Two local, valued industry partners have been working with Mountain View High School’s Cooperative Educa-tion Program for the past decade. They have hired dozens of student interns and helped them gain valu-able industry experience in the fields of engineering and manufacturing. Many of these students have con-tinued to work at their job while attending a four-year degree program.

GECO ENGINEERING INC. / www.gecoinc.com1754 N. 58th Street, Mesa, AZ

Geco Engineering Inc., an engineering firm, specializes in the design and manufacture of imbedded soft-ware and hardware for critical environments. As a key supplier for Boeing, General Dynamics, and the U.S. Military, Geco provides the perfect training ground for young aspiring engineers with an interest in any one of several engineering disciplines.

Owners Jennifer and George Graves have been amaz-ing supporters of our program for 10 years. They have employed – and continue to employ – dozens of our best and brightest engineering students and are always willing to adjust work schedules to accommodate those pursuing a four-year degree.

NEUTEK INC. / www.neuteklabs.com2942 N. Greenfield Rd. #121, Mesa AZ

“Established in 1998, Neutek LLC is a Solid State Light-ing (SSL) company, first, and a product design com-pany, second. Its first product debut was an instant

sellout on QVC and HSN television. Dozens of other hit products followed with the majority of its portfolio fully engaging the current Light Emitting Diode (LED) lighting revolution. The company has nearly a hundred years of combined industry experience to produce best-in-class OE / ODM products in today’s market.

“Neutek manufactures highly functional, yet simple, lighting products for a wide range of applications, including architectural, recreational, trucking, indus-trial and safety. Individuals in the company are LED Luminaire Inventors and Patent Holders with extensive industry knowledge for a wide range of SSL related products and services.” (www.neuteklab.com/about)

Neutek’s owner – Kelly Walterscheid – has supported our program for more than eight years. He has hired and trained dozens of students. In fact, the majority of his workforce is made up of current and former Moun-tain View Co-op students.

Without industry partners such as these, Mesa Public Schools and Mountain View High School would never be able to offer the level of comprehensive education and internships that we have. Cooperative education would not be possible. We are extremely grateful and fortunate for the tremendous support of these valued industry partners and look forward to continuing our work together for many years to come.

ATTENTION JUNIORS: UNITED STATES SERVICE ACADEMIES

SERVICE ACADEMY SUMMER SEMINARS – APPLY SOON!

Is a service academy in your future? Are you interested in a high quality, college education? Do you possess strong academic and leadership skills? Are you athletically inclined with a commitment to personal fitness? Are you mentally capable of handling stressful situations?

If these qualities describe you, you may be the type of student qualified for enrollment in a United States Service Academy. The application process to a United States Service Academy starts in December of your junior year. If you are interested in finding out more about the Air Force Academy, the Naval Academy, West Point, or the Merchant Marines – and the application process – see Ms. Schultz in the Advisement Office before semester break.

During the summer, each Service Academy hosts week-long Summer Seminars. The goal of the seminar is to introduce students to the life and aspects of a Service Academy.

Check out the websites for the most accurate informa-tion, specific dates, and tuition. If you have additional questions, please see Ms. Schultz in the Advisement Office.

There are five Service Academies in the United States. If you are interested in attending the Air Force, Naval, Military, Merchant Marine, or Coast Guard Academy, please see Ms. Schultz in the Counseling Office by the end of February. Preparation for the application process begins this spring. These are critical steps in the process:

1. Register to take either the ACT or SAT exams in the spring of your junior year.

2. Make sure your Mountain View schedule reflects classes that demonstrate rigorous and challenging college preparatory curriculum. Performing well in an Advanced Placement class will help prepare you for the rigorous academics offered at the academies.

Academies are looking for individuals who demon-strate academic excellence, as well as athletic ability, leadership and community service. The profile of a typical cadet includes the following composites: 60% Academic – High school performance, grades, and SAT/ACT scores 20% Extracurricular – Athletic participation, leader ship positions (scouts, school clubs, class officer) public/community involvement and work experience 20% Admissions Panel – Faculty/staff review and Admissions Liaison Officer interview

2017-2018 REGISTRATION

Although the school year is only half over, planning for the 2017-2018 school year is already underway by the administration and advisement staff.

By late January, students will receive registration information and will have several days to select courses for the following year. We ask students to refer to their specific diploma requirements and their graduation status reports on their Student Portal; students should also get input from their teachers, parents, and advisors to carefully select appropriate classes.

Please assist your student in this process by doing the following: (1) Help your students carefully select the appropriate classes, (2) sign the registration form, and (3) return the form to school on time. Thank you, in advance, from the Advisement Department for your attention to this important task.

Remind.com The Student Advisement office and Career Center are trying an additional form of communication this year with seniors.  If any senior (or their parent) would like a reminder of college/university visits or new available

scholarships, please sign up.  It’s very easy via text. Text @mvtvisits to 81010. We never see your phone number, nor will you see ours.

LOOKING AHEAD TO AP EXAMS

AP students—Mark your calendars! AP exams will be given at Mountain View starting on May 12, 2017. Ex-ams must be ordered from February 1-10. Order forms will be distributed in all AP classes starting in January.

To order an exam, complete the order form/exam se-curity agreement and pay the Bookstore a $20 nonre-fundable deposit for each exam. The total cost for each 2017 AP exam is $93, with the $73/exam balance due between March 28 and April 14. AP exams are excellent investments. While $93 may seem expensive at first, the college credits earned through the exams are free. Every year, Mountain View has graduates who enter college as sophomores – and sometimes even as juniors – by earning enough AP credits in high school. Earning qualifying scores on AP exams can save a student thousands of dollars in col-lege tuition – the equivalent of some very prestigious

scholarships. And while scholarships save dollars, AP credits save both dollars and TIME.

AP students are reminded to set money aside for exam fees. Start saving $5 per week per exam, and not only will all AP fees be covered, but also there will be enough left over for snacks for those late night study sessions.

For a number of years, students who enrolled in the free/reduced lunch program have received financial assistance from the state for the cost of their AP exams. While the 2017 policy won’t be published until late February, all AP students who qualify should immedi-ately enroll in the federal lunch program regardless of whether or not they eat lunch on campus. Apply online at mpsaz.org/food or see Ms. DeLillo in Advisement.

AP students should be researching their colleges’ spe-cific AP credit award policies. Information is available at www.collegeboard.org. Follow the links for “AP” and “Credit and Placement” and “College AP Credit Policies.”Every AP examinee must attend their assigned lunch-time Pre-Administration Session in April. Students will be notified of their assigned dates and times.

For all the latest updates and reminders, sign up for Remind.com. Text: @apfun To: 81010.

MVHS BLOOD DRIVES

Every year, Mountain View Student Council sponsors two blood drives to benefit United Blood Services. Our blood drives are the largest in the City of Mesa and one of the largest in the State of Arizona. However, for the past nine years, we have been beaten by Highland High School.

This year, we are refocusing our efforts to regain the crown. We would encourage you to participate in our blood drives by signing up or coming in. Our next large event will be March 21, 2017, in the small gym.

If you are already a regular donor or you donate through your work, church, or other organization, please tell them you are from Mountain View, and we will be credited for your donation. Let’s come together and make Mountain View the Campus of Blood Drive Champions again!
