Bearing Much Fruit. It is the start of May and, in the northern hemisphere, some of us are about spring planting. The tasks today look to future fruit and vegetables. By analogy, God is the gardener. We are the branches, the seeds, the fruit. To be healthy, we let ourselves be tilled around, watered, weeded.
• Because of how I behave now, how will I be tomorrow and in the future?
• What tending work will I let God do to me?
• What can I do to be a more fruitful Christian?

Anyone familiar with gardening knows that proper and timely pruning is essential. The health of the plant depends upon it. An unpruned tree can quickly produce suckers that zap many of the essential nutrients from its body. Pruning requires patience and
vision. Studies reveal that plants often respond defensively to being pruned, displaying reactions that are similar to hurt or discomfort. Pruning is not easy but necessary.
A hard lesson for us to learn is that we also need to be pruned. We become far healthier when we allow God to stretch, refine, and form us into the best version of
ourselves. The fruit that then comes from our vines will be more abundant, nutritious, and robust. Left to our own devices we can easly find ourselves running amuck and
spiraling out of control. Without a proper vision and trust in the Master Pruner, we will never find the contentment we desperately desire. Nor will the work of the
Gospel stand a chance of succeeding.

Dive Deep - This is not what these new priests envisioned: They have been priests for less than a year but have only known priestly life during a pandemic. How are our new priests coping? What has been the biggest challenge and
biggest reward? Dive Deep sits down with Fathers Dominic Vahling (Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Springfield) and Michael Meinhart (St. Boniface in
Edwardsville). Go to : dio.org/podcast to listen.

Letter from Fr. Carlos Jose Osorio of St. Gertrude’s Sister Parish
Dear Fr. Paul, greetings in Christ our Lord, I hope this letter finds you in good health, peace and joy. I am Fr. Carlos Jose Osorio, at the Mission of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in
Mambone Mozambique. I do this to express our gratitude for your generosity and loyalty to us. I would like to share with you a little of what we do with your valuable
contribution that we use in supporting students. We have already graduated a total of 5 licensed teachers, a medical doctor, a dental doctor and we now have 2 nurses, as well as a group of 12 secondary school students who receive among other things scholastic
materials throughout the academic year.
The criteria we use in providing support to the students is; never to give a full scholarship to encourage and maintain the family’s commitment to the education of
their children. I would like to keep in touch more frequently.
I wish you success in your pastoral work. United in prayer & mission, Fr. Osorio
