Design a film festival honoring the films of a director of your
choice. Identify a common thread that connects and runs
through all the director’s films, and create deliverables based
on that thread. These deliverables include a poster, catalog
book, DVD packaging, tickets, and packaging.
_ s o l u t i o n
I chose John Hughes as my director for this project. I wanted
to showcase his iconic teen films from the 1980s in my film
festival. After researching and watching Hughes’ films, I real-
ized that the common thread running throughout was that
everyone in his films goes through a journey and comes out
of the journey with a better frame of mind. I created deliver-
ables that reflected the subject of high school, including a
backpack, pencils, and a trapper keeper inspired catalog book.
I also created deliverables that were inspired by 1980s items
like VHS tapes and cassette tapes.

Find a brand that is dead, dying or defunct, and identify the
core values behind the brand. Based on your brainstorming
and research into the brand, create a complete and original
rebrand. Create brand extensions that bring the brand into a
completely new category.

Gibson Greetings is a greeting card company that began in the
late 1800s as a printing company. It became the third largest
greeting card company in the United States, but Gibson lost
business in the 1990s with the rise of online communication.
Taking the Gibson Greetings core essence, which was to cher-
ish and celebrate the personal connections people treasure
most, I transformed the brand from a greeting card company
to a personal connection company. Deliverables included a
book series, cafe, and home store.

Create a twelve-month calendar with a specific theme that
carries on throughout each month. The calendar can be any
size or format. Be sure to experiment with typography, color
and materials. The calendar should be a design artifact and not
the typical calendar seen in most stores.
_ s o l u t i o n
I created an astrology calendar. After researching historical
constellations, I started designing. Each month displays a dif-
ferent constellation, along with a description on the top of the
page. I wanted this to be a calendar that people can write notes
on, so I designed space on the side with rules for notes and
special dates. Wanting to create a natural, light and airy feel,
I used materials including newsprint, vellum and silver wire
binding. There are also details that show the different phases
of the moon.

ARIES is ruled by Mars and is cardinal fire—red hot, impulsive, and ready to go. Aries planets are not known for their
patience, and they ignore obstacles, choosing instead to focus on the shortest distance between where they are and where
they want to be. Planets in Aries are brave, impetuous, and direct. Aries planets are often very good at initiating projects,
but they tend to leave projects undone.

PISCES can't separate itself emotionally from whatever it's exposed to. While this is the source of Pisces' well-deserved
reputation for compassion, it's also the source of your desire to escape reality. Planets in this sign feel everything, for
better or for worse, so they need time alone to unload and reassemble themselves. Exposure to others, especially in
crowds, is exhausting to your Pisces planets.

TAURUS, the fixed earth sign, has endless patience that turns your Taurus planet into a solid force to be reckoned with.
Taurus folks never, ever quit. Their reputation for stubbornness is earned. They're responsible, reliable, honest as they
come, practical, and endowed with a stick-to-it attitude other planets envy. They're not afraid to work hard. Since Taurus
is ruled by Venus, it's not surprising to find that these people are sensual and luxury-loving too.

LEO is fixed fire, and above all else he represents pride and ego. Sun-ruled Leo wants to shine and be noticed. Natural
performers, people in this sign are into drama, and attract attention even when they don't necessarily want it. Occasion-
ally, your Leo friend may be touchy and "high maintenance." Still, they are generous to a fault. Leo appreciates attention
and praise with lavish compliments, lovely gifts, and creative outings, designed to amaze and delight.

VIRGO is called "picky" and "critical," but there is another side to Virgo. More than anything, your Virgo planet delights
in helping, and since it's a mutable earth sign, its willing to adapt to any task. Although it's true that Virgo is born with an
automatic fault-finder, it's Mercury-ruled like Gemini, and it's the sign with the keenest eye for details. Your Virgo planet
is good at details and fixing things, a trouble shooter extraordinaire.

LIBRA is the sign that's aliated with balance and harmony. Both balance and harmony require all parts of an entity to
give and take equally. No easy task. But no sign is more charming and social, or more able to coax the same qualities out
of another. Libra is cardinal air, so it wants to start something that's intellectual in nature, like a conversation. Venus-ruled
Libra planets are experts at behavior that is pleasing to others, so they specialize in manners, courtesy, and small talk.

SCORPIO planets sift through every situation for subtle class, then they analyze clues to determine what's really going
on. They're also gifted at sending subtle signals back to the environment, and at imperceptibly altering a situation by
manipulating it with the right word or movement. Scorpio planets are constantly searching for intimacy. They seek
intensity and may be crisis-oriented. They can be relentless, obsessive, and jealous. Remember, this is fixed water.

GEMINI is famous for its duality and love of new experience, as well as for its role as communicator. Gemini is mutable
air, which translates into changing your mind, so expect your Gemini planet to be entertaining and versatile. This sign
knows a little bit about everything. Gemini planets usually display at least two distinct sides to their personalities, are
changeable, even fickle at times, and wonderfully curious at times.

SAGITTARIUS tend to never feel satisfied or content, and to always wonder if there's something even more wonderful
over the next mountain. Your Sagittarius planets are bored by routine; they're something even more wonderful over the
next mountain. Your Sagittarius planets are freedom-oriented, generous, and optimistic to a fault. They can be excessive
and overindulgent. They adore foreign places and foreign people, and outdoor activities.

Create a book about survival. Find a survival topic and research
all aspects of it. Based on your research and brainstorming,
create and design a book that acts as a survival guide. The
book should include unique elements and also have a person-
ality that appeals to its target audience.
_ s o l u t i o n
I created a camping survival guidebook for city girls who have
never gone camping before. I researched other camping sur-
vival books and pulled together a book I thought many female
camper beginners would enjoy reading. This book includes
beauty tips, cooking recipes, campsite setup instructions, and
checklists at the end of each chapter. Each checklist includes
a post-it with the same information so that the camper can
bring it with her anywhere. I used newsprint to suggest the
outdoors and ruggedness of the subject matter.

Create a fashion magazine focusing on experimental typog-
raphy. Create interesting spreads that reflect the nature of the
fashion articles and try things that have not been seen before
in editorial spreads. The magazine should be beautiful and
display creative use of typography.
_ s o l u t i o n
I created a fashion magazine called This/That. I did a lot of
research, looking at many magazines that were published in
the United States and in Europe. I decided to design a large
format magazine that was clean and uncluttered. I wanted
to create an enjoyable experience for the reader, as well as
enhance the subject matter in the magazine with beautiful
typography. Using color and type, I created a personality at
the beginning of each article that carried into the following
spreads. When creating this magazine, I let go of what I was
used to seeing in magazines and applied what I wanted to see.

Create an advertising campaign for a company that reflects its
mission and personality. Create a series of posters that shows
the company in a new and fresh light, but still reflects the core
values of the brand. Make three posters that look like a set and
can be applied across a variety of media.
_ s o l u t i o n
I chose Toms Shoes as my brand for this poster campaign
project. While thinking about what kind of designs would
enhance this brand, I researched the company and thought
hard about its core values. I wanted to show that Toms Shoes
is a brand that wants to create a better world and help others.
It is a brand with heart and generosity. It is a positive brand
that wants to make the world a happier place. I took in all of
these elements, combined with the simplicity of their product
designs, and incorporated them into my posters. I wanted the
posters to be simple and happy, like Toms Shoes.

Define, research and explore a current social problem in the
United States. Based on the topic chosen, explore it through
design throughout the entire semester with a variety of proj-
ects, including posters, packaging and a book. Create design
solutions that will help solve this social problem.
_ s o l u t i o n
I chose the topic of bacteria for this class. Being a person
who was scared of bacteria, but wanting to learn more about
which bacteria are good and which are bad, I decided that this
was a good topic to explore. I decided to take a scientific and
unbiased approach to my design, which helped me present
my research in a clear and direct manner. I also did extensive
research on how society views bacteria, the health effects of
the mishandling of bacteria and antibacterial products, as well
as good and bad bacteria.

CH4 bacteria affects our daily lives, 24/7
B acteria affects our health in a significant way, but it also affects many
other significant aspects of our lives. Bacteria influence our living spaces,
our purchases and our actions. These influences affect a significant
amount of our finances and time. We make decisions everyday that are con-
nected to bacteria, from washing our hands to covering our mouths when
sneezing. Even when we are not making decisions about bacteria, we are sur-
rounded by reminders of how to protect oneself from bacteria. These things
include health posters and antibacterial products. As society has become more
conscious about the negative effects of bacteria, it has made dealing with
bacteria a part of daily life. This brings about the question of how much time
do we spend on bacteria, and how much of it is necessary or useless. Bacteria
physically live on every surface of the earth, as well as on and in our bodies,
but they also invade our minds and actions round the clock.

Living spaces are not only are occupied by tons of bacteria, they are now commonly occupied with antibacterial products. In the home, there are antibacterial cleaning products and soaps occupying cupboards, countertops and tables. In offices, gyms and grocery stores, there are hand sanitizer dispensers. In stores, there are shelves filled with antibacterial products. Peo-ple these days are more self-conscious about the bacteria and that is reflected in the spaces they live in. There are also posters covering walls of hospitals, schools and workplaces ex-plaining proper ways to cough and sneeze to avoid spreading germs.
The fear of bacteria also affects the way people act around their living spaces. People take off shoes inside their homes to prevent bacteria from entering their living spaces and keep their meat cutting boards separate from the cutting boards they use to chop vegetables.
there would be a significant difference in our living spaces if there were no antibacterial products sold.

CH5 bacteria is good for the environment,
but are we?
o ne of the things that do not tend to occur to people when they think
about bacteria is how it impacts the environment. Bacteria play a huge
role in helping the environment stay healthy and running. Without
bacteria, the earth would look very dry and empty. Modern society uses bac-
teria to help clean up waste caused by humans. The other thing that society
tends to overlook is how people’s fear of bacteria affects the environment. This
fear has led to the popularity and production of antibacterial products and
antibiotics, which in turn lead to more energy consumption and pollution. Even
though there is a lack of evidence that these products are beneficial in any
way, they are still being produced and harming the environment at the same
time. The root of the problem may originate from the way people think. Many
people are choosing to protect themselves from bacteria over protecting the
environment, even though it appears to be a lose-lose situation for both sides.

People wash their hands all the time to prevent themselves from getting skin infections or from getting sick. I have seen and heard people say that one needs to wash his or her hands for at least 20 seconds to get most of the germs off of them. Even though clean water and proper sanitation has led to a major decrease in wa-ter-borne epidemics, In a time where clean water is becoming a resource that is deplet-ing, the question of how much water is wasted on trying to protect ourselves from bacteria is an important one to reflect seriously on today.

Considering that the large majority of anti-bacterial products come in plastic packaging, there should be a big effort to recycle them. There are antibacterial products on the mar-ket that are recyclable, but there are still some that are not. But perhaps that larger problem lies in people not thinking to recycle antibac-terial products. As mentioned previously, all of my focus group participants have used or use antibacterial products, but none of them have ever thought to recycle them.

CH7 solving problems through design
t he problems that arise and have arisen with the handling of bacte-
ria originate from the lack of good education and guidance from the
govenment. Many people misunderstand the harmful effects of bac-
teria, so they resort to buying antibacterial products because they believe
the many advertisements and media that those products are necessary and
will protect them. There is also a lack of understanding about the benefits of
bacteria is rooted in the lack of education. The purpose of design is to com-
municate a message effectively. Good design can help educate and guide
society in how to properly handle bacteria, and thus steer society away from
choices that will harm it in the future. Educating people about their antibac-
terial product choices, the benefits of bacteria, the importance of recycling
antibacterial products, and the bad consequences of their choices when it
comes to bacteria, through design. will help guide society in properly han-

This is a collection of logos that I created during my time in
the Graphic Design program at the Academy of Art University.
When creating an identity, I do a lot of research, brainstorming
and sketching. My goal is to positively show the personality
of the brand through its logo, as well as create a logo that is
unique and stands apart from others.

I love to sketch, draw and explore ideas in my sketchbook. It
is a big part of my process in creating every project. It helps
me formulate and envision my ideas, and also find better
solutions. It helps me break boundaries, test limits and go on
adventures. My process is playtime to me.

Create educational materials about germs that help people
make healthy decisions about handling germs in their daily
lives. These materials include information about the types of
germs, good germs, bad germs, and how to protect oneself
from harmful germs.
_ s o l u t i o n
I wanted to create useful educational materials that would
help parents and children make healthy decisions related
to germs, but I also wanted to make these materials fun and
visually pleasing. In my research, all the educational materials
about germs I found were text-heavy and visually displeasing.
I decided to make my educational materials visually focused,
with lots of illustrations, and fun to read. I created deliverables
that include a germ guidebook for parents, a children’s picture
book, a series of educational posters, and a Web site that pro-
vides information about germs.

there are many good germs. many billions of years ago, germs actually converted the earth’s atmosphere from nitrogen-based to oxygen-based, which made it possible for life to evolve. without germs, the earth would basically look like the moon, empty, with no animals, humans, or plants.
There are germs that live in the soil that protect plants from the harmful diseases and pests. Germs also help convert good nutrients, such as nitrogen, into forms that plants need to grow.
There are germs in your body that help keep you healthy. There are bac ter ia in your gut that help you digest the food you eat.
There are germs that aid in the process of fermentat ion, which helps make delicious food like yogurt, cheese, bread, and pickles.
