CLASS IX ( Chapter-3) Political science

Topic- Constitutional Design

Sub topic – Framing of the Constitution of S. Africa

Task- Power-point Presentation

Divide class into three groups. Group 1 will represent social groups present in S Africa, which again will have two sub groups (blacks and the whites).

Group 2 will represent political groups like that of members of ANC including Nelson Mandela, representatives of white community.

Group 3 will be of international media (BBC, CNN, Doordarshan etc)

Once the teams are made they would make their presentations.

This is a group task – Role Play of leaders who fought for Democracy in respective countries – S Africa, India, Myanmar.

Divide the class into groups. Each team will be assigned a country. Once they are prepared, they will present themselves in class.

The group has to showcase picture of the leader, along with the National Flag and depicting map of the concerned country on the Blackboard.

Task – 3 Designing Constitutions

Creating 2 constitutions with your own set of rules and get it passed in the class. Divide the class into 2 groups and each group makes its own constitution. A day will be given to them to make a class-presentation of the same.

Expected Learning outcomes: At the end of the learners will be able to

1. explain the policy of apartheid practiced in S. Africa.2. grasp the role of black political leaders in anti-apartheid

struggle (For example Nelson Mandela)3. understand international pressure on S Africa to end

apartheid.4. relate these with the air of change in the form of release of

Nelson Mandela.5. understand the apprehensions of both the groups (oppressor

and oppressed) and how their interests were taken care of in the new Constitution.

Criteria for assessmentAt the end of the task the learners were able to

1. represent the conditions of blacks and the whites in S Africa before 1994 (i.e., when apartheid was practiced).

2. explain the international community stand on the issue of apartheid.

3. understand the compromise formula incorporated in the new constitution of S Africa, which safeguarded the interests of both the blacks and the whites and thus became an inspiration for the democracies all over the world?

C: Task : To conduct Mock Elections

Teacher will brainstorm the learners on election process and elicit the required information. Then the class will be divided into 4 groups and one group will be made Election commission and three groups will be asked to become political parties and the rest will act as voters.

Each group will be asked to collect information on the given task to present in the mock election. (Period 1)

On day one Election Commission group will announce the elections and code of conduct will also be spelled out. (Period 2)On day 2 Nominations will be filed. (Period 3)On day 3 Campaigning by political parties (Period 4) On day 4 Polling and Counting of votes.

Task – 2 - Debate Collect information related to educational qualifications of MLA’s of your area/ constituency and share data in class and hold debate/ discussion on whether educational qualification should be a sure criteria for contesting election.

Task – 3 Collage Make a collage of caricatures /cartoons showing drawbacks of Indian electoral system.

D. Expected Learning Outcomes:At the end of the task the learners will be able 1. explain the concept of Elections and Representative Democracy.2. know actual Electoral process, role of Political parties, Election commission and voters. 3. talk intelligently about campaigning, parties their symbols and importance of their vote.

E. Criteria of Assessment At the end of the task the learners were able to 1. adequately present the information/data they had collected.2. make adequate use of the Newspapers and other resources. 3. involve all the members of group in presentation.

For this each group will have to collect information on the selected Right from various sources such as Newspapers, encyclopedia and internet etc.
