Pastor’s Desk

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, As listed on page 2, this Thursday is the Ascension of our Lord, a holyday of obligation. The usual schedule of Masses for a holyday will be observed. Over the last few years, the 12 noon Mass has been very lightly attended. We may be eliminating this Mass for future holydays.

May is also the month of the semi-annual Mass count required by the Archdiocese for all Saturday evening and Sunday Masses over the next four weekends. Ushers will be counting those in attendance usually during the homily time when most people have finally arrived, and before the collection. We will be paying special attention to the 11am Mass in the lower church, as the numbers have been dramatically lower recently. Generally, the Archdiocese requires a minimum of 100 people for a Sunday Mass.

In addition to the traditional May Crowning at the 7:30pm Mass on Monday, May 2nd, sponsored by the Rosary Society, our Transfiguration Academy students will also conduct a May Crowning at the 9am Mass on Friday, May 6th. All parishioners are invited to both celebrations.

On May 21st, Bishop Dominic Marconi will confer the Sacrament of Confirmation on about 80 of our young people at 11am. Given that the Bishop has requested that the usual souvenir photographs be taken after Mass in the main church this year due to his advanced age and hip problems, and to give the priests the opportunity to spend some time with the Bishop at lunch after the photographs are completed, we will NOT have parish confessions on that day from 1pm to 2pm.

May 21st also marks the 5th Ordination Anniversary of Deacon James A. Detura. Deacon Jim will preach at the 5:30pm Mass and then all parishioners are invited to a coffee and cake reception in the cafeteria following the Mass. So we can prepare adequately, please leave your name and number attending at the rectory by May 14th.

Msgr. Richard Arnhols, Pastor

Reflection on Today’s Readings

Actions speak louder than words. Loving Jesus involves living his words. Living makes loving clear. To show our love for Christ, for the Church, and for others, requires more than words.

We often need reminders to do what is right and act on what we believe. We need advocates who support us publicly in word and deed. Paul and Barnabas advocated on behalf of Gentiles called to follow Christ. They spoke on their behalf to the elders in Jerusalem, where discussion and prayer resulted in declaring that no burden ought to be placed on Gentile Christans beyond the necessities heard in today’s first reading. If you’ve been to any type of public meeting, you know how heated discussion can become because people believe strongly in their opinions. It took the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, to help define these basics and invite the community to find peace. Speaking truth in love, being an advocate, listening to the Holy Spirit, living Christ’s commandments affirm and challenge us. If we let the light of the Lamb of God be our lamp and listen to the Advocate, we will love in word and deed.

“Come, Holy Spirit, be our Advocate. Remind us about Jesus’ words and actions so that we can live the Christian Way today and give glory to God and to the Lamb. Amen.”

Stewardship: Sharing our Time, Talent, and Treasure!

“...do not let your hearts be troubled or afraid.” John 14: 27

Our limited human understanding cannot begin to understand the immense power of God. Instead of trusting in God, we think we can control every outcome. Do you want to make God laugh? Tell Him your plans! The next time worry, anxiety or fear creeps in, thank God for all He has given you and trust He has a better plan for you.
