Political Parties1. Trace the steps of the rise of the two party system in the US.

The United States has a two party system. These two parties are the Democrats and Republicans. The first division was in the early republic. The disputes over the constitution caused the first division between federalists and antifederalists. Next came the two parties became the democrats and the whigs. Lastly we became the two party system we are today between Democrats and Republicans.

2. What are the role of the third parties in the US two party system. (give examples of third parties in the US)

- Libertarian

- Green Party

- Constitution Party

3. What are the other types of party systems throughout the world and give examples of the countries that have a particular party system.

- Dominant Party: South Africa

- Non-Partisan: Kuwait

- Single-Party: China

- Two-Party: United States

- Multi-Party: Brazil

4. Describe how the democrats and republicans differ through their platform (planks).

Democrats are more liberal and Republicans are more conservative.

5. Describe the organization of the political parties at the national,state and local levels.

At all levels elections are held. Elections are hold for the towns, then ones for the whole state, and on up to the national level.

6. What are political machines and describe the role of Tammany Hall and how it lead to a check on political parties.

Political machines are people who control a party. Tammany Hall was run by Boss Tweed that had a series of scandals and ran the city until he was finally thrown out.

7. Describe the nominating process of candidates from the primaries to the nomination convention.

- Caucus: meeting of party leaders to name candidates

- Convention: meeting of delegates to name candidates

- Primary Elections: special election held by party members to determine candidates

8. What are the roles/responsibility of a political party in helping the people of the US.

- Represent the people

- Make changes as needed

- Try and act in the best intent of the country
