PMI Vancouver Island is a professional family of friends who care about each other and care about furthering the profession of project management in our region and it has been my privilege to serve as President this past year.

We are better together!-Amber

" When you join PMI, you become a part of a community of over 500,000 project professionals in over 185 countries." - PMI Global

And when you join the local chapter of PMI-Vancouver Island you leverage that global connection to make sense of it in your own backyard. Chapters represent the heart of PMI membership and allow us to connect with others locally to share ideas and initiatives.

Thank you to the Delta Ocean Point for becoming our partner, providing both the space and professional environment to host excellent events befitting of our members.

Thank you also to Proteon, our new digital partner helping us to digitally transform our own organization with a new website, communication tools and automation with PMI Global. Thank you to our streaming company, Lumera for ensuring our Up-island and Yukon members can share in our events.

Thank you to our new partner Reboot, for taking our PD Conference to a new level, increasing our delegate numbers and professional speakers, and surpassing our expectations.

Thank you also to our members who have populated our events and shared their successes and their accomplishments this past year.

Congratulations to all of our new credential holders; we salute your efforts and welcome you into our network of aspiring professionals; may iron sharpen iron as we work together to advance our collective knowledge.

I especially want to thank our Board who inspire me everyday to do better, think wider and share more of myself in benefit to us all. I have learned more professionally, in this last year than I have in the past 10 years.

Finally, thank you to our tireless volunteers who make running the chapter seem effortless. I am indebted to all of those who sacrifice their time and their talent to serve us. Without these dedicate members, none of this would be possible.

I had the opportunity to volunteer as the Treasurer of the Chapter for the past 2 years. It has been an enjoyable journey working with a board and support resources composed of so many hard-working professionals. This chapter would not be what it is today were it not for the numerous professionals who dedicate their precious time to support the education and training of project management on the island.

Kudos to all the volunteers! Unfortunately for now I must step down as Treasurer but am committing to continuing my involvement as a Chapter volunteer in support roles. Call me up for photography or to support the on-boarding Treasurer or any other task required and I’ll be there! -Jaz

Each year the Chapter’s Board of Directors meets during the month of June to provide orientation for recently elected Board members and transition for those changing portfolios.

This is a full day of team building, strategic planning, addressing requirements and assumptions, and training on the prescribed communication and reporting methods being G-Suite.

Like any good project management professionals we know that our success of our Chapter rests on the planning work that goes into each one of our initiative’s events.

All board members and executive that you’ve elected donate their time to this important series of events.

My experience volunteering with PMI-VI helped me grow as a person and as a leader. It helped me practice servant leadership. This board has been extremely supportive to all the volunteers during their personal times of difficulty - no blame philosophy - get the job done!

tFor me, an introvert and a sworn pessimist at heart, working with PMIVI Board right from the beginning was a cultural shock. To my big surprise all people I got to meet and work with, were overly optimistic, upbeat and energized.

Inexplicably and seemingly without any selfish reason or purpose they were also willing to share their knowledge and experience and what was even more surprising, they actually listened intently to what I had to say however naive it seemed to sound to me.

Thank you my friends for changing my outlook on 'usually suspected' Board Work into something unexpectedly refreshing and exiting. We hope to make this formula super contagious and to spread it to our members as quickly as we can.

-Slav

It has been an honour to be a part of the PMI-VI board as the Certifications Director. In this role I have had the enriching opportunity to work with an inspiring dedicated board and a team of CEPS facilitators and program support volunteers that tirelessly commit their time and experience to teaching PMBOK curriculum to aspiring PMPs. The generosity of your dedication to the CEPS program is so greatly appreciated.

I am also grateful to have had the opportunity to play a role in facilitating the successful passing by CEPS students - of what we know as the gruelling PMP/PMI exam(s) - and would like to extend my well wishes to all past and future CEPS students as they move forward in their careers. -Sue

I wanted to let you know that I successfully passed the PMP exam on Saturday. Please pass my thanks to the instructors of the CEPS course for teaching, sharing their tips, and support.

When Ivan Rincon became the PMIef Liaison in 2016 it was ground-breaking work. Over the last three years, he delivered project management to diverse venues such as elementary school classrooms, non-profit leadership programs, and support programs for new immigrants and refugees.

In 2018-2019, through the PMIef Liaison the Chapter has been able to:1. Award a scholarship to a high-school student who proved the

value of project management in her journey to higher education. This initiative was featured by PMIef global.

2. Engage teachers from Island Catholic Schools to provide them with project management tools for the classroom.

3. Support the Victoria Immigrant and Refugee Centre Society (VIRCS), providing career advice and training in project management to new immigrants and refuges in the Victoria area.

PMIef is the philanthropic arm of PMI Global. Its mission is, “to inspire and empower people to realize their potential and transform their lives and their communities through the use of project management knowledge.”

This means bringing project management to non-traditional settings that rely on projects but typically do not have project management staff.

The PMI-VI Chapter helped me get to know a new community of project managers when I moved to Vancouver Island, so I was happy to give back to the Chapter and its members by joining the Board. It was inspiring to work with a group of dedicated, enthusiastic, and talented individuals who are passionate about the growth and integrity of the project management profession. -Amanda

Having been an executive member of UNICEF SFU, Phi Delta Epsilon Medical Fraternity, and SFU Student Health Advisory Committee, Monique gained experience leading teams, managing budgets, and ideating solutions.

Upon learning about the PMI Education Foundation, Monique was excited by the opportunity to work with youth and marginalized populations through sharing knowledge and cultivating project management skills.

Monique Sekhon recently completed her studies in Population Health at Simon Fraser University and now works as a Project Management Advisor at the Ministry of Health.

All of this work has been more than fulfilling, and embraces the concept of giving back to the community.

As I finish my appointment as PMIef Liaison, and pass the torch to a new generation of community engaged project managers, I would like to thank all Chapter members for their support.
