All principals from our region were expected to at- tend. Guest speakers came from around the world including Ontario and London. In all instances, the work they had undertaken in their regions/ districts had led to significant improvement in educational outcomes for their children. The key message from all presentations was, to deliver high impact teaching and maximise student-learning outcomes we need to connect with teachers beyond our school, ensure strong collaboration be- tween colleagues and a united sense of purpose. I look forward to sharing the strategies gleaned from the two days with the school community and building upon our already comprehensive curriculum programs. REPORTS AND CONFERENCE I trust the 3-way conference to both celebrate your child’s achievements and to look at how they can improve and grow both academically and so- cially was a worthwhile experience. I believe giving the students an op- portunity to share their progress and discuss future goals is empowering for the students and important for you the parents to be aware of. If you did not attend the 3-way conference I would ask you to organise a time to catch up with your child’s teacher at a suitable time. SCHOOL COMMUNTY GARDEN An expression of interest for those families interested in utilising a vege- table garden plot at school was sent home last week. It was pleasing to re- ceive 11 EOI back by the deadline of Monday 26 th June. A meeting will be held to discuss protocols around the sharing and use of the school commu- nity garden early in Term 3. WANT TO GET RID OF YOUR PLASTIC GROCERY BAGS??? Do you have lots of plastic grocery bags taking up valuable storage space in your home? A member of our school community is collecting plastic grocery bags to make sleeping mats for the homeless. If you have excess plastic grocery bags (I’m sure many of us do) they can be brought to the school office for collection to make more sleeping mats. Not only are we providing a soft place for a homeless person to sleep—we are also recycling those unwanted plastic grocery bags!!

California Gully Hands Up Data – June 24, 2017

It was good to see children walking and riding to school today, especially with the

colder weather. Remember you can walk part way to school if it is too far to walk all

the way.

GREAT TIPS FOR HEALTHY KIDS TIP 27. KIDS CAN LEARN TO LIKE NEW FOODS When it comes to trying out new foods, some kids are more adventurous than others. Many kids go through a stage of wanting only very specific foods, and they won’t consider anything else. For exam-ple, they may eat a particular cereal and perhaps a spread on toast, but little else. It’s more difficult to convince picky eaters to try other foods, but with gentle persistence you can ex-pand their tastes. One approach that parents commonly uses is ‘Try it, you might like it’. Kids can be surprised at how much they do like the taste of a new food. The tick is to keep offering the new food. Eventually your child will get the message that this food is being served regularly and they may as well try it.

What you can do NOW Serve new food along with foods they you know your child loves. Show an interest in foods from other cultures and foods you’ve

never tried before. Ask kids to join in cooking new foods.

Top Tip

When you introduce a new food to your child, serve it at the beginning of the meal when your child is hungry.

Top Tip

Sometimes kids will be more likely to try food in one form rather than another, such as parsnip mashed with potato rather than slices of baked parsnip. Think about the different ways you can serve up new foods.

8 Ways to get kids to eat a varied diet

1. Enjoy a variety of foods. Serve up a variety of healthy foods each day. These include fruit and vegetables, legumes (such as dried peas, beans

and lentils), wholegrain cereals, low fat dairy, lean meat, fish and skinless chicken. Low fat or skim milks are not suitable for children under two years

of age. However, for children over two years, low fat milk is recommended. 2. Shop healthy. If you haven’t got a healthy variety in your kitchen pantry or cupboard, you

can’t put it on the table. Try avoid having “sometimes” foods such as confectionary in the cupboard as children will then see them as “everyday” foods.

3. Go for quality, not quantity. Children serves may be small. It all depends on their age and appetite. Variety is the important ingredient.

4. Stick to three meals and two snacks every day. Growing children need to be fed regularly and often.

5. Begin their day with a healthy breakfast. It improves concentration, assists learning and builds stamina.

6. Give your children choices. Offer kids a few healthy choices. For instance, ask if they want an apricot or a plum, beans or broccoli, an egg or tuna sandwich.

7. Lunch boxes that go crunch. Skip the chips. Fruits and vegetables make a great snack or

lunch box addition. Try corn on the cob, carrots, small Lebanese cucumbers, green beans, cherry tomatoes, celery, stone fruit, grapes or berries.

8. Frozen fruits. Frozen fruits are great for snacks or dessert. Try frozen grapes, bananas, mango wedges or even dried fruit like sultanas.
