SCHOOL FAIR I would like to thank the school community for making the school fair held in the last

week of term 1 another successful school event! Old favourites were back including the

ever popular spinning wheel and the class run activities. Well done to the grade 5 & 6

students for organising their own games and activities, they were a great addition to the

fair. The fire engine and jumping castle were also in high demand throughout the evening.

The hamburgers from Grill’d (which we received 100% profit), nachos and ice creams were

a hit.

I would like to thank all of the parents & carers who were able to assist in the lead up to,

during and after the school fair. Assisting with prizes, preparations for the day, cooking

the BBQ, looking after activities and cleaning up at the end of the day makes for a suc-

cessful and smooth running event. The school staff did a marvellous job organising their

classroom activities and getting their students really involved in the lead up to the day.

Special thanks to Bronwyn Sheraton-Gray, Natasha Fullerton, Helen Saggars, Heather

Graham and Renee Jenkins and Mrs. Cooper for their support and work behind the scenes

in the weeks leading up to the school fair. A massive thank you to Miss Ennor for the

hours of work organising and coordinating all aspects of the school fair. Without Miss En-

nor’s passion and commitment it would be difficult to run such a successful event. The

school fair was able to raise $4,500. The money raised will be directed towards school pri-

ories including school furniture and grounds work. The support of our school community

was greatly appreciated.

PROMOTING OUR SCHOOL We are always looking at ways of promoting our school to new families. I believe one of

the most effective ways to promote the school is through you, the parents. If you know

anyone moving into our area, has a child attending your child’s pre-school or who has a

child starting Prep next year and is considering their school enrolment options, then talk

to them about our school and please invite them contact the school and set up a time for a

tour.

PREMIERS READING CHALLENGE (PRC) We encourage all children to participate in the Premiers Reading Challenge. All students are registered to complete the challenge. There are books appropriate for all ages and abilities so there is no reason why as part of the children’s daily reading they cannot enjoy the success of completing the Premiers’ Reading Challenge. Home reading is an important aspect of a child’s schooling. It increases a child’s broader knowledge of the world, teaches them good habits and organisational skills (reading each night) and provides an op-portunity for students to appreciate the experience of reading. How important is practice? Students who read: less than 1 minute a day read 8 000 words a year.

4.6 minutes a day read 282 000 words a year. 20 minutes a day read 1.8 million words a year

We can teach reading to anyone at any age BUT we cannot compensate

for a lack of practice.

ANZAC DAY SERVICE All members of our school community have been invited by the Bendigo District RSL to at-

tend the ANZAC Day Commemorative Service at Brassey Square in front of the Eagle-

hawk Town Hall on Tuesday April 25th commencing at 8.30 am.

The school will be providing a memorial wreath to be laid during

the ceremony. Students from our school will be involved in the

wreath laying ceremony.

GREAT TIPS FOR HEALTHY KIDS TIP 17. FRUITS, VEGETABLE AND LEGUMES RULE Fresh fruit is an ideal food for kids. It is colourful and naturally sweet, and most fruit comes in its own neat package, so it’s easy to pop into a lunchbox. It makes a quick, easy and nutritious snack. Like fruit, fresh vegetables, are packed with vitamins and minerals and fibre. There is a huge variety of vegetables, for example: lettuce, spinach, bok-choi, broccoli, cabbage, tomatoes, pumpkin and cucum-ber. Some can be eaten raw, others are more digestible when cooked. Legumes, include some beans and peas such as butter beans, soybeans, lentils chickpeas and mung beans. Like all plant foods, they are rich in nutrients. Al varieties of vegetables and legumes should be included in the overall eating plan - fresh, frozen, caned (no added salt) and dried.

What you can do NOW Keep offering fruits and vegetables in different ways. When you make sandwiches for kids, always add a vegetable

such as sliced tomato, mashed avocado or grated carrot. Add fresh fruit to your child’s breakfast cereal, such as sliced

banana or pear.

Good Idea!

Take your kids shopping for fruit and vegetables. Show them the c=huge variety, let them touch and smell the frit and vegetables. Talk about how they could be prepared for a meal.

Top Tip

Cook vegetables as lightly as possible to retain all their goodness. Try steaming or stir-frying in a healthy unsaturat-ed oil.

Drinks for Kids

There are many opinions regarding the best beverage choice for your child, whether

it be water, milk or 100% fruit juice. However, nutritionists across the globe all agree

that water should always be your first choice when selecting a thirst quenching drink.

Why?? There are many benefits to drinking water including:

It does not cause dental caries

It is thirst quenching

It has no energy or kilojoules and no caffeine

It prevents dehydration

It costs nothing

Dehydration is a major issue for children; they can easily become

dehydrated because they haven’t developed thirst signals. Children need to

be encouraged and reminded to drink throughout the day.

Other drinks such as cordial, soft drinks and fruit juices are high in sugar and promote dental

caries. Juice contains natural sugars that is concentrated, while soft drinks and cordials have

added sugar.

Milk should be encouraged as a healthy beverage. Choose low fat, plain milk types for strong

bones. Try dairy smoothies, e.g. banana smoothies, or milkshakes and warm milk with Milo.

WANT TO GET RID OF YOUR PLASTIC GROCERY BAGS??? Do you have lots of plastic grocery bags taking up valuable storage space in your home? A member of our school community is collecting plastic grocery bags to make sleeping mats for the homeless. If you have excess plastic grocery bags (I’m sure many of us do) they can be brought to the school office for collection to make more sleeping mats. Not only are we providing a soft place for a homeless person to sleep—we are also recycling those unwanted plastic grocery bags!!
