Bahnert Labor choice in Blain TERRITORY Labor has con- firmed police officer Geoff Bahnert will be its candidate in the upcoming by-election for the Palmerston seat of Blain. “Geoff is a familiar face to people in Blain having contest- ed the seat in the 2012 elec- tion and is a strong local candidate,’’ Opposition leader Delia Lawrie said on Monday. The by-election was prompted by the shock resig- nation of former CLP chief minister Terry Mills, who de- feated Mr Bahnert for the seat at the 2012 election. Mr Mills decided his pres- ence and rumours of internal discord were detracting from the business of government. “I think people need to have confidence in their govern- ment and I thought it would be best if I make a decision at this point to step back and provide support in a different way,’’ he said when he resigned on Thursday last week. The battle for Blain will be tough for Labor, which has never held the seat, covering parts of Moulden, Woodroffe, Rosebery, Zuccoli and Bella- mack. Mr Mills, who first won it in a by-election in 1999, easily defeated Mr Bahnert in 2012. The veteran cop admitted it would be difficult to turn things around. “I don’t shy away from how tough this is going to be, but I’m hitting the ground running and look forward to catching up with residents again,’’ Mr Bahnert said. He has taken leave from his job as a watch commander with NT Police. Meanwhile, the CLP, bat- tling against the loss of a popu- lar incumbent and an expected swing against them, is yet to name a candidate. Police officer Geoff Bahnert is contesting the seat of Blain.

Bahnert Labor choice in Blain TERRITORY Labor has con-firmed police officer Geoff Bahnert will be its candidate in the upcoming by-election for the Palmerston seat of Blain.
