Basic Facts About Pompeii The Pompeii area was mostly destroyed
by 16 feet of ash that buried people and homes. Pompeii has not
been rebuilt and it still lies in ruins. One-third is buried by ash
and the other two-thirds are used for tourism to see what ancient
life was like. Some people say that the 79 A.D. eruption of Mount
Vesuvius may have been the worst eruption in history. Since 79
A.D., Mount Vesuvius has erupted more than 50 times and is possible
to erupt soon. In 63 A.D., there was a massive earthquake that
still produces minor earth tremors today. The eruption occurred in
Pompeii, Italy. The eruption occurred on August 24, 79 A.D. Pompeii
is 160 acres. The name of the volcano that erupted is called Mount
Vesuvius. Pompeii was rediscovered in 1599 when people were digging
an underground channel to the river Sarno. People knew about the
eruption because of stories, but they were forgotten over time.
About 16 feet of ash covered Pompeii. Much thicker then pyroclastic
flows. (Pyroclastic flows are one of the most dangerous of volcanic
phenomenon. They are hurricanes of hot gasses and volcanic
particles) People got to tell people about the eruption, but
eventually people forgot completely about Pompeii. Pompeii is a
town at the base of mount Vesuvius. When it erupted, buildings and
bodies were preserved as they were in 79 A.D.

Mount Vesuvius Mount Vesuvius is about 4,000 feet high. It
originally started out as a submarine volcano. A submarine volcano
is a volcano that starts off underwater and gets bigger as it
erupts by the lava building a mountain. Mount Vesuvius is a
stratovolcano. A stratovolcano is made up off many layers of
hardened lava, tephera, pumice, and volcanic ash. The last mount
Vesuvius eruption was in 1944 during World War II. It destroyed
allied forces and planes stationing nearby. Mount Vesuvius is still
active today and is due to erupt soon. Mount Vesuvius is 4,190 feet
high and 30 miles around its base. Geologists estimate mount
Vesuvius is about 17,000 years old. Since 79 A.D., mount Vesuvius
has erupted more than 50 times. For example 303, 536, 969, 1500,
1872, and 1944.

The Big Event The eruption covered more then 2,000 square
miles. Just inside the volcano there was lava, but the eruption
didnt spit out any just ash Ash rolled down the volcano at speeds
of 70 miles per hour. About 2,000 people in Pompeii died. Survivors
only survived for 19 hours since the eruption. The eruption was 24
hours long and took as long to be destroyed. Warriors from a nearby
island called Stabiei got in boats to sail to Pompeii, but never
made it. As the eruption occurred, people brought money and jewelry
with them as they fled. People had time to flee the village. About
20,000 people in the area escaped. What people think caused the
eruption was the minor earth tremors since the major quake in 63
A.D.
