Tax Preparation for Individuals & BusinessesAccounting Performance Solutions for the Small and Mid-Sized Business

It is hard to believe that 2014, and my first year as Mayor, has come and gone; it seems like it was just yesterday that I took the oath of office.Recently an individual asked me what I think of being the Mayor; I told him the same answer that I have told everyone throughout the year,“I Love It”. 2014 provided many wonderful opportunities; I was able to go out with the Hello Neighbor Committee to meet new residents;talk with them about the borough and answer any questions they had. Some of them jumped right in to the community and joined the TownWatch meetings. The open forum at the end of each Town Watch meeting provides residents’ the opportunity to talk with me and discuss anyconcerns. Residents are assured that these concerns will be on the agenda and brought up for discussion at the next scheduled Council meeting. The first week in October saw Benner Memorial Hall playing host to the Bucks County Commissioners for their monthly meeting. I was given

the opportunity to welcome the Commissioners, their staff, and the local press; I used my allotted time to share the history of the borough andlisted the many successful businesses within our boundaries. As 2014 was coming to a close I was privileged to announce a new initiative torecognize individuals and their positive contributions to the community. I selected three individuals to be Official Tree Lighters for the borough’sannual tree lighting ceremony. As I begin my second year in office I look back at all we were able to accomplish in 2014 and the long list of items I would like to address

in 2015. The first item I want to address is to visit every home in the borough and meet the many faces of Richlandtown. While it is true thatI know quite a lot of people in the borough there are even more that I don’t know and I want to change that. The second item will be a projectundertaken by the Mayor’s committee. I have been approached many times during the past year by parents voicing concern about the lack ofactivities for the younger residents of the borough. I am excited to announce that this year there are several fun events in the planning stagesthat are geared towards the younger age group. The third area I will be continuing to focus on is increasing the amount of volunteers in theborough. Although there was a minimal increase last year the amount of volunteer help needs to improve. If we as a community expect toincrease our quality of life with beautiful parks and safe streets AND want to keep our taxes reasonable it is imperative that we all step forwardand say these simple words: “how can I help?”

Just like I ended the summer edition of the Boro Buzz I am including my email address. If there are any concerns you may have about theBorough or questions about the information I listed above, please feel free to contact me via [email protected], Mayor James Dunn Jr.

We all have one, that fact is biologically indisputable. Mothers are the driving force behind who we are because of what they dofor us and who we have become because of what they make us do for ourselves. Motherhood is not something for the weak, motherswipe our noses and bandage scraped knees; they are strong enough to say what we need to hear instead of what we want to hear;mothers stand next to you when everyone else has turned away, that’s what a mother does. While some may describe that as sacrificemothers’ tend to see it as another entry in their continually evolving jobdescription; children don’t come with instructions, the manual formotherhood is created and honed every single day based on the challenges wepresent to them. I have some pretty awesome Mothers in my family; my sisters have raised

boys that have grown and morphed into amazing adults and are startingfamilies of their own. What about my Mom? Well, I like to think that myMom is Wonder Woman; she is always there when I need her and moreimportantly she is there when I think I don’t need anybody. You can see herin action as she works by my side collecting leaves throughout the boroughor at the park helping to pull weeds or distributing flyers announcingborough events. Why does she do this? Because she can, there isn’t anythingshe can’t do. I’m pretty sure there is a red cape hiding in her closet somewherebut I don’t need to see it to know how fantastic she is.Please be sure to make the time to let the Mothers’ in your life know just

how much they mean to you.

Hello Neighbor

A Tribute to Mothers By Dani McClanahan

Hello Neighbor!! A greeting that some newcomers to the borough heard this past year. 2015 begins the secondyear of the innovative Hello Neighbor program and our goal is to make sure that everyone moving into the boroughis personally welcomed and given a gift bag filled with offerings from local businesses. During the first year manybusinesses within the borough and the surrounding areas contributed a variety of items for the bags; the intent is

to let newcomers know where key services can be found in and around the borough. One of theglitches we had during our first year was locating those who rent homes and apartments so we areseeking your help with this matter. If you are aware of any new residents that have moved inaround you, please contact Lisa Dunn at [email protected]. If you are a business in the areaand would like to contribute to the welcome package, please contact us at the email listed above.

Patience and understanding by all residents and the general public goes a long way in making snow removal in Richlandtown Borougha successful undertaking. Ordinance 259: In order to combat the hazards of snow and ice and to facilitate the movement of traffic, Borough Council has

determined that it is in the best interest of the health, safety and welfare of the residents of Richlandtown Borough to prohibit parkingon all borough streets during winter storms. Winter Storm is defined as precipitation in the form of sleet, ice, freezing rain or snow orthe combination thereof, creating the need for snow or ice removal, salting or cindering operation. During any winter storm (see definition above) it is a violation to leave any unattended vehicle on any street within the borough. This

prohibition of parking remains in effect for a period of 12 hours after the snow or ice has accumulated (12 hours after the snow or ice hasstopped falling). What this means: Basically, if we are expecting snow, sleet, freezing rain or any other type of mayhem to fall from the sky DO

NOT PARK ON THE STREET! SNOW EMERGENCY: IF the Mayor of Richlandtown has determined the existence of a winter storm emergency within the

borough a Snow Emergency will be declared. This snow emergency is presumed to continue for a period of 24 hours following theaccumulation of snow. A snow emergency DOES NOT have to be declared for the parking ban to be in effect.

Thank You To The BusinessesRichlandtown Borough would like to thank thebusinesses that appear in this newsletter and torecognize them each as supporters and cornerstonesof our community. For it is with their contributionsthat this newsletter has been produced at no charge toour residents. Richlandtown Borough would like tofurther request that citizens, in response, patronizethese businesses first when given a choice as thesebusinesses are saving each citizen tax dollars.

ARE YOU LOOKING FOR A WAY TO HELP OUT THE BOROUGH?Then we are looking for you. Regardless of skill or age there is

usually some project or undertaking that anybody can lend a handto. Throughout the past several years volunteerism within theborough has steadily diminished. Last year we noted an increase, asmall increase but an increase nonetheless; a glimmer of hope that aforce of volunteers with a can do attitude could be rebuilt. You knowthe saying “Many hands make light work”, I’m here to tell you thatis fact. We currently have a great group of volunteers that have beenfaithful throughout the years and continue to materialize wheneverhelp is needed.

WHAT DO WE NEED VOLUNTEERS FOR?Here is a list of borough sponsored events that are run by volunteers:

Community Day, Tree Lighting Ceremony, Scarecrow Festival(expected to make a triumphant return in 2015), bingo, craft showand flea market fundraisers. We are also looking for individuals tohelp as ‘openers and closers’ for events at Benner Hall. Basicallyunlock the facility and turn on lights for parties that have reserved thespace. At the end of their event, come back and lock up. Details andinstruction provided, it is a pretty simple task but an important one.

ENJOY THE OUTDOORS? HAVE A GREEN THUMB?Opportunities are almost endless for those that like to work outside:

Cleanup and maintenance of borough flower beds; planting annualsand maintaining perennials. Mowing and maintaining borough parksand public spaces; anybody that has a desire to help with mowing ortrimming or both is urged to step forward. Please note that you mustbe 18 years old to operate equipment. The Parks and Recreationcommittee is really looking for support from the borough residents toplan and execute events that will bring some fun back to the borough.

While growing up, helping our community was something we justdid; we didn’t have to be asked. There has been a noticeable shift inyounger generations and their desire or willingness to be acontributing member of their community seems to be not as essentialas it was for my generation. The above opportunities are shiningexamples of the importance of volunteerism and what it means tobelong to a community. If you are interested in becoming a volunteerfor the borough please contact me through the borough web site oremail me at [email protected].

I hope to hear from you soon!

SNOW

HOW CAN YOU HELP?It is important to understand that it is YOUR responsibility to ensure your vehicle is removed from the street PRIOR to the

arrival of any winter weather event. Remember there is off street parking available behind the fire house at 125 South Main St.and at Benner Hall.Winter road maintenance is expensive, dangerous and time consuming. Here are a few suggestions to help not only yourself,

but the Department of Public Works as well:

• If the storm is to startsometime overnight moveyour vehicle to your off streetparking location BEFORE you go to bed

• Do NOT shovel, plow, orblow snow from yourproperty into the roadway, itcould refreeze making itdangerous for other drivers.

• Remove portable basketballnets from streets andsidewalks.

• Do NOT place trash cans in the street.• Do NOT park vehicles on the street until the street hasbeen completely cleared off. If there is a snow fall andresidents have a vehicle parked on the roadway, pleasemove it immediately.

• Do NOTwait until you see/hear the plow coming before

you go out to clean off or move your vehicle, get it out ofthe way before the plow comes through.

• Do NOT permit children to play in and around the edgeof the road. Snow forts and tunnels carved in the snowbanks are strongly discouraged.

• If possible wait until the street is plowed curb to curbbefore clearing driveway openings.

• Shovel out fire hydrants located near your property.Doing so will help the Fire Department in case there is aneed to locate and operate the hydrant.

• Clean around catch basin grates, this will help removethe runoff from the snow-melt and prevent ponding (andpotential freezing) of water in the street.

• Motorists need to have a greater awareness ofBorough vehicles salting and plowing snow. Motoristsshould not interfere, approach, flag down or impede theplow in any way.

• Be patient. All roads will be cleared as soon as possible.

Snow should be shoveled or plowed to the right side of the drivewayas you are facing the intersecting roadway. (See diagram right). Bypiling snow away from the oncoming direction of the snow plows, thesnow will not be pushed back onto your driveway

• Eliminate snow piles at the property entrance wheneverpossible. High accumulations of snow can obstruct the visionof motorists, posing a safety hazard.

• Do not push snow onto roadways at any time. This createshazardous conditions for all vehicles.

BENNER MEMORIAL PARKThe Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources’ (DCNR) Bureau of Recreation and

Conservation 2015 grant program for public recreation and conservation projects opens on Wednesday,January 14, 2015 and ends on Thursday, April 16, 2015. What does this mean? Applying for and being awarded grant monies would allow the borough the

opportunity to install additional improvements at the park. So the next question is: What would YOU like tosee as the next addition to the park? It could be the addition of a single piece of equipment or maybe a series offitness stations; perhaps a dog park or community garden, the choices are almost endless. Borough Council wants you to think about what would be an ideal addition to the park and then join us

Monday, January 26th, 2015, 7:00 pm at Benner Hall for a public meeting. During this meeting thoughts andideas can be exchanged and together we can plan the future of our park.See You There!
