BOOK WEEK - FIND YOUR TREASURE All at CGPS have had a wonderful week celebrating ‘Book Week’ in a variety of ways.

Starting with a brilliant performance by the Blurb’s on Monday, that included reading,

performing, dancing and singing to some of our favourite books.

We continued the fun on Tuesday with classes joining together during our literacy time to

work together on special activities linked to short listed stories.

How could we forget Wednesday. Our Book Parade was a sea of colours, characters and

books.

Congratulations to all students and families for the great costumes and creativity, while

all staff should be thanked for their amazing organisation and support.

RADIO EXPERIENCE Congratulations must go to Kohby and Ella.L for representing our school last Friday on

Phoenix FM. Both students spoke with great confidence and positive attitudes about

leadership, goals and Cal Gully PS, while experiencing what it would be like to be a radio

announcer. Thank you to John Pearce and Janine from Phoenix for their support.

MISSION At California Gully Primary School we educate students to be lifelong learners and

well informed and productive community members who are well prepared to become

active, engaged and responsible citizens of the local and global community.

NITS!! We have had recent reports of Head Lice within CGPS Community. We ask that all

parents check for Nits and treat if required. Please support the school community in

keeping these frustrating little critters to a minimum. Please don’t leave this important

check any longer. You are supporting our school community by checking for nits now. We

also encourage anyone with long hair to have it tied up at all times.

DON’T FORGET OUR PARENT OPINION SURVEY - TELL US WHAT YOU THINK! THANK YOU TO THE FAMILIES THAT HAVE ALREADY COMPLETED THE SURVEY! With only a few days to go we thank to those the have already completed the survey

although we require many more!

Don’t forget all responses to the survey are anonymous. This year the Parent Opinion

Survey will conclude this Sunday 26th August. The survey will be conducted online,

only takes 10-15 minutes to complete, and can be accessed at any convenient time within

the fieldwork period on desktop computers, laptops, tablets or smartphones. Please don’t

hesitate to contact Andrew if you have any questions or queries.

STRATEGIC PLANNING THREE KEY QUESTIONS AT THE HEART OF EFFECTIVE SELF-EVALUATION: What are we doing well at CGPS?

How can we improve CGPS?

What would you like to see occurring (Eg: specific program, activities, policy) at CGPS into

the future?

Didn’t have a chance to participate in the Parent feedback sessions or respond

to the above questions. It is not too late. If you would like to add your thoughts,

please speak with Andrew.

As you may be aware our Grade 3/4 students have participated in the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen garden for the past 4 years. Earlier this year we were successful in a grant application through the Greater City of Bendigo to be able to offer a similar program to our school community, care givers and parents. We have been lucky enough to secure the services of Michele Witham from Heathcote Primary school to run the 4-week program at our school. The program will run at California Gully Primary School kitchen and you will be able to take the food cooked and prepared home with you. Below is an outline of the program. Bring a friend or come on your own, all welcome.

FOUR SESSIONS INCLUDING RECIPES WILL COVER:

HOUSEHOLD BUDGET COOKING FROM SCRATCH STOCK YOUR PANTRY MAKE A VEGGIE BOX

These sessions will give you the tools to help improve your family’s health by getting back to basics and bringing back the joy of just sharing a meal without breaking the budget.

BOOK CLUB Book Club Issue 6 has been sent home last week. It is due back at

school Friday August 24th 2018.

If you have any questions, please see Linda Windridge or your

child’s teacher.

Forms are going home today and Jump Off day will be Friday September 14th.

Can You Help? We need volunteers to help cut the fruit for the classrooms on a Friday morning. If you can spare half hour of your time please report to the school kitchen after assembly. We are also in need of volunteers to wash and dry the fruit trays of a Friday afternoon. If you can spare fifteen minutes before collecting your children it would be appreciated.

GREAT TIPS FOR HEALTHY KIDS TIP 21 FOOT POWER WORKS Feet were made for walking, jumping, skipping, dancing and climbing. They are the body’s very own ‘wheels with a difference’. Encourage your kids to use their feet to get to places. Whether they are walking, skateboarding, or cycling., they use their feet as active transport. Even using public transport involves more physical activity than being driven everywhere. Find out how to get places by bus or train rather than driving. It will help your kids become more confident about travelling and more adventurous.

What you can do NOW Take your kids for walks and play games spotting birds and

trees, things that you only see if you are walking and not rushing by in a car.

Go skipping around the block together rather than walking.

Good Idea!

Have ‘no car days’, when everyone travels by foot, bike, bus or train. It’s good for your health, and good for the environment too.

Top Tip

Make sure your child’s shoes are comfortable and the right size.

EASY WEEKEND LUNCH IDEA ENGLISH MUFFIN PIZZAS!

Ingredients (per muffin):

1 English wholemeal muffin each,

cut in half

1 tablespoon of tomato paste

1/4 cup low-fat cheese

1/4 cup sliced pineapple (canned or fresh)

2 slices of shaved lean ham

Handful of each: mushrooms, spinach, tomato, olives, capsicum

Method:

Put pre-sliced English muffins face up on a baking tray.

Place the cookie sheet and bowls containing the other ingredients on the table where the

kids can easily reach them.

Show the kids how to spoon some tomato paste onto the muffin and

how to add the other ingredients. Then let them have fun making several mini pizzas. They might like

to make “funny faces” with the ingredients.

When they are done, put the baking tray in an oven

preheated to 180C degrees or under the grill under the

cheese turns golden brown.

HOURS CARE PROGRAM It is really important for families using OSHC to do a Centrelink Child Care Assessment now, if you have not already. You can do your assessment through myGov using your Centrelink online account. Or, through the Express Plus Centrelink mobile app. This is important, because if you don’t do your assessment, your child care fee assistance may be disrupted and/or you may have to pay full fees.

WANT TO GET RID OF YOUR PLASTIC GROCERY BAGS??? Do you have lots of plastic grocery bags taking up valuable storage space in your home? A member of our school community is collecting plastic grocery bags to make sleeping mats for the homeless. If you have excess plastic grocery bags (I’m sure many of us do) they can be brought to the school office for collection to make more sleeping mats. Not only are we providing a soft place for a homeless person to sleep—we are also recycling those unwanted plastic grocery bags!!

California Gully Primary School has signed up with the Fitzpatrick’s Home Hardware D.I.Y. Rewards program. Each time you make a purchase at Fitzpatrick’s Home Hardware please mention the school and for each $1.00 spent the school will earn five club reward points that we can use to purchase products in store when we need to make any repairs around the school.
