    ROWBOAT

Make it for $35 from one piece of plywood

THIS 11-foot hull will cost you only $35

to build and comes out of a single sheetof %-inch plywood. We used WeldwoodRoyal Marine Plywood for the job. It canbe put together by almost any workshopperwith a minimum amount of tools and time.

It rows smartly and gets a real burst ofspeed from a 3 to 5-hp outboard, actuallyplaning like a runabout. It won't tip or tripwith its generously flared sides and willtake a rough clop. It can be lifted on topof a car by one man. It will carry up tofour persons. The editors feel that it's im

possible to get so much water transport

anywhere for so little cost.In cutting and assembly, you deal directly with the planking, first and last. Except for the transom, no other ribs areused- No precision jigging, alignments, plumbs, squares, angles, rakes, deadrise, coordinates, lofting or full-size layout isnecessary. It can be done in a weekend, orif you prefer to work leisurely, two weekends.

In addition to the materials mentioned, tools required or helpful are as follows:

a rip saw or saber, plane, ratchet screw

driver, Stanley's Surform (extremelyhandy for planing jobs), an electric drillwith Screwmate.

The author tested the boat on LongIsland Sound, using a 3-hp EvinrudeLightwin and a 5-hp Evinrude Fisherman. With the 5 attached, the boat climbed rightout on a plane and clocked 17 mph withtwo persons aboard! With the Fishermanat full bore, the, bow was rammed throughevery large wake available; it either partedthrough or planed right across the ridge of

each. As a small scale runabout, this is a

superb boat; it handles easily and offersreal boating thrills, yet isn't overly muchfor even a child to handle. It makes a dandysecond boat for every member of the familyto enjoy.

When finishing, seal all plywood withFirzite or other filler and varnish orenamel to suit. Before beginning, studythe drawings carefully, then study theste p-by-s tep photographs. It's a simpleboat to construct. And it'll offer a su mmer full of fun. Why not begin now?
