Conditions-Environment & Loading

CONFERENCE INFORMATION

Introduction

The 8th international conference on concrete under severe

conditions-environment & loading, will be held in Lecco on 12 -14

September 2016. The objective of the Conference is to focus on

the issues of concrete infrastructures and private buildings, either

subjected to severe environment or loading, or any combination

of severe conditions.

Experience from the performance of existing concrete structures,

and especially under severe environmental conditions, accidental

loading or extended lifespan, has demonstrated the urgent need

for better understanding on the mechanism of deterioration,

caused by coupling of loading and environmental factors, an

improved basis for documentation of obtained construction quality

and durability properties during concrete construction, the

integration of structural and durability degradation with time,

performance-based material requirements, and loading carrying

ability and durability scientifically unified service life design.

The conference is supported by both fib (The International

Federation for Structural Concrete) and Rilem (The International

Union of Laboratories and Experts in Construction Materials,

Systems and Structures).

Conference papers

Accepted papers will be published as a number of the Journal

Key Engineering Materials (www.scientific.net).

Conference Venue

The conference will

take place in Lecco

directly on the Lake

Como that is one of

the most beautiful

areas in Lombardy.

This pre-alpine lake surrounded by a crown of mountains with

peaks up to 2700m high, is not only spectacular but rich in history

and tradition. Splendid 17th century villas with their lovely

gardens, antique Romanesque churches, old connection trails,

mountain tops with a superb view of the lake, and lots of sport

facilities are available. Lake Como is situated 45 km north of

Milan, close to the Swiss border.

It is 46 km long and has the form of an upside down Y dividing

itself into two branches at the town Bellagio with the town Como

at the tip of the southwestern branch and the town Lecco at the

tip of the southeastern branch. Its crystal clear waters are up to

400 deep, making it one of the deepest lakes in Europe.

By boat you can enjoy the view of the shores dotted with small

towns of rare beauty, by bus or car you can discover the valleys

with their rural settlements and small churches and on foot or by

mountain bike you explore the many trails a round the lake. To

the South, it gives way to the verdant landscape of the area called

Brianza, with villages, castles and hills marked by the flow of the

Adda and Lambro Rivers.

Lecco Campus

The conference will

be held at Polo di

Lecco that is one of

several international

campuses of the

Politecnico di Milano.

Ever since 2006, year

in which the Master Programs in English were first introduced, the

presence of international students has steadily increased. In the first

seven years of these programs, a total of 621 students from all over

the world have participated.

Today, 19% of the entire student population who lives and studies in

Lecco, and which amounts to more than 1,600, are foreign students.

This constant growth rate seems to predict greater international

participation in the near future.

Consequently, our campus is a multicultural platform where students

can practice and improve their knowledge of English as well as

develop long-lasting friendships with others from diverse linguistic

and ethnic backgrounds.

Polo di Lecco have a brand new university campus: 40,000 m2

dedicated to instruction, research and student services. This means

modern classrooms where innovative teaching can take place,

“state-of-the-arts” labs, and on-campus living space for 204

international and non-resident of Lecco students.

Conference social events

During the conference, all the participants will have the opportunity to

enjoy Italian culture, architecture and food thanks to two social

events that will be organized on monday and thusday evening.

Concert at Lecco Theatre – Monday 12th Spet.

Conference participants will

have the opportunity to attend a

classical music concert that will

be held in the beautiful Theatre

of Society. This theatre is

placed in Lecco downtown in

Piazza Garibaldi. It was

designed by the local architect

Giuseppe Bovara and was

inaugurated on 1844 with “Anna

Bolena” by Gaetano Donizzetti.

The theatre has the typical Neoclassical style and was built by the

will of some Lecco’s families, being part of the nobility and upper

middle class, but it was

immediately open to all the

citizens and the gods was built

for them in order they can enjoy

shows thus avoiding to wander

in the night.

The theatre inside hosts a beautiful fresco on its vault by the

contemporary artist Orlando Sora.

Social Dinner in a medieval castle – Thusday 13th Spet.

The social dinner of the

conference will be held on

Thusday evening in the

atmosphere of an old

medieval castle.

The actual founding date goes back to 900 AD when a military

outpost arose on the plateau, in which two vaulted entrances led to

the square center, and inside the court was a well. The first floor and

square tower dates back to 1100. The building was expanded in

1200 and the court lost its characteristic central structure. The most

ancient remains of the center are still visible in the facade that faces

the cemetery. It originally consisted of four aligned buildings built on

two levels, plus a basement, a tower and a wall bordering the Castle

and the Church.

It has been said that the

construction of this Castle,

as it is seen today, was

desired by Cardinal

Beltramino, who was the

most influential character of the Parravicini family alive during the

first half of the sixteenth century. However, a document from the

parish archives refers to the birth of Beltramino taking place inside

the Castle, leaving us to believe that it was not he who founded the

castle, but rather the one that restored it and brought it to splendor.

proof of the ability of the medieval people of conveying a full balance

between art and nature, creating places of great beauty.

The theme of
