Our Dashing Hero Dashes Off…Again

Almost 40 years ago Ross Poldark galloped across the TV screens of millions of PBS viewers, vexing villains and winning female hearts in one of MASTERPIECE’s earliest hit series, Poldark. Now the gallant hero not only rides again, he returns for a fourth season of derring-do.

Aidan Turner (The Hobbit) stars as Ross Poldark, a redcoat who returns to Cornwall after battle only to discover that his father is dead, his lands are ruined and his true love is engaged to another. What ensues is Poldark’s quest to change his destiny, restore his lost fortune and reclaim his love.

It’s now 1796; and to defend Cornwall and those he loves from an empowered George Warleggan, Ross risks everything he holds dear as he embarks on a political journey which takes him to the nation’s capital…and into new perils.

Meanwhile, Demelza (Eleanor Tomlinson) finds her loyalties torn, Elizabeth (Heida Reed) tries to strengthen her marriage, Morwenna (Ellise Chappell) continues to be oppressed by husband Reverend Ossie Whitworth (Christian Brassington) and the Enyses (Luke Norris and Gabriella Wilde) are tested as never before.

The drama and intrigue begin anew Sunday, Sept. 30 at 8 pm/9 Mtn.

From the Board…KSPS Public Television has always celebrated great literature through dramas such as MASTERPIECE.

This summer and fall, we’re doing it a bit more literally — and you are invited to take part.

As you may remember, The Great American Read began in May with a two-hour launch episode in which the list of 100 best-loved books was revealed and viewers were encouraged to vote for their favorites. Starting September 11 at 8 pm, and for the next six Tuesdays, one-hour themed episodes will examine concepts common to groups of books on the list. The Grand Finale airs October 23, when the final results — the number one book! — will be revealed.

At this writing, about 2 million votes have been cast. How about yours? Friends and neighbors in U.S. and Canada, you still have time to cast your ballot for your favorite books among the 100. You can vote daily so visit our website (www.ksps.org) and click on The Great American Read. Voting ends the night of October 18. Vote and join your fellow Public Television fans to celebrate literature and reading. You may just find some good books on that list that you haven’t read.

CELEBRATING ARTISTS, AUTHORS & OTHER MASTERS OF THEIR CRAFT –

American Masters:Everybody Knows…Elizabeth Murray

Friday, Sept. 7, 9 pmTake an intimate look at artist Elizabeth Murray, voiced by Meryl Streep.

This film chronicles her remarkable journey from an impoverished childhood to artistic maverick and reconsiders her place in contemporary art history.

Basquiat: Rage to RichesFriday, Sept. 14, 9 pm

Discover Jean-Michel Basquiat, the once-anonymous graffiti artist who became a rock star of the early ’80s art scene in New York — and whose work ultimately commanded millions. It took less than a decade for the accountant’s son from Brooklyn to rise to dizzying heights.

ItzhakSunday, Oct. 14, 5 pmExplore the life of the famous

violinist Itzhak Perlman, a polio survivor whose parents emigrated from Poland to Israel. With warmth and humor, conversations with musicians, friends and his wife of 50 years tell the story of this transcendent performer.

MASTERPIECEThe Durrells in Corfu Season 3 Sundays, 7 pm beginning Sept. 30Hailed by The Wall Street Journal as “an island of charm,” The Durrells in Corfu returns for a third season of eccentric family adventures on a Greek isle in the 1930s. Based on the memoirs of Gerald Durrell, the animal-loving youngest member of the clan, the series stars Keeley Hawes as the plucky widowed mother, Louisa Durrell. The bohemian Durrells fit right in with the light-hearted Greeks — except when they disastrously don’t.

DramaDramaDrama

October has been designated as “National Estate Planning Awareness Month” by fundraisers across the country. I hope that you, as a donor, will think about it too! Estate planning is a wonderful way to support organizations that you feel passionate about and leave a lasting gift to your community. In the case of KSPS, that gift is one of education, new ideas and excellent media. While the new tax code has changed many of the deductibility rules, I find that tax benefits are rarely a motivator for supporting a cause you believe in. If you are interested in discussing a gift for KSPS, please contact me:

Giving Back…For All You've Given UsAs I write this, we’ve just finished FitKids Day 2018. For those of you who have never heard of it or

attended, FitKids Day debuted in August 2013 as a way for KSPS to give back to the community.

The Ferris High School baseball field was the venue; Daniel Tiger was our featured guest, Clifford the Big Red Dog and AquaDuck made appearances and there were fun and games for everyone.

We wondered what the attendance would be…we figured a hundred, maybe two, for this inaugural event. 500 people (of all ages) joined us.

A few weeks later, another big event occurred — thanks to Spokane Public Schools — Friends of KSPS assumed the license for KSPS and became the newest community-licensed PBS station.

Now 6 years later, FitKids Day has moved from the baseball field to the football field; and we topped 1,700 people enjoying a great day of fun with Curious George, The Man in the Yellow Hat and — once again — Clifford and AquaDuck.

It’s just one of many ways we try to give back to our communities: from hosting The Wall That Heals last summer; to holding screening parties for PBS dramas (Downton Abbey, Victoria); and, most recently, conducting teacher workshops organized and run by our Education Director. We bring you candidate debates and issue forums, Congressional Town Hall meetings and issue-based documentaries like our homelessness-focused Hidden in Plain Sight.

KSPS has a long history of serving our communities — and that includes our Friends in Alberta and B.C., who always find a way to support what we do. When I speak to them (and our Spokane area members,) about why they support us, the answers are varied; but the message is the same — it’s the programming we bring to their homes (through antenna, cable and satellite) and to their hands (through pbs.org, Passport and the PBSKids app.)

But it’s the people that make it happen: the 30+ members of the KSPS family who work every day to make sure you get to watch what you want, where you want; the Friends of KSPS Board that gives us the direction to make sure we stay true to our mission; and the KSPS Community Advisory Board that speaks for all of you.

In the end, we can’t do it without you. So, as we end this fiscal year, we head into the new year thankful for your support and looking forward to what’s next.

Sincerely,

Gary Stokes

FitKids Day Promotes Fun and Fitness2018 was the 6th year for KSPS FitKids Day and our largest ever. Over 1,700 people — children and their families — enjoyed

unstructured outdoor play at the Ferris High School football field on August 3rd, celebrating an active lifestyle. Curious George and The Man in the Yellow Hat were there to meet everyone, along with Spokane’s own Aqua Duck, Defender of the Aquifer and Clifford, the Big Red Dog. Nearly 50 volunteers and most of the KSPS staff made everything happen, from blowing up giant inflatables to staffing the parachute games, tunnels, kites, bubbles and plenty of games and activities on the grass. Even toddlers found plenty to do, thanks to the Spokane County Library District.

We thank Peirone Produce Co. for donating apples and bananas — they were in high demand! — and to Spokane City Water Department for providing fresh water from their mobile trailer. Thanks also to our generous FitKids sponsor, Silverwood Theme Park. We couldn’t have done it without you! Mark your calendar for the first Friday in August, 2019, for the next FitKids Day!

Karen Smith1943-2018We are saddened to lose our wonderful volunteer, Karen Smith. She had some medical issues in recent months and passed away peacefully August 11th. Karen staffed our front desk on Thursday mornings, greeting visitors and taking calls, plus filling in other times when her calendar allowed. She was a huge fan of MASTERPIECE and “too many other programs to list.” We enjoyed her friendly chats and kind words. We will miss our sweet friend tremendously.

MultiCare — Proud to Serve Inland Northwest Communities

KSPS Public Television recognizes MultiCare as part of our distinguished family of valued corporate sponsors. MultiCare Health System is a not-for-profit health care organization with more than 18,000 team members, including employees, providers and volunteers. They’ve been caring for their communities for well over a century, since the founding of Tacoma’s first hospital. Today, MultiCare is the largest community-based, locally governed health system in the state of Washington.

In addition to MultiCare Deaconess Hospital and MultiCare Valley Hospital, they offer numerous services including specialty services, primary care and urgent care throughout the community at MultiCare Rockwood Clinics. These facilities serve people living in Eastern Washington, North Idaho and western Montana — delivering the highest quality care. MultiCare is committed to caring for our patients and our communities, because they believe in partnering for healing and a healthy future for the greater Spokane region.

We thank them for their support and encourage you to learn more at multicare.org.

“Broadway’s Best” Coming to Great Performances

An American in Paris The Musical Friday, Nov. 2

The 1951 MGM film starring Gene Kelly was inspired by George Gershwin’s score and became one of the most famous movie musicals, winning six Academy Awards. In 2015,

a new stage adaptation of the film, directed and choreographed by Christopher Wheeldon, opened on Broadway and earned four Tony Awards. During its May, 2017 run in London’s West End, the Broadway production was recorded with its original stars, Tony nominees Robert Fairchild and Leanne Cope.

Rodgers & Hammerstein’s The Sound of Music Friday, Nov. 9

Great Performances presents the 2015 live U.K. broadcast of the Rodgers and Hammerstein classic starring Kara Tointon as Maria, Julian Ovenden as Captain von Trapp, Katherine Kelley as Baroness Schraeder, Alexander Armstrong as Max and Maria Friedman as the Mother Abbess.

The second year of the Broadway-themed series will include the filmed West End performance of An American in Paris and the 2015 live U.K. broadcast of The Sound of Music.
