Three main types of performance are featured (not forgetting a lovely early Kenyan big band calypso, as if straight from the pen of Lord Kitchener). Most are minstrelsy, with songs ranging dazzlingly through subjects including loneliness and death, bastards and cut off trousers, trains of fire and no good rich people, a murder mystery and a drunken punch up at a rumba party in Kampala. There is also taarab music from the Swahili speaking communities of the east coast, and Arab and Indian communities in ports like Mombasa, which had imported Egyptian and Indian music since almost the start of the century. Lilting melodies are provided by violins or Indian harmoniums, sometimes also an oud, along with Indian or Arab percussion. Finally there is the startling sound of four larger Ugandan ensembles, with songs about getting drunk and the relative merits of prostitution and motherhood, and the king’s deportation by the British, deploying ‘the man who crunches rocks between his teeth’. The style dismayed the missionary Robert Ashe, who visited the court of the Kabaka in 1884: ‘Our ears were deafened with the din which a motley band of musicians were making. Kettledrums and hand drums were rolling, horns braying, flutes screaming… while blind musicians twanged away on their banjos, the whole making a most discordant harmony.’ Luxuriously presented, like a small hard cover book, with full notes, including extensive translation, and haunting photographs; with the recordings brilliantly restored at Abbey Road. Foster Manganyi Ndzi Teke Riendzo

HJRCD108 4047179554626 CD HONEST JON'S RECORDS £7.99 WORLD

Foster Manganyi is a pastor living outside Johannesburg. His sublime music shares with our compilation Shangaan Electro (HJRCD/LP52), a startling palette of sampled, synthesized sounds — the signature whistle and marimba, no bass, a little wonky high-life — and rough, fast, skittering drum patterns. Yet these are gospel songs, intensely sincere, brimming with aching, plaintive, mournful spirituality, without a trace of R&B, mangled or not; and however fractured, multi-faceted and fresh the music comes across, the surging lines and harmonies of the support singers are unmistakably rooted in the traditional vocal music of South Africa.

This is the reissue of a hit cassette from 2008.

Ndzi Teke Riendzo (I'm Taking A Journey) / Amen-Amen / Tintsumi (The Angels) / Misava Ya Fova (The World Is Dying) / Hi Tirhela Tilo (Working For The Lord) / Moya Wanga (My Spirit) / Fambani / Zion / Ndzi To Tivisela (I Will Keep On Praying) / Vanhu Va Lova (People Are Dying) Also available: 2LP Vinyl - HJRLP108 £8.99

The Savings And Loan Today I Need Light SBTRA010 5052442000655 CD SONG BY TOAD RECORDS £6.99 ROCK/POP The Savings and Loan is a band from Scotland. Their core comprises singer-songwriterMartin Donnelly and multi-instrumentalist Andrew Bush. Today I Need Light is their debut album. Chequered veterans of the Glasgow underground scene (with Eska, De Rosa and The Sky At Night, among others), the duo formed in 2004, although Donnelly has since decamped to Edinburgh in a bid to unite both factions in the under-reported East Coast-West Coast melancholia wars. Their songs, however, remain resolutely Glaswegian, touched as they are by that city's twin obsessions of drink and religion. Indeed, these themes are reflected not only in the album's content, but also in the manner of its creation; the latter in the working title – Hymns Old and New – and the former by the fact that it’s been six long years in the making. In parallel with the crafting of this album at Bush's home and studio, and the eponymous self-released EP that preceded it (given as a bonus download with the first 500 copies of the record), Donnelly has published two volumes of poetry: Paler Aye,a daily haiku journal, and Temporary Poems, a roundup of other miscellany. He has also contributed to the seminal New Writing Scotland anthology, and has read by invitation at popular writers' evening Discombobulate. Tracks: Swallows / Lit Out / The Virgin's Lullaby / Catholic Boys in the Rain / Pale Water / The Star of the County Down / Met (a Storm) / Her Window / A Pleasing Companion

The Outside Track Curious Things Given Wings LORRCD02 884502311396 CD COPPERPLATE £7.99 FOLK A stunning synthesis of virtuosity and energy, The Outside Track’s marraige of Canadian, Scottish and Irish music has been rapturously received around the world. Hailing from Scotland, Ireland and Cape Breton and Vancover, its five members are united by a love of traditional music and a commitment to creating new music on its foundation. Using fiddle, accordion, harp, guitar, flute, step-dance and vocals, these five virtuosos blend boundless energy with unmistakable joie de vivre. Each player within The Outside Track is a master of their chosen instrument with the band stacking up an impressive amount of international awards. This amount of talent alone would be enough to recommend the band but in this case the end result is so much greater than the sum of the parts. The band have enjoyed 5 years of extensive touring in the UK, Europe, Canada and the USA, including appearances at Celtic Connections, Celtic Colours, Goderich, Mission, Memoire et Racines, Sidmouth, and Whitby Festivals. “Wow and Wow again! This is the best new group we have heard in quite a while”Tradition in Review Of course, the finest folk group can only exist with the finest ingredients. And in Rig the Jig, Irish and American folk songs find the captivating, story-telling voice of Michael Banahan, the lilting vocals and the passionate fiddle playing of Aoife Kelly and the beautifully ornate performances of Patricia Lane. There's a sprinkling of magic in Noel Carberry's ethereal whistle playing and in the haunting sounds of the Uilleann pipes. The sweet and jaunty melodies from Brendan Emmet's mandolin complement the pulsating rhythm of Anthony McDermott's guitars. All of that energy, coupled with Ian Kinsella's mastery of the banjo and guitar, the fluid, exciting style of Paul Gurney on bass guitar and keyboards, makes Rig the Jig a force to be reckoned with on the international music scene. Make no mistake; this band has earned its many accolades. Over the years its members have turned their attentions to a carefully chosen blend of rousing ballads, respecting tradition while embracing modernity in song and melody. It is truly a melting pot, bubbling over with eight unique expressions of talent. Through their music, Irish culture meets the dust roads and small town history of America's folk song tradition. And it's all harnessed together with Rig the Jig's inimitable, timeless style. It s the reason they have retained their earliest fans while welcoming thousands of entranced followers during their many sell-out tours of Ireland, Europe, the USA and Asia. If Irish folk music had a dictionary, this is one band that would certainly have entered the lexicon as a byword for flawless performances glittering with raw energy. Tracks: The Turkish Revery / Le Voyage / Silvy Silvy / Swerving For Bunnies / The Jubilant Goat / Caroline Of Edinburgh Town / Belladrum Outhouse / Malcolm's New Fiddle / Blackbird's & Thrushes / Madam, Madam / Panic! / Farewell Song

Peter McAlinden with Pete Quinn Happy to Meet, Sorry to Part PMC001 5070000031101 CD COPPERPLATE £7.99 FOLK One of London’s musical treasures, Peter has devoted his life to teaching, and got himself lost in academia for the past 30 years. But last year the fates conspired to return him to his first love Irish traditional music! The death of his mother and his mentor co-incided with an invite from internationally known accordionist, Karen Tweed to perform at last year’s Camden Town festival, rekindle Peter’s dormant musical muse. The concert was a great success and spurred on by entreaties from fellow musicians Peter’s thoughts turned to recording a CD. Aided by Pete Quinn, on piano and keyboards on loan from The London Lasses, they have produced this masterpiece. In the hands of a master musician like Peter the humble tin whistle becomes a magical instrument which can deliver all the emotions within any tune. It should also be noted Peter is also a brilliant pianist and flute player. We feel sure anybody who hear Peter’s music will be bowled over his mastery of his chosen instrument and the musicality of his music. Hopefully with this CD, many more people will come to know and love the music of Peter McAlinden. have transcended the sum of their parts to become an entity with a life force of its own.
