PNDS @ Work: Staff Nurse
DevelopmentSusan V. M. Kleinbeck
2005, 64 pages$15 member/$19 nonmember softcover
This is one of the books in a fivebook series that describes how thePerioperative Nursing Data Set(PNDS) vocabulary can be adapted foruse in any facility and in everydayperioperative nursing practice. Thebook includes a brief introduction ofthe PNDS as a universal vocabularyrelating specifically to all phases ofperioperative nursing practice frompreadmission to discharge. The wide-spread use of this language in periop-erative settings could improve theoverall delivery of care and provideadditional standardization for theeducation of perioperative practition-ers. The book includes examples ofhow to use the PNDS as a guide todelivery of care and emphasizes thatnurses do not have to implement allof the PNDS outcomes and interven-tions in order to provide quality carefor every patient. Nurses must useclinical judgment regarding a patient’sindividual needs.
Perioperative nurse educators arethe target audience of this book. Thebook emphasizes that to be an effec-tive teacher, it is important to beaware of the different adult learningstyles and assess individual studentneeds. The three learning styles dis-cussed are visual, auditory, and kines-thetic. Examples of each style are re-viewed and a resource tool for alearning style self-assessment isoffered. The author covers five stepsfor designing a staff development
program, including • educate the educator,• develop a strategic plan for staff
member development,• develop preceptors as clinical
experts,• plan an educational
program, and • evaluate response to
the program.Incorporation of the
PNDS should be thefoundation for perioper-ative professionaldevelopment pro-grams. This how-toguide is an asset tounderstanding thePNDS and incorporating the PNDSvocabulary into the perioperative nurs-ing arena.
