Runner-up Posh Totty was conceding10lb and third-placed My Flora was dirty at the nose post-race, but this well-bred mare won in style – it was her firstrun over fences following a single bumper run when fourthlast year. FLYING THE FLAG FOR BRITISH BREEDING

The emphatic success of the British-bred Coneygree(Karinga Bay) last week was not only a momentousoccasion for the Oaksey family, but it was also theculmination of a significant week for British breeding.

National Hunt yards and studs across the country canbe enthused and inspired by a novice chaser taking thefeature race of the Festival, but they should also bereassured the statistic that showed the British-bredwinners-to-runners ratio at Cheltenham comparedfavourably to that of the Irish-bred.

After a week that saw GB National Hunt-breds win threeraces at Cheltenham and all by British National Huntstallions, as well as three other British-breds placed inGr.1s, National Hunt breeders will hopefully be proud andmotivated by the picture these results paint.

Commenting on the results from the Festival, LouiseKemble, TBA CEO, said: “As our economic impact studyrevealed; In 2013, just 647 National Hunt-bred foals wereborn in GB compared to 2,400 in Ireland. The Cheltenham

Festival proves that performance and quality of British-breds deserves further support. The TBA are continuing toexplore schemes and incentives to support National Hunt, but we hope that these latest figures show Britishbreeding has a promising future.”

BUDGET ANNOUNCEMENT ONINTRODUCTION OF BETTING RIGHTFollowing the announcement by Chancellor of theExchequer George Osborne MP in yesterday’s Budgetthat the Government will “support the British Racingindustry by introducing a Horserace Betting Right”, BritishHorseracing Authority Chief Executive Nick Rust, speaking on behalf of British Racing, said: “Theannouncement is a welcome and tremendous boost forthe tens of thousands of people across the country thatderive their livelihoods from our sport. The Government, the Minister for Sport and Tourism Helen Grant MP andpoliticians from the major parties all recognise theimportance of a fair and sustainable funding mechanismfor British Racing.“British Racing – its governing body, racecourses and

horsemen – has a collective desire for a modern and directrelationship with the Betting industry, and believes that aRacing Right is the best solution to achieve this, and tosecure the long-term prosperity of our sport and thosewithin it. We are still in the situation whereby the vastmajority of bets placed by punters outside of bettingshops are making no contribution to the central financesof the sport. This is unsustainable, and there is recognitionthat this needs to change.“We are extremely grateful in particular for the support of

Helen Grant MP and Matt Hancock MP to help us reach thisstage, as well as to all of those across the industry whosubmitted letters of support during the consultation period.“The hard work will continue, throughout the

forthcoming General Election campaign and beyond, andwith the Betting industry, as we look to have a RacingRight introduced as soon as is possible. We remaincommitted to ensuring that a Racing Right works for all

Cantering clear from the last fence, this youngster scoredimpressively at Kirkistown on Saturday, and while therunner-up remains a maiden after four races there wasplenty to like about the winner, who made all from fourrivals. He was bought as a foal by his trainer, who failed tosell him at the Derby Sale two years ago – that may provefortunate, for after a good third on debut at Maralin(winner Baby Bach has won a bumper since) he scoredreadily at the second time of asking.

WINDERMERE AND RUSSELLHEAD TO THE WHITE HOUSE

Galway-based besoke fine art Equine PhotographerMartina Regan’s specially commissioned portrait of Gr.1Gold Cup winner Lord Windermere and jockey DavyRussell was presented to President Obama on St Patrick’sDay in the White House by Henry Healy (Obama’s eighthcousin from Moneygall, Co Offaly).

The Equine Photographer was approached to captureon camera the prominence and the respect of the thrivinghorse racing and breeding industry in Ireland. Shot at JimCulloty’s yard in Churchtown, the captivating imageillustrates the bond between jockey and horse. “It is oneof honesty, trust, mutual respect and above all the will towin,” explained Martina Regan.

Lord Windermere is trained by Jim Culloty, at his yard inMount Corbitt, Churchtown, Mallow, Co. Cork. He is aformer National Hunt jockey, three-time Gold Cup winneras a jockey and a Gold Cup-winning trainer.“We have a massive pride in horses and horse racing in

Ireland. Our bond between horses and people – whetherthey are professional jockeys, leisure riders or trainers – itruns deep and is one which is deeply respected and

valued. So capturing the relationship between Davy andLord Windermere was an incredible experience to be partof,” explained Martina.

The Equine Photographer showcases the captivatingbeauty and elegance of a horse in its natural environment, and the enduring relationship of a horse and its owner.Born out of the personal passion Martina has for horseriding and nature, she creates dramatic and emotiveimages which portray the enthralling beauty of a horse.“Ireland has always had a strong affinity to horses, from

President Obama’s ancestors using them to travel toChurch, to the modern day where we have a vibrant racingindustry. The Celtic symbolism of a horse is one ofdurability and success and this image of Davy Russell andLord Windermere symbolises both, which Martina hascaptured perfectly in this portrait I am presenting toPresident Obama,” said Henry Healy.

SAVARIA LANDS NEW ZEALAND OAKS

A masterly training performance and an outstanding ridelanded a betting coup for Savaria’s (NZ) (Savabeel)connections when she reigned supreme in Saturday’s Gr.1Wellfield New Zealand Oaks at Trentham.

Trainer Roydon Bergerson had the filly at the top of hergame to land the Classic for owners Des and Kay Fleming. “Des has slaughtered the bookmakers and got more

than the winning stake off the TAB,” a jubilant and relievedBergerson said.

Platinum Witness’ (California Dane) brave effort forsecond ahead of Charmont (High Chaparral) wasenough to secure her the New Zealand Bloodstock Filly ofthe Year title.

The Flemings have been breeding thoroughbreds formore than three decades, but changed tack when theywent to Karaka in 2013 and purchased Savaria for$110,000.

A maiden winner on New Year’s Day, Savaria’s sharedvictory with Platinum Witness in the Gr.3 Lowland Stakesearned her Oaks favouritism.“She has come through the race really well and we will

make up our minds next Monday whether she will go tothe ATC Oaks or not,” Bergerson said.“We’ll see how well she bounces back during the week,

although at this stage I’m thinking we might as well carryon and have a go and then give her a good spell after that.”

The $A1 million Gr.1 ATC Oaks will be run on 11th Aprilat Randwick, where Savaria would be bidding for a thirdNew Zealand-trained victory in the Classic in the last sixyears.

Savabeel, a Gr.1 Cox Plate-winning son of Zabeel, whostands at Waikato Stud, recorded his seventh individualGr.1 winner thanks to Savaria’s success.

Across the Tasman another daughter of Savabeel turnedin an impressive performance with two-year-oldPasadena Girl (NZ) remaining unbeaten in her two startsto date, both at Stakes level.

IFFWEDANCE DELIVERS ST LEGER SUCCESS

Iffwedance (NZ) showed he had the heart to match hisample frame when he posted a gallant victory in the ListedNew Zealand St Leger.

A mountain of a horse, the son of Iffraaj provided hispart-owner Rex Fell, of Goodwood Stud, with the perfect70th birthday present at Trentham when he earned thethick end of the stake.“He’s a beautiful horse to train and it’s a real privilege to

have him,” said trainer Trina Riddell, whose husbandJonathan rode the gelding.“He’s a really big horse at 17.1 hands and 620 kilos is his

racing weight. Time isn’t going to hurt him.”Riddell is confident Iffwedance can develop into a

genuine contender for next season’s feature cups andSaturday’s success was a major stepping stone towardsthe open grade.“He over-raced a bit early, but Jonathan rode him

perfectly and he saw the distance out well. It was a bigeffort with the 59.5kg,” Riddell said.

The pacemaker Sheezababe (NZ) (Zabeel) ralliedgamely, but Iffwedance proved superior in the closing 150metres for the third win of his 18-start career.

Iffraaj stands the southern hemisphere season at HaunuiFarm and his best southern performers to date includethis season’s Gr.1 NZ Two Thousand Guineas winner TurnMe Loose (NZ), plus Gr.2-winning fillies Serena Miss (NZ)and Fix (NZ) among a host of other quality performers.
