triples), Shelby Yocum (2-2, double), Tara Lorona (1-2), Daniella Hinojos (1-2), Destiny Gonzales (1-2), and Julianna Hong (1-3). On the mound Daniella Hinojos (2K, 4W, 0H) and Amee Kenyon relieving (0K, 1W, 0H) took the win. Game ball went to Julie Meza for her offense (2 triples). The second game the Bearcats traveled to Miner Country. Getting first at bat the Bearcats started right were they left off in the Superior game. Led by a Daniella Hinojos single and home run, Amee Kenyon double, Shelby Yocum home run, and sending 17 batters to the plate to score 12 runs for a quick start. The Miners first attempt batting was 3-up, 3-down. The second inning the Bearcat offense sent nine batters to the plate scoring five runs led by a Tara Lorona double, Daniella Hinojos double, and Julie Meza home run. The Miners were able to kick start their offense sending six batters to the plate resulting in two runs scored. The third inning the Bearcat offense began to slow down sending only four batters to the plate resulting in one single and one run being scored by Julianna Hong. The third at bat

for the Miners was a little exciting with the top of the Miner batting order up. The Miners were able to load the bases but a 4-4,4-3 double play by Destiny Gonzales strengthened the Bearcat defense resulting in no runs scored for the Miners. The fourth at bat the Bearcats sent 12 batters to the plate resulting in eight runs scored, led by singles by Julianna Hong, Amee Kenyon, Shelby Yocum, and Destiny Gonzales, a Daniella Hinojos triple, and home runs by Tara Lorona and Julie Meza. The Miners last at bat was their most productive of the game sending 12 batters to the plate resulting in six runs scored. The final score 26-8 in favor of the Bearcats. Offensively the Bearcats were led by Daniella Hinojos (4-4, double, triple, HR), Julianna Hong (3-3), Julie Meza (2-3, 2 HR), Tara Lorona (2-3, double, HR), Amee Kenyon (2-3, double), Shelby Yocum (2-4, HR), and Destiny Gonzales. On the mound Daniella Hinojos (3K, 1W, 0H) and Amee Kenyon relieving got the win. Game ball went to Daniella Hinojos for her offense (single, double, triple, and HR). The third game had the Bearcats traveling to Braves Country. Batting first the Bearcats sent 17 batters to the plate, scoring 12 runs led by a Tara Lorona double and triple, Shelby Yocum HR, Julie Meza triple, Danielle Barajas double, and singles by Julianna Hong and Daniella Hinojos. The Braves first at bat, seven batters were able to score 4 runs with 2 outs through fielding and throwing errors. A quick visit to the pitchers mound from Coach Hinojos to help shake off the rust from the bus ride and everything was back to normal. The second inning the Bearcats sent five batters to the box and scored three runs led by a Tara Lorona HR and Daniella Hinojos double. The second at bat for the Braves was a 3-up, 3-down. The third inning the Bearcats sent four batters to the plate with no runs scored. The same result for the Braves four batters no runs scored this inning. The fourth and final inning the Bearcats sent nine batters to the plate, scoring five runs led by a Julia Lorona HR, Danielle Barajas triple, Julie Meza double, and Daniella Hinojos single. The Braves final at bat, four batters led to no runs scored. The final score 20-4 in favor of the Bearcats. Tara Lorona (3-3, double, triple, HR), Daniella Hinojos (3-3, double), Julie Meza (2-2, double, triple), Danielle Barajas (2-2,

Congratulations to the RJH softball team in finishing the regular season undefeated, scoring 15.5 runs/game as a team and allowing 3.1 runs/game as a defense. This Saturday the RJH softball team will travel to Eloy as the number one seed for the Central League Championships.

The sixth-ranked Ray baseball team improved to 8 – 1 in sectional play after a 6 – 1 victory at San Carlos on April 10. The Bearcats are now in sole possession first place in Section VI. An automatic berth in the state tournament goes to each of the six section winners in Division IV.

Douglas McPeak went 3-for-4 with three RBI versus the Braves. Destry Yocum also had three hits while his younger brother, Cole, finished with two hits. Senior Jacob Pace earned the complete-game win, his first of the year. The right-hander allowed only one run on three hits while striking out 14 Braves’ hitters. Upcoming schedule: April 23 at Hayden, April 24 at Superior, and April 28 vs. San Manuel. All games are scheduled for 4 p.m.

The Ray softball team, the state’s best according to the most recent AIA rankings, won its eighth-straight game last week after defeating 13th-ranked Desert Christian last Tuesday. The Lady Cats last loss was on Mar. 28 versus Rincon University. Gabbi Montano, Stormee Galka, and Savannah Willis each had two hits versus the Eagles. Galka’s two hits included a double and a triple. Willis, a junior, also hit a triple in the win. Galka, a junior, allowed only one run on four hits,

striking out seven and walking two in the complete-game win, her 13th of the year. The Lady Cats, who are 10 – 0 in sectional play, will play three-straight ranked teams – all of them in their section – after a game on April 22 versus Gilbert Classical Academy. They’ll play No. 8 Hayden, No. 6 Superior, and No. 4 San Manuel in succession with a chance to clinch the sectional title and an automatic bid, and likely top-seed, in the state tournament. Upcoming schedule: April 22 vs. Gilbert Classical Academy, April 23 at Hayden, April 24 at Superior, and April 28 vs. San Manuel. All games are scheduled for 4 p.m.

Norm and Myra Warren were both born and raised in the Kearny-Ray area. They have lived here nearly all their lives and raised their family here. They have five children and 11 grandchildren. Both of their parents still live in town. Their roots, friends and family ties are deep in the community. Norm and Myra are the new owners of what was once Gordon’s IGA. Their store is now named Norm’s Hometown Grocery. They are proud of their hometown and the name reflects this. The Warrens took over the grocery on April 1. Yes, “April Fool’s Day,” they laughed. “It was always a dream that I would own my own store,” said Norm. Myra always wanted to own her own business so when Norm was asked if he was interested in buying Gordon’s IGA, they thought long and hard about it. We had known that Gordon’s was selling out. Rumor was they going to shutdown like they did in San Manuel but the truth was they were always going to sell it. Norm and Myra felt it was “better for someone with local interests and experience” to own the store. “Norm knows how to run the store well,” said Myra. Norm has 35 plus years working for Gordon’s IGA, 28 of those years as manager. He started as a carryout boy at age 16. He has worked every department except the meat department. Gordon’s always supported the community but lived in Tucson. The Warrens are part of the community and will continue to support it. “We are blessed to have this opportunity,” said Myra.

Norm’s Hometown Grocery keeps it local

Myra and Norm Warren are the new owners of the IGA grocery store in Kearny.

“We will definitely make some changes,” said Norm. “We have a lot of ideas but will take it slow. We want to try new products and revamp some departments.” Norm’s Hometown Grocery will remain members of the Independent Grower’s Alliance (IGA). If customers have a special request for a new product we will do our best to get it in the store and try it out. They will be lowering prices for several categories of products. Store hours are Monday through Saturday, 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Sundays, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. The Warrens said they will continue to run ads in the newspapers. They have a website where customers can look at weekly special coupons for free or greatly reduced items. The website is normsiga.com. They are also on Facebook. Norm’s Hometown Grocery wants the local people to know they are still here for them and really need their support. Norm and Myra said they want to thank their loyal customers in Kearny and those from the Hayden-Winkelman area that have supported the store over the years. New signs have been ordered and as soon as the Warrens are settled, a grand opening will be held. Look for the date for the grand opening of Norm’s Hometown Grocery on Facebook or in the paper.

I remind all Kearny residents of the financial survey being conducted in order for the

Town of Kearny to receive a $224,000 Community Development Block Grant. The survey will determine if Kearny fits the “Low/Moderate” income category which allows us to fund systemic items such as fire hydrants and the ten-year plan required by the State of Arizona. The surveys, which are totally confidential, may be acquired at the library and at Town Hall. You may fill them out on site or may take them home to complete and return (or mail in with the supplied stamped envelope). Wide participation is needed to make Kearny a better place. Please do your part by filling out the survey completely and getting it in. As you read this, I am in Japan with my wife, Carol, visiting our son, his wife, and our grandson. Japan has

some cases, even begun large landscaping efforts. Our Journey for a Clean Kearny seems to be making a difference. Recently a realtor cleaned up the yards of two homes for sale, which is sure to give them better curb appeal for a likely buyer. Oh, there’s more to do, of course. As soon as several homes and yards get cleaned up, the neglected homes and yards stand out all the more. Isn’t it great to shop at Norm’s Hometown Grocery? Norm and Myra Warren have taken on a tall task of owning the store and stocking it for our convenience. They are working through all the complexities of transition and soon all will be in order for a grand opening. Look forward, too, to the reopening of Cosmic Coffee on the other side of Alden Road!

as a public health entity. They are our eyes and ears in the communities we serve.” The cost of the handling the outbreak:

1,547 staff hours$51,571.85 in salary and ERE

$34,429.35 in vaccines and other supplies$86,001.00 Total cost

Schryer emphasized that this response to the measles outbreak expanded past the scope of public health. Many county departments had a role to play in assisting the department stop this outbreak. Members of the Emergency Management, Finance and Communications were named for their efforts in helping Public Health.

“We don’t have a very large staff,” Schryer explained. “We have a lean and very effective staff and we have a reason for that. Maintaining this lean staff allows us to use grant money to invest in the infrastructure that helps handle outbreaks like this”. Schryer added the key to keeping everyone focused to the job at hand is clarity and setting priorities. “All of us have a regular 8 to 5 job and there are duties that have to be completed day in and day out,” Schryer stated. “Public Health leaders have to give clarity to the staff to help them understand what

is most important at this time, clearly public safety was most important”. There was an added bit of pressure put on PCPHSD and the Arizona Department of Health Services due to the timing of the outbreak. The Super Bowl was just around the corner and the last thing the most watched championship game in the world needed was to have Measles as the pre-game show. “This was one of the reasons we stepped up our efforts,” Schryer said. “This game was a year in the planning and every federal agency was in on the planning. They wanted it to go off without a hitch.

And in the end, it did.” Schryer gave his thanks to the public health staff who handled this outbreak while he was out on medical leave. He stated “It is a testament to the strength and talent of our staff that they did a fantastic job when without me, it makes me very proud that we have such a great staff from top to bottom”. “One of the core reason county government exists are for issues like this,” Schryer concluded. “We keep people alive that could have died or suffered permanent health impacts from this very preventable disease.”
