Kleinbeck 2005, 64 pages $15 member/$19 nonmember softcover This is one of the books in a five book series that describes how the Perioperative Nursing Data Set (PNDS) vocabulary can be adapted for use in any facility and in everyday perioperative nursing practice. The book includes a brief introduction of the PNDS as a universal vocabulary relating specifically to all phases of perioperative nursing practice from preadmission to discharge. The wide- spread use of this language in periop- erative settings could improve the overall delivery of care and provide additional standardization for the education of perioperative practition- ers. The book includes examples of how to use the PNDS as a guide to delivery of care and emphasizes that nurses do not have to implement all of the PNDS outcomes and interven- tions in order to provide quality care for every patient. Nurses must use clinical judgment regarding a patient’s individual needs. Perioperative nurse educators are the target audience of this book. The book emphasizes that to be an effec- tive teacher, it is important to be aware of the different adult learning styles and assess individual student needs. The three learning styles dis- cussed are visual, auditory, and kines- thetic. Examples of each style are re- viewed and a resource tool for a learning style self-assessment is offered. The author covers five steps for designing a staff development program, including educate the educator, develop a strategic plan for staff member development, develop preceptors as clinical experts, plan an educational program, and evaluate response to the program. Incorporation of the PNDS should be the foundation for perioper- ative professional development pro- grams. This how-to guide is an asset to understanding the PNDS and incorporating the PNDS vocabulary into the perioperative nurs- ing arena.
