PSHE Day

On March the 8th pupils worked with their tutors and external agencies to explore a range of moral, social and health related subjects. We had 38 experts to visit the school, to help deepen pupil’s knowledge of their current PSHE topic. Year 7—explored the expression Elephant in the Room! On the day, Year 7 rotated around a series of anti-bullying, diversity and art workshops as well as continuing to develop their knowledge about the risks of legal and illegal drugs. The highlight of the day was the creation of 80 Elephants that will now go on display. Each Elephant was hand crafted by a team of Year 7s and promotes its own word to encourage discussions around difficult social issues. Year 8—SWAMP (Students Working Against Marine Pollution) Year 8 met with the nationally recognised Surfers Against Sewage Campaign Manager, to develop their own en-vironmental enterprise venture for the SWAMP project that our Student Leadership Team pioneered. Pupils are now going to use inventive enterprise ideas to raise enough funds to pay for the transport to do a mass beach clean. They have also started to take action at school by making sure that litter isn’t a problem at Pool. Year 9—SAFE Year 9 have been looking at 'attitudes to risk' in their PSHE lessons and on this day they worked with the compa-ny SAFE to understand the issues surrounding healthy and unhealthy relationships. Pupils met with survivors of domestic abuse. They explored the dangers of sharing personal photos and the pres-sures placed on young people through the internet’s projection of body image. Year 10 and 11—Future Year 10 continued to develop their understanding of 'consequences'. The local NHS agency Brook, delivered a series of 7 workshops that explored the decisions individuals make surrounding relationships, drugs, and alcohol. The beer goggles were a really effective tool for discussing consequences. This was also complimented by a teenage yoga specialist. The Yoga for teenagers sessions, run by Helen Clare, as part of the PSHE day was an outstanding success. It en-gaged all pupils in each session from the elite athletes asking if it would be a good preparation for an event, and as an improvement to flexibility and as a aid to becoming calm. Year 11 focused on careers education. Pupils interested in an apprenticeship as a post 16 option, worked with Careers South West to register and apply for vacancies. The law, the effects of drugs and alcohol on individuals and personal relationships were also explored with an afternoon session that was delivered by Brook.

PE Students work out at Cornwall College

'Year 9 GCSE PE students have been working with the FE students from Cornwall College. They took

part in a circuits session and all had an induction to the gym. The students have been learning about

aerobic and anaerobic respiration which was demonstrated during the gym session and 'methods of

training' which the students learnt about by taking part in a circuit. All students said that they really en-

joyed working with each other at Cornwall College and want to do it more regularly!'

Daniel Norris, a past pupil of Pool Academy and Cornwall College has carved out quite a name for himself

in Hollywood!

Daniel, now 30 studied the BTEC National Diploma in Media Production at Cornwall College.

His first big break was carrying out some work experience at Channel 4 on a programme called ‘The Big Breakfast’ before being offered a full-time job with them. Daniel has also worked on ‘Ant & Dec’s Satur-

day Night Takeaway’.

He was then offered the job of Researcher on the ‘X Factor’! Before moving on to work on ‘Britain’s Got Tal-ent’ and ‘Britain’s Got More Talent’. During his time with the ‘X Factor’, Daniel worked his way up to Associ-

ate Producer and it was in 2012 that Daniel’s career took a bit of a Hollywood twist.

He started to work on ‘Got to Dance’ and it was during filming of the second series that the opportunity to

work in America came up. He then moved out to LA to work on the America’s Got Talent series.

Daniel is now working as a Producer on American Idol! Daniel has used his experience to get him where he

is today but it is what he learnt in education that led him into his first work experience post.

Mock Trial Competition 2013 The National Schools’ Mock Trial competition was held on Wednesday 6th March, in the Law Courts at

Bodmin.

The competition is open to year 8 and year 9 pupils, and is coordinated by the Citizenship Foundation, in

conjunction with the Magistrates Association.

Our team had a case study to read. The case this year

was very topical focusing on assault/battery, resulting in

a person being arrested for Common Assault contrary to

Section 39 of the Criminal Justices Act 1988. The team

then had to portray the characters in the case, playing

the parts of Magistrates, Lawyers, Witnesses, Usher, and

the Defendant, without the aid of scripts. The competition

was against Richard Lander School, Wadebridge

School, and Roseland Community School.

All the teams have worked really hard over the last few months, to reach the high standards, as was evident

in the way they presented their cases in Court.

Our team comprised of Elishia Moon, Kira Fouracre, Teresa Baker, Jordan Sleeman, Liam Pidwell, Gabriel

Newman, Sam Green, Sam Winterbourne, Brooke Godliman, Kasey Watkins, Cameron Gibson,

Fiona Pascoe and Callum Chapple.

Unfortunately we didn’t win, but were placed second! A truly magnificent effort.

Congratulations must go to our team, and thanks to Ms H. Exelby and Mr M. Redgrave (Magistrate) for their

help and support.

Pool Family X-C Championships

The Pool Family X-C Championships took place recently and Treloweth and Pencoys primaries took team honours, with Treloweth winning 4 of the 6 age groups and Pencoys the other two. Portreath and Roskear weighed in with one and two individual wins respectively. Winners: Individual—Team Year 4 Girls Rameesah Hassain -Treloweth Year 4 Boys Ryan Stokes—Treloweth Year 5 Girls Jade West—Pencoys Year 5 Boys Ben Opie—Pencoys Year 6 Girls Dani Wilkes—Treloweth Year 6 Boys Clifford Moore—Treloweth

Peninsula Area X-C Championships

An impressive number of our Sports Leaders from Year 7-11 helped organise our area X-C races for two hours after school recently and they dealt with the stresses of coping with 400 young athletes plus relatives and staff very well. A particular highlight was Connor Davey and Will O'Neill leading a warm-up for the massed ranks (and the lads' faces when they were asked to do it!). Athletes from our 5 family schools competed, with none making the coveted top 15 to go forward to the Cornwall Finals. Clifford Moore and Taylor Hosking were our top performers, just missing out in 18th and 19th respectively in the Year 6 Boys, with Piran Phil-lips 24th in the Year 5 boys. Area results are on our website!
