Minnesota Advertising Design Technical Update March 2010 Again this year, Carver-Scott Educational Cooperative is pleased to be hosting the SkillsUSA state Advertising Design contest. In accordance with current advertising design technical standards, the contest will be composed of three parts; Creative, Mechanical and Knowledge test.

The contest will run from 8:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. Saturday, April 10th. Room – E111 Busing will be provided from the Sheraton Hotel. Creative: Students will have three and a half hours to complete an original design using given criteria. They will be expected to create thumbnails by hand and proceed to a full size comprehensive on the computer. (Please see the computer requirements below.) Students will be expected to generate their final comprehensive into an Adobe Acrobat PDF file, which will be transferred for printing. There will be NO preliminary proofs available; everything will need to be verified on screen. Internet will not be available during the contest; contestants must use the files that they are given. In the event of unforeseen changes or technical problems, the student may be responsible for creating the comprehensive by hand... be prepared for any eventuality. Mechanical: Students will have an hour and a half to re-create a given design on the computer. Again, there will be NO preliminary proofing; all checks must be done on the screen. The final layout will also be generated as a PDF file for final printing. Knowledge test: Students will have a half an hour to forty-five minutes to complete. The test will consist of general advertising design knowledge and SkillsUSA professional development questions. Definitions, file types, processes and procedures relevant to advertising design and professional development will be the basis for these questions. Debriefing and breaks: Students will have fifteen minutes to a half hour break, depending on the time available. Vending machines are available and you are welcome to bring food and beverages to have during the break. After the contest, a debriefing with the judges will take place and industry bags will be handed out.

Carver-Scott does have a limited number of computers available, (Mac OSX.5) which are currently running the following software: • Adobe Photoshop CS3 • Adobe Illustrator CS3 • Adobe InDesign CS3 For schools that do provide their own computers, we ask that Times New Roman and Arial are pre loaded into your fonts directory. All fonts used should be compatible within a PDF, as to avoid any printing issues during the contest. A flash drive/external hard drive will be used to transfer the students PDF files for the final printing.

Materials List Aside from the computer requirements listed above, the students are encouraged to bring the following items: • An assortment of graphite pencils • Colored pencils and/or markers • Fine point black markers (i.e. Sharpies or drawing pens) • Marker paper or visualizer pad (larger than 8.5” x 11”) • A ruler that is at least 12” • Small t-square and/or triangle for drawing appropriately sized thumbnail boxes (optional) • Eraser and pencil sharpener • Flash/Jump drive in the event the student needs to save or transport their work to another machine. • One Page type written résumé • Above all, the student should bring with them whatever they feel they need to visually express the creative ideas in their heads.
