What is Pompeii?

• Pompeii is a city in Italy, but it is famous for the volcano Mt. Vesuvius. When Mt. Vesuvius erupted in year AD 79, it took the lives of many people who inhabited the city of Pompeii. It is now left in ruins.

Location

• It is a small Roman town near the modern city Naples near the Italian region of Campania.

Architecture

• One of the most fascinating architectural buildings in Pompeii was the Villa of the Mysteries. It is almost completely a normal building, until you get to one room. This one room is now called “The Initiation Chamber”. The frescoes on the walls of this room indicate that it was once used to prepare privileged, protected girls for motherhood.

• A common form of architecture in not only Pompeii, but ancient Rome in general, were the forums. They were the political, commercial, and social heart of the town. Most major businesses and buildings were built in or around the forum.

Tourist Attractions

• Pompeii itself is a very interesting place to visit, but there are a few popular places to see when you visit there.

• There is the Castellum Acquae which is the aqueduct they used before Mt. Vesuvius erupted.

• Another very popular attraction is the Vettius House. It contains galleries of ancient art that weren’t hit by the eruption.

Importance to History

• The small town of Pompeii has been very influential in terms of architecture. The people of Pompeii were the first to create amphitheaters, bakeries, and other various buildings as well. They set a great example for civilizations today.

Politics in Pompeii

• In Pompeii, they had a feminist government. Meaning that they applied a feminist perspective on all actions they took as a town.

Fun fact?

After Mt. Vesuvius erupted, it rained, and the ashes from the volcano mixed with the rain,
