RESPECTFUL RESPONSIBLE LEARNERS Principal: Mrs M Crelley Issue No: 7 Term: 2 Monday 18 th May, 2020 It has been absolutely fantastic to see our students slowly return to school. Student numbers have been excellent in response to the move to Phase 1 from 11 th May as part of the managed return to full onsite face-to-face teaching. We will continue with our current onsite/at home arrangements for each year until we are directed by the Department of Education to move to the next phase which includes students returning for more days. This week we will also keep with our temporary 6 x 50 minute timetable to allow Years 11 and 12 to engage in every class every day and to provide additional breaks from computer screens. From Monday 25 th May, we will return to our ‘normal’ 5 x 60 minute period days and timetable. Students will follow their normal timetable (pre-COVID) which will assist our ability to manage growing student numbers in anticipation of the next step as determined by the Department. We will, however, be maintaining our current teaching and learning arrangements until we are directed to move to the next phase of the plan to gradually return students to school. Students are expected to attend school on the day/s allocated in the below table. Wednesdays, at this stage, will remain a day for teachers to continue to plan, provide feedback and engage with students as they participate in their learning from home. Our school is open on Wednesdays to support essential workers to undertake their jobs during this challenging time. Parents/carers will be informed as soon as any changes to our current planned operations occur. Thank you for all your efforts in assisting your children with their learning from home and for your ongoing support. As I mentioned before, it’s great to see our students again. Just a reminder - if your child is unwell and unable to engage in their learning from home please contact the school. Likewise, if you are keeping your child at home, please let the office know on 0269532122 or http://www.leeton- h.schools.nsw.edu.au. Reports Year 12 students received their mid-year reports on Friday. Students who were absent can collect their reports from the office. I congratulate Year 12 for their resilience and determination to keep moving forward despite the setbacks they’ve had this year. I look forward to seeing their progress as we gradually return to normal operations. Year 11 will receive their mid-year reports this coming Friday. Please contact the school if you would like to speak to a staff member about your child’s learning and/or wellbeing. Reports for students in Years 7-10 will be sent home at the end of this term. HSC 2020 Timetable The 2020 HSC examination timetable is now available. The written and oral exam timetables will each start a few days later than originally planned to give students more face to face time with their teachers to revise, ask questions and seek support in the lead up to exams:

Written examinations will start on 20 October and finish on 11 November. Practical examination dates will be confirmed when known. Results will be released on 18 December.

Students can access their personalised exam timetable from Students Online. NESA has adjusted personalised timetables to accommodate examination clashes, where needed. HSC students are to activate their account and check that their contact details and course enrolments are correct. Please see the attached flyer to learn more about the changes to this year’s HSC. If you have any questions, please contact the school on 0269532122. Positive Behaviour for Learning Last Friday saw our first live PBL draw on our Facebook page to acknowledge students for being respectful, responsible learners at school and at home. Teachers nominated students who have been really trying their best with their learning for our prize draw. Twenty four prizes were given out to deserving students to use at local businesses including our own canteen, the Hungry Hut.

In normal times, our PBL prize draws takes place in Weeks 3, 6 and 9 with a mega draw at the last assembly of term. We will continue to acknowledge the positive behaviours of our students and continue with our draws on Fridays of Weeks 6 and 9 and the end of term draw via our Facebook page until we return to normal operations. Congratulations to all our students for the way in which they’ve stepped up to meet the challenges of the current COVID situation.

Technology The importance of technology as a teaching and learning tool has never been more apparent. In order to continue to provide our students with the best tools, our IBM (Computer) Room has received 30 brand new desktops and new furnishing are on order to create greater, more serviceable learning spaces for classes.

Our school has also purchased a laser cutter to enhance technology and STEM classes and to provide students with an even greater tool to develop skills and creativity with their learning. Laser cutters are used for engraving, cutting and marking a variety of materials including acrylic, wood, paper, plastics and many more. Once installed, the laser cutter will be a great asset across the school.

P&C Meetings Our monthly P&C Meetings are still on hold due to current restrictions. Updates will be provided as to when we will be able to participate again in P&C meetings. If you require more information or you have questions regarding student learning, wellbeing or attendance, please contact the school on 02 6953 2122. Also, don’t forget to access our Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/LeetonHS/ which provides a current and quick way to communicate the latest information to you. Leeton High School recognises and values the importance of communication between home and school. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to call the school on 69532122. ~~DEPUTY PRINCIPAL - TEACHING & LEARNING~~

Firstly, I would like to express my appreciation and thanks to all our parents and careers in supporting our students’ health, wellbeing and learning over recent months, whilst also juggling the requirements of work and balancing the home learning environment. The support of your children’s learning from home experiences has helped sustain a sense of continuity, belonging and connection with school. The first week back under the managed gradual return to ‘normal’ schooling proved this as we witnessed pleasing attendance rates across all years.

Our High Potential and Gifted Education (HPGE) team has been and will continue to meet every three weeks throughout each term to undertake professional learning in developing our capacity to support the talent development of our high ability learners. As a team, we appreciate that this area of education is complex with a large research base and many areas to consider, which includes: differentiation, assessment, grouping, identification and higher order thinking and problem solving skills. As we develop our collective capacity to ensure that each of our students reach their educational potential, we are fortunate to draw on the valuable work undertaken by the Department’s Centre for Education Statistics and Evaluation. The organisation recently produced a report of the evidence base that supports the development and implementation of the High Potential and Gifted Education Policy (see enclosed document for a summary of the report). As an early adopter school for the Department, the work that we do at Leeton High School, will assist our students immensely, but also benefit other schools around New South Wales as they implement effective practices and programs in their pursuit of excellence in this space. To supplement the activities that we are undertaking with the HPGE team at head office in Sydney, we have recently formed a working relationship with Denise Wood, from Charles Sturt University. We sought to develop this partnership with Denise as she played a key part in the development of the new HPGE policy, whilst also having a strong focus and passion for gifted education and differentiation in rural and remote schools. Forming this partnership is aligned with our three year project with Fair Education, which strives to build capacity in our school to design and implement evidence based practices that aim to improve family and community engagement in student learning. We look forward to working with our partners to continue to make improvements to the teaching and learning landscape at Leeton High and to strengthening our relationship with our school community.
