Melinda, Stylist at Redhead Salon

Hi, I’m Melinda and I am a stylist at Redhead Salon. I have been in the salon industry as a nail technician since 1996. I fell in love with the beauty industry and always wanted to do hair. I decided to further my career and attended the Aveda Institute of South Florida for Cosmetology. After gradu-ating, I started training with the amazing team of Master Stylists at Redhead Salon. As fashion, hair styles and hair color change constantly. Education is very important to me, so I constantly attend classes to keep updated on the newest trends. I love making people feel and look their best! If you are looking for a great haircut or color, book a complimentary consultation with me. I look forward to meeting you and giving you a great new look!

publiSher'S pAge

Summer is the time to relax and unwind; reju-venate from the constant chaos of our daily lives. Although we still have a few weeks left of the “lazy days

of summer,” we’ll be back-to-school before we know it. It seems like the stores started

stocking school supplies within minutes of pulling the leftover July 4th sparklers off the shelves.

As we work through the school supply lists, buy new school clothes and get the school physicals done, our kids will soon realize that their summer school vacation is quickly coming to an end. They are starting to look forward to seeing their school friends again. On rare occasions, we might even catch them picking up a book on their own.

Before we know it, we will be getting back to our school-time routine with early morning carpool, after-school activities and evening sports practices. But, before that first day of school arrives, let’s enjoy the final days of summer break with our loved ones. Enjoy the beaches, the backyard pool, or a simple BBQ with friends, because soon enough we’ll be back-to-school, again!

Sincerely, Sven BudzischPublisher/Owner

Nearly three dozen Plantation kids are enjoying their sum-mer riding shiny brand new bicycles, courtesy of their own hard work and an on-going community project. The students from Peters Elementary

and Plantation Elementary schools were awarded new bikes, helmets and bike locks during a ceremony just before the end of the school year to reward them for their scholarship and determination. The B.I.K.E Program is administered through the Plantation Police Department and funded the past seven years by the GFWC Plantation Woman’s Club. Club President Pat Hinde, Community Improvement Project Chair Barbara Graveson and past CIP chair Gloria Merritt presented the bikes, helmets and locks on behalf of the club. “We sponsor the BIKE program to encourage bicycle safety and responsibility as well as good citizenship and grades,” said Helen Ackerman, a spokeswoman for the Woman’s Club.

According to Ackerman, the club spent approximately $4,000 on the new bike equipment. Now in its tenth year, B.I.K.E. or “Be Intelligent Kind Enthusiastic,” is

designed to reward fourth-grade students for their overall citizenship and grades. The program was originally brought to Plantation Elementary School by Captain Dominick Ranieri of the Plantation Police Department, after his daughter was the recipient of a B.I.K.E. award in Palm Beach. A year later, they expanded it to include Peters Elementary School.

The program has been a mainstay since then for the schools who want to participate while under the direc-tion of the Plantation Police Department. According to Capt. Ranieri, one of the requirements is that students sign a contract with the department stating that they will fol-low the rules and earn good grades and be on their best behavior.

Beyond that, the program is judged by

report card grades and conduct. Students earn points for A’s, B’s and C’s, points are taken away for D’s and F’s. Points are also awarded for conduct. Students who earn 1500 points at the end of two making periods earn a new bicycle, helmet and a lock. Since B.I.K.E. came to Plantation, they are have awarded 297 bicycles, helmets and locks and had 1211 students sign contracts.

Before they head back to school, families brought together thanks to a local non-profit organization will celebrate with a fun day in the summer sun. The annual Back to School Picnic, hosted by JAFCO or Jewish

Adoption and Foster Care Options, will be held August 14 and organizers say it is one of their most eagerly awaited events. “It is always a nice, fun day that people look forward to,” said Rebecca Solomon, Associate Director of Development for JAFCO.

As many as 150 parents and kids are expected to turn out for the event, which is held every summer at the JAFCO Village for all of their foster and adoptive fami-lies, as well as participants in their other programs. Guests enjoy barbecue, frozen Italian ice, slides, bounce houses, a pool, DJ, pony rides, motorcycle rides and face painting.

In the weeks leading up to the picnic, JAFCO will also be collecting school supplies for the children to choose from to help fill up their backpacks for the new school year. “We set up the supplies almost as a store in our community room and our families can go through and select what they need for the year,” said Solomon.

JAFCO is a non-profit organization established in 1992 to provide services to abused and neglected children in South Florida. They provide a host of programs and services for at-risk children and their families including a children’s emer-gency shelter, group home program, foster care and adoption, family preservation program and more.

The children need a variety of items to help them get back to the books. The most needed items include calendars, homework planners, backpacks, scientific calculators, dividers, writing supplies (mechanical pencils, pens, markers) fold-

ers, loose leaf paper, both college and wide ruled, poster-sized paper, computer paper, boxes of crayons, rulers, ballpoint pens, colored pencils, staplers and staples and composition notebooks.

If you would like to donate school supplies for JAFCO’s Back to School Picnic, contact Jodi Farbish at 954-749-7230 x108 or [email protected]

W ith a Parade, family fun, great food and fireworks, Plantation residents helped cel-ebrate our nation’s 237th birthday. The City’s

2013 Independence Day Celebration, called “60 Years of Celebrating Our Nation Together”, kicked of July 4th with a parade that rolled out from the intersection of Broward Boulevard and N.W. 46th Avenue. Presented by the Rick Case Automotive Group and the City of Plantation, the parade drew thousands of residents who lined the parade route and cheered on family, friends, City leaders, local civic groups and local businesses that took part in the parade, which ended at City Hall.

The fun continued later in the evening at Central Park with a free Children’s Carnival in honor of the City’s ongo-ing 60th anniversary celebration, a concert featuring the Viva Classic Rock & Roll Band and fireworks presented by Zambelli Internationale.

For the first time in nearly four decades, Temple Kol Ami Emanu-El is welcoming a new senior spiritual leader.

Rabbi Howard Needleman officially assumed the post at the Plantation Synagogue in July and led the congregation through his first Shabbat service July 12. It was the first step in what promises to be a busy year for the Rabbi. “My agenda right now is to prepare for the year, build relation-ships with people and to create an engaging worship environment, as well as a shared vision for the year with the community,’” Rabbi Needleman said.

Rabbi Needleman comes to South Florida from Temple Beth David in Commack, New York, Rabbi Needleman said he was drawn to South Florida not only as a fantastic place to raise his family, but by a congregation with a rich history that had a strong vision for the future. “It was a natural fit,’ he said. “I found

a dedicated leadership and a great part-nership in the senior staff throughout the Synagogue.”

Rabbi Needleman said he hopes to inspire a love of Judaism in others by creat-ing a modern house of worship where people feel connected. He and temple lead-ers bill it as a “new beginning” in keeping with today’s times. “Part of my vision is

to create a modern reform temple that is both engaged in how we are within the Synagogue walls, with our worship, our learning and outreach to all that seek to make Kol Ami Emanu-El their spiritual home,” he said.

To that end, Rabbi Needleman said the Synagogue will put a priority on mak-ing its spirituality and programming interactive for all generations, including the use of technology and social media to keep everyone connected. In order to cre-ate a “virtual relationship with the congregation before arriving in South Florida, the Rabbi created a blog so congregants could get to know him. The Rabbi also hopes to work within the broader community through Social Action and “Tikkun Olam” or projects that repair the world.

Temple Kol Ami Emanu-El began the search for a new spiritual leader follow-ing the retirement of longtime senior Rabbi Sheldon Harr, who now serves as the

“Founding Senior Rabbi Emeritus.” Before selecting a new Rabbi, temple leaders held a series of focus groups to learn what congregants wanted in a new leader.

“Our Temple Family wanted a Rabbi who would connect with them and help them with their issues and Jewish spirituality as well as help our young parents to teach their children how to live with a Jewish perspective in today’s world. Rabbi Needleman was by far the leader in fulfilling that role. He is young, progressive and has the right combination of compassion, intellect, vision and spirituality to lead our Temple,” said Calvin Helitzer, the Temple Kol Ami Emanu-El President.

When not working, Rabbi Needleman enjoys spending time with wife Beth and children Noah, 12, and Abby, 8. Look for him around South Florida riding his Harley Davidson motorcycle or playing in a competitive game of Ultimate Frisbee.

Visit Rabbi Needleman’s Facebook page at Rabbi Howard Needleman, or his blog at www.rabbineedleman.com. A formal installation and gala is planned for November 1 and 2. For more information, phone 954-472-1988 or visit online at http://www.tkae.org/

While many middle school students are getting ready to do their own back-to-school shopping, Tiernan Ramer is thinking about shoes. But the 12-year old Plantation girl isn’t thinking about her own

feet; she’s collected more than 200 pairs of shoes to donate to disadvantaged kids in the community. “My friends say they have a shoe problem when they can’t stop buying them,” Tiernan said, “but some people have real shoes problems because they don’t have any.”

So Tiernan and her mother, Colleen Ramer, started a shoe drive a few months ago to help make sure kids in Broward don’t have to go without shoes. Inspired by a contest from the Mattel Toy Company, which makes her favorite line of dolls called “Monster High,” Tiernan launched the drive she is calling “Soles for Souls.”Mattel had a contest asking fans of the dolls to start their own charity and become philanthropists,” said Colleen. Tiernan chose to collect shoes over anything else because nice shoes are one of the signature items of the Monster High dolls she loves.

Thanks to the tremendous support of Tiernan’s school, Seminole Middle in Plantation, the rising 8th grader was able to kick start her drive before school ended in June. She’s collected so many pairs of shoes that Mattel announced last month that she was one of the top five winners of their philanthropy contest, which will mean $1,000 in her name to her chosen charity.

Tiernan is donating the shoes to the Broward-based charity In Jacob’s Shoes, which works to provide new and gently used shoes, school supplies and athletic equipment to children in need. The organization will clean, repair and relace the shoes, and them give them to Broward students who need them for the new school year. “She wanted to work with them because she heard there are students in Broward that don’t even have one pair of shoes,” said Colleen.

In addition to the donations, Tiernan also had to write an essay for the con-test and send photos related to her project. While the first round may be over, Tiernan’s work is not done. Her mother says she plans to keep the shoe collec-tions going all the way through high school.

If you’d like to help, call 954-290-5993. For more information on In Jacob’s Shoes, visit injacobsshoes.org.

In what’s continuing to be a yearly tradition for students at South Plantation High School, students in the school’s Environmental Science and Everglades Restoration Magnet program once again took home the top

spot at the Fairchild Challenge, a multi-discipline competition focusing on the environment. It marks the sixth consecutive year that students at the school, located at 1300 S.W. 54 Avenue, has won the challenge, earning not only the Gold Award, but $1,000 to continue their environmental programming as well.

The Fairchild Challenge brings together nearly 1,200 students from 63 high schools in South Florida. An environmental educational outreach program of Fairchild Tropical Botanical Garden, the competition lets students research and critically evaluate environmental topics, become more actively engaged citizens, and come to appreciate the beauty and value of nature.

South Plantation students did especially well in the Urban Sustainability Project category. Mary Turner won a perfect score and first place for the “Planting and Growing Gardens” model she designed and built. Matthew Beck and Cameron Robertson took First Place for their verti-cal garden in the “Growing Food Made Easier” category. Taking second place were Maya Halaly and Alison Levy who concocted a Low Impact Appetizer (Green Cuisine), and Kyle McMillen and Daniel Gizachew earned Special Merit for making their Agriscience Experiment “Relevant to South Florida.” The other first place winner was in the Plants and Water Option where Aaron Jiles and Casey Gray created a video with interviews

about water usage. The Students Coordinators for the Paladins

this year were Stephanie Rodriguez and Maya Halaly, and both made a name for themselves at the competition. Halaly was named an Environmental Role Model for students and Rodriguez created a winning magazine that documented the Garden and Green Spaces option. Students in the Botany class who worked the gardens on campus and at nearby Jack Carter Harmony Park included Ethan Bello, Sarah Elliot, Devin Ellis, Spenser Estebanez, Matt Ewert, Mitch Felton, Shumiya, Amanda Lange, Andre Lindsay, Dana Mack, Cassandra Rodriguez, Stacie St. Hubert, Jason Tennant, Cassidy Van Winkle and Caitlyn Viger.

Other honors went to and Matthew Zealy, as the Teacher Environmental Role Model. Taking second place in the Writing: Investigate, Analyze and Inform divi-sion were Nicholas McKenna for “Environmental Ethics” and David Moran for

“Finding the World’s Missing Plants.” Special Recognition awards went to David Moran, Vishal Garbaran, Seaira Crea, Chelsea Hazlet and Daniel Gizachew for their “Demeanor and Style in Delivery” in the Senate; and to the performance of the Botanical Band: Natalie Arnold, Amalia Chavez, Sergenero Rankin, Jennifer Sanchez, Jasmine Spitzer-Smith and Matthew Zealy.

When students clean out their desks and lockers at the end of the school year, too many times their used school supplies are relegated to the back of a closet, or

worse, the garbage pail. But thanks to a new effort at one Plantation school, boxes of those gently used supplies will now be put to good use. Recently, students at American Heritage School’s lower school donated their gently used school supplies to fellow school children in Haiti. School officials say the donation benefits everyone. “It gives us great joy to watch our students learn valuable life lessons while they work together to help others less fortunate than themselves,” said Lauren Johnston, Principal of the Lower School at American Heritage.

The donations were part of a first annual School Supply Drive sponsored by the Lower School PTO, which used flyers, signs, emails, word-of-mouth, and collection boxes stationed throughout campus to get word out to the school’s 840 students. The students, their families and teachers responded by donating hundreds of pencils, mark-ers, crayons, erasers, notebooks, lunchboxes and backpacks that will be flown directly to Haiti. There they will be hand-delivered to an orphanage through a mission by the Oasis Church of Pembroke Pines, which says the supplies are badly needed. “We are so grate-ful to schools like American Heritage for their generous donations to such a special cause,” said Blanca Aponte, Program Coordinator of the Children’s Ministries at Oasis. “We can’t help all of Haiti but if we help one child at a time then that would change the future.”

PTO organizers say they hope it is the beginning of an on-going relationship with the Oasis Church, in the hopes that the American Heritage students can one day establish a relationship with their peers in Haiti and the Dominican Republic

so they can see who they are helping. The inaugural drive kicks off one of the new PTO initiatives for the upcoming school year in which students have the opportu-nity to give back to their local community and other communities around the world through a series of philanthropic campaigns at different times during the year.

Local home owners know all too well how frustrating it can be to maintain a sparkling clean roof in the face of such intense heat and heavy summer rains  Mold and mildew quickly grows and spread in these

conditions, turning an otherwise beautiful home into an eyesore Consequently, when customers declare war on mold and those pesky violation letters, they turn to the professionals at Roof Treatment Inc

In addition to providing excellent cus-tomer service, Roof Treatment Inc is also one of the elite few that uses the Roof-A-Cide system This exclusive chemical is the only EPA approved algaecide/fungicide currently on the market It’s unique formula is copper based, which is a natural antimicro-bial, and also one of the oldest fungi-cides known to man So in addition to receiving a two year warranty on their roof treatment, customers are also receiving peace of mind knowing that their home is being treated with an active ingredient that has a success-ful track record of several thousand years

Roof Treatment Inc is co-owned by Christina and her brother Frank Miele Recently, they sat down to answer some frequently asked questions about their Davie based business, and the methods behind their mold deci-mating success

How does Roof-A-Cide compare to chlorine bleach and conventional pressure cleaning? It is true that both chlo-rine and Roof-A-Cide are initially effective at removing impurities from a roof However, Roof-A-Cide will actually eradicate the mold and algae for two years, guaranteed Unfortunately, the use of chlorine will only remain effective for 6-12 months, at best Even more frustrat-ing, chlorine actually leaves behind a salt residue that serves as a fertil-izer and accelerates the growth of the next mold colony Basically, Roof-A-Cide is a cure that requires minimal maintenance once the initial treatment is completed, whereas chlorine traps the home owners in a vicious cycle of repeated cleaning and roof abuse that will ultimately shorten the life span of the roof itself and result in costly repairs

Tell us about the cleaning process used by Roof Treatment, Inc.? On the majority of roofs, the applicator will begin with a product called

“Roof Restore”  This specially formulated detergent is sprayed on and then carefully washed away with a low pressure hose  Once this has been com-pleted, a trained technician will apply the Roof-A-Cide product, which will guard your roof against unsightly black mold for two years  As long as you

stick with the Roof-A-Cide treatment program, roof cleaning will be a thing in the past

What are the benefits of Roof-A-Cide? Owning a home is the most important and expensive invest-ment that many South Floridians will ever make That being said, the structural integrity of its roof is paramount to protecting the value of the home itself, as well as the family that it covers With the Roof-A-Cide method, this integrity is not only maintained, it’s actu-ally lengthened By eliminating the need for repeated pressure clean-ings or caustic chemicals, concrete tiles are much less likely to shift or break, and asphalt shingles will not become as brittle or prone to crack-ing  The less that a roof is walked on or harshly cleaned, the greater its durability will be   A properly cared for roof can have a lifespan of 25 to 30 years, and implementing Roof-A-Cide into the maintenance plan can help homeowners get the full life span Unfortunately, most Floridians must replace their roof in half that time due to unnecessary wear and tear It’s also worth mentioning that Roof-A-Cide will not damage the grass or landscaping around the home

Is Roof-A-Cide environmen-tally friendly? In a nutshell, yes! An application of the Roof-A-Cide product requires 30 gallons of water This is the equivalent of a five minute shower Essentially, your roof takes a five minute shower that keeps it clean for two years! Now compare this to the 1,800 gallons of water needed to pressure clean the average 3,000 square foot roof, which must be cleaned at least once a year to achieve the same results Clearly Roof-A-Cide comes

out ahead When you add these statistics to the EPA registration, the use of a naturally occurring antimicrobial as an active ingredient rather than harsh synthetic chemicals, and the fact that it is safe to use around plants and shrubs, the decision to switch to Roof-A-Cide is quite simple It makes it easy for home owners to “go green” while saving some green It’s con-servation on both ends

How can customers reach Roof Treatment, Inc.? The office is located at 2045 S W 127th Avenue in Davie Our phone number is 954-275-1831, and we are on the web at www RoofTreatment com Contact us and let us prove to you that the “treatment really is the cure!”

eagles soar to a spot in National tournamentBy JUlie levin

The Plantation f.c. eagles u-19 soccer team recently took cen-ter stage to compete for a national championship. The Eagles earned a spot in the 2013 U.S. Youth Soccer National Championships which took place in

Overland, Kansas July 23-28. The team was expected to begin play July 24th and stay in it long enough to make it to the finals. Head Coach Jimmy Sotter said his squad was ready for a chance in the national soccer spotlight. “It’s a great feeling to be able to go to nationals,” said Sotter. “This team truly deserves it.”

It’s the furthest the U-19 core group of players have made it in national play, after losing in the State Cup final last year. Sotter said his players, many of who are collegiate athletes, were determined to return after last year’s loss and make another run at the title. They trained throughout the year and spent most holidays competing in tournaments.“They came back, and wanted to give it another shot because we felt like we fell a little bit last year,” he said.

To get to the finals, the Eagles first had to win the FYSA State Championship in Florida, where among other competitors, they had to beat Orlando’s Florida Rush, last year’s defending National Champion. They then moved on to represent the state at the U.S. Youth Soccer Southern Regionals in Oklahoma, where they took the title, qualifying them for nationals. Plantation FC also sent its U15 boys team to the Southern Regionals. That team won three games, tied one and lost in the semifinals to MLS club FC Dallas.

Sotter says the nucleus of his 19-and-under team has been together for two years, and is committed to both winning and each other. He said their success has been a tremendous group effort and he felt good about their chances at the tournament, primarily because of the strong competition they had already faced.

“It’s their dedication, their focus and most importantly, their togetherness. They play for each other,” Sotter said.

The Plantation Football Club is a non-profit organization dedicated to developing youth soccer players of all ages and genders. To see how the Eagles did in nationals and more on Plantation F.C., visit www.Plantationeagles.com

Using their knowledge and wit, students from Plantation High School very nearly made it to the championship round of a tri-county academic competition that pitted some of the best and brightest students

around against each another. Plantation High School was among 20 schools that qualified to compete in BECON-TV’s School Duel Tournament recently. The team from Plantation High School made it all the way to the semi-finals before losing to Western High School. The Davie-based school also beat Plantation’s other repre-sentative, South Plantation High School, in the competition’s first round.

Now finished with its third season, the televised academic quiz show is designed to reward intellectual talent in South Florida’s high schools. The series pits four-person teams from twenty high schools in Broward, Miami-Dade and Palm Beach counties that compete in a single elimination tournament. Chaminade-Madonna beat Western High for the championship in the final match that aired June 6.

The team from Plantation High was made up of seniors Adam Mustafa, Alexis Cruz, Gabby Martin, and Daniel Lerner, all of whom were students in the International Baccalaureate program.”The best thing you can do for intel-ligent students is put them in a room with other intelligent students,” said Roman Shtrakhman, the faculty advisor for the team at Plantation High. South Plantation High made its debut on School Duel with students from the National Honor Society. Team members were Padmini Persuad, Vishal Garbaran, Dana Mack, Nikolaus Newmeyer.

School Duel consists of four rounds of questions, covering a variety of subject areas that tested the students knowledge in everything from chemistry to pop culture. “The questions can really come from any category,” said Jim Guarasci, Executive Producer of School Duel. BECON-TV is a broadcast television station licensed by the FCC to provide noncommercial educational programming to the South Florida community.

The other Broward teams that took part included 2012 runner up Cypress Bay, College Academy, Coral Springs Charter, Deerfield Beach, Western, Cooper City, Monarch, West Broward, Chaminade-Madonna, Taravella, and Pines Charter.

Your morning cuP of coffee always tastes bet-ter with a clear head and a plan. This month, we’re helping you plan for college. It’s time once again for dorm

rooms and fraternity parties, and classes of course, but you have to find a way to pay for it first or you could be in for some trouble down the road.

Experts say that a child born in 2003 and entering a public college or university in 2021 can expect to pay $95,000 for an undergraduate degree. A private college could run upwards of

$240,000. If you take some very important steps now, you may be able to ease the sticker shock of college costs.

College costs continue to rise and many are wondering if or how they will be able to pay for this education. Compared to saving for retirement, the college sav-ings timeline is relatively short. At most it may be 18 years, and for many people it is a lot less. This can impact your ability to weather a market decline and can increase your inherent risk. Before investing in any savings vehicle, carefully evaluate its investment options.Learn the risks of entering a college savings plan as well as the tax advantages and decide which is the best option for you and your family.

Investment options with higher rates of return may take risks beyond your com-fort level and may be inconsistent with your goals.

Also, there are many events that could dramatically impact a college sav-ings strategy. As a parent you should consider: What happens to your savings if your child decides not to go to college? What happens if you have another child or you lose your job? Most college savings options have various restrictions and limitations that could impact your ability to react to changes. Carefully review whichever plans you are considering to make sure they have the flexibility and

control that you need.Although there are several college savings plans to choose from, the 529 plan

is a standout. In addition to providing a means of establishing a regular savings program for you, there are big tax advantages-namely that your investment grows tax-free until the child enters college. It can then be withdrawn untaxed to pay for tuition.

Here is a list of useful tips to help evaluate the different options available:

▸ Make sure you understand the tax benefits

▸ Be careful to examine any fees and expenses

▸ Know your options with regard to making changes

▸ Make sure you are comfortable with the investment options and risk involved

If you have additional questions, you can find more information on the IRS web-site, www.irs.gov. You can call the IRS toll free at 1-800-829-3676 to order related publications. Also, www.collegesavings.org will help you with information on spe-cific 529 plans. The toll free number is 1-877-277-6496.You and your college student should also look into available grants, etc, they might be entitled to through www.fafsa.ed.gov –the Free Application for Federal Student Aid. As always, remember to consult your tax advisor or financial consultant before making any decisions on investing for college or any other life event.

For additional information, please call 954-335-5100, visit our website at www.priorityonefl.org or stop by one of our offices located at 3000 N. University Dr; Sunrise,1900 W. Oakland Park Blvd; Ft. Lauderdale or 1700 N. University Dr; Suite 100 Coral Springs.

One of the most difficult things that Orthopedic Surgeons have to deal with is what to do with the knee that has irreversible cartilage damage.

The knee joint, specifically the undersurface of the patella, the end of the femur and the top of the tibia are covered by a substance we call articular cartilage. This looks and functions like the carpet that is covering the floor in your house. It is a smooth cushioned surface that helps the knee joint move in a frictionless environment. Without healthy articular cartilage the

knee joint can not function properly. Exposed bone in the knee joint by deficient, inefficient cartilage leads to arthritis, pain and disability.

Patients present to the office stating that they injured the knee joint. They com-plain of swelling, pain going up and down stairs, getting out of the car, chang-ing directions, unable to run or jog without pain. The injury is usually after an event that the patient can recall without any problems. The Orthopedic Surgeon gets some simple X-Rays in the office and usually they are normal. You see, articular cartilage does not show up in X-rays. After a thorough physical exam the initial treatment usually consists of ice, rest, anti-inflammatory medica-tions and physical therapy. However, if the initial physical exam demonstrates severe findings or the symptoms persist or they do not resolve, then the patient will need to get an MRI Scan to check for articular cartilage problems. The MRI Scan is the diagnostic study of choice in the detection of articular cartilage dam-age (botton photo), meniscus tears and ligament injuries.

If the patient has an articular cartilage defect (bottom photo) this is considered to be a permanent problem for the knee joint. This leads to abnor-mal friction forces, inflammation, pain and eventual destruction of the rest of the knee joint. Classically, patients who continued to have problems eventually developed arthritis and required a total knee replacement. Today, with advances in science, we can offer patients alterna-tives to try to salvage the knee joint. This consists of procedures that can be done through small incisions in the knee joint (Arthroscopic Surgery).

The arthroscope is the instrument that has allowed us to manage this issue through small incisions. We can do a chondroplasty with shaving, chondroplasty micro fracture or bone drilling or bone picking. The chondroplasty is stimulating your cartilage, stimulating your body to make new cartilage in the defective area. The recovery from this type of surgery usually requires the patient to use crutches for one month and in most cases the patient returns to full unrestricted sports activities in six to nine months from the day of the surgery.

Other patients can have a transplant of cartilage (top photo). This is usually reserved for those patients who failed to heal with the chondroplasty and have a focal well circumscribe defect in the articular cartilage. The surgery is also done through mini incisions, usually two or three. The rehabilitation consists of crutches for four to six weeks and range of motion exercises. After this healing period, the patient returns to activities of daily living and finally to sports within six to nine months from the day of the surgery.

Dr. Moya is a Board Certified Orthopaedic Surgeon specializing in knee and shoulder surgery. He completed his doctoral fellowship at Harvard University, receiving his medical degree from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (Robert Wood Johnson Medical School). Dr. Moya completed his orthopaedic residency at the University of Puerto Rico. He practices at the South Florida Institute of Sports Medicine located in Weston at 1600 Town Center Blvd., Suite C, (954) 389-5900, and in Pembroke Pines at 17842 NW 2nd Street, (954) 430-9901.

legally speAking

After a two year effort, florida legislators aPProved a new foreclosure law that significantly affects the rights of homeowners strug-gling to pay their mortgages. Under the veil of “helping Florida’s economic

recovery,” Governor Rick Scott signed House Bill 87 into law on June 7, 2013. Unless this new law is overturned by the courts, it is expected to have a pro-found impact on the foreclosure process in favor of the banks and homeowners’ associations.

The new law permits a lender or its servicer to file a foreclosure action and instead of being required to prove its right to foreclose, it unfairly shifts the burden on the homeowner to “prove” that the lender “does not have the right” to foreclose. This new procedure is time sensitive, and if the homeowner does not provide the necessary evidence, a final judgment of foreclosure is entered. In as quickly as 45 days, the property could be sold at a foreclosure auction. The new law also provides homeowners’ associations with same expanded rights to quickly evict non-paying homeowners through this new expedited foreclosure process.

For homeowners that are behind on their mortgage or HOA payments (but not yet in foreclosure), it is imperative that you immediately consult with a legal professional about your case. There are a number of “pre-foreclosure” steps that must be taken in order to defend yourself and your family from this new speedy foreclosure law. Remember that you will only have a limited amount of time (20 days) to prove that the party suing for foreclosure does not have the legal right to do so. This means that the evidence needs to be gathered BEFORE the foreclo-sure process starts, and there are critical requests for information that must be presented to lenders prior to a foreclosure to avoid losing your home.

The new speedy foreclosure law also states that if your house is foreclosed on fraudulently, you cannot get it back. You will only be entitled to file an action for damages against the lender or other party that obtained the wrongful foreclosure. We all know that in foreclosure cases there are a disturbing number of mistakes being made by banks and their attorneys. For those homeowners currently in foreclosure, it is critically important that any mistakes in the process be identified and brought to the attention of the court BEFORE a final judgment.

In short, this new speedy foreclosure law is wrong, and it clearly violates the due process rights of the good citizens of Florida. It will force many more home-owners into bankruptcy as the only reliable means of saving their home.

More detailed explanations of different options available to homeowners in foreclosure, at risk of foreclosure, or considering bankruptcy are discussed in a new consumer-friendly DVD developed by the Arcia Law Firm entitled “Fight For Your Home,” available for purchase on our website. If you mention that you heard about the DVD through this magazine, you will receive a FREE copy during the appointment to discuss your case in detail with a member of our qualified legal team.
