The Glencoe Invitational was established in 1992 to allow for more amateur tournament golf for players from Western Canada. Over the last 23 years, the event has evolved into one of the highest ranked amateur tournaments in Canada and also receives international recognition.
The tournament is listed on the Golf Canada Order of Merit as well as the World Amateur Golf Rankings (WAGR). The WAGR ranks the top amateur golfers in the world on the basis of their average performance in counting events on a rolling cycle over the previous 52 weeks. The Invitational field is typically made up of those in the top 50 on the Golf Canada Order of Merit, and the top Canadian players listed on the WAGR. Over 70% of our players are between the ages of 19 and 23. Past tournaments have included players from New Zealand, USA, Mexico, Canada’s National Team and players from across the country. To date, 65 former participants are now playing on various professional tours around the globe. You may recognize our 2005 Champion, Graham DeLaet who is the highest ranking Canadian playing on the PGA tour.

PLAYER STATS FOR THE 2015 GLENCOE INVITATIONAL
Conner Hayden, of Chilhowie, Va., lines up a putt on the 18th green to help win the Glencoe Invitational on Saturday in Calgary.
Calgary’s Scott Secord was in contention at the Glencoe Invitational earlier this month before disqualifying himself by reporting a rules violation.
American Conner Hayden Wins Glencoe Invitational There was only one American in the field for the 2015 Glencoe Invitational.
Turns out, Conner Hayden, of Chilhowie, Va., did a darn good job of representing the Stars & Stripes.
Hayden was crowned the champion of the prestigious amateur golf showdown on the Forest Course at Glencoe Golf & Country Club, sealing a three-shot triumph with a 1-over-par 71 - especially impressive after a snowman on the eighth hole - in Saturday’s final round.
A member of the men’s golf squad at Radford University, Hayden posted a three-day tournament total of 1-over 217. His haul includes a commemorative wildlife carving trophy, plus an invite to the Mackenzie Tour — PGA Tour Canada’s 2015 ATB Financial Classic at Links of GlenEagles and an exemption to the Canadian Men’s Amateur Championship.
Calgary’s Brett Hogan (Alberta Public Players Club) led the local contingent, finishing four shots back of Hayden in a tie for third spot. As Alberta’s top performer, the 21-year-old Hogan scored a spot on the provincial team for the 2016 Pacific Coast Amateur.
Golf Weekly: Integrity Continues to be a Strong Part of the GameJefferson Hagen, Calgary Herald
Curtis Stock, Edmonton Journal Golfers have to be the most honest group in all of sports. At least those not toting the ol’ foot wedge, of course.
Case in point: Calgary’s Scott Secord has just wrapped up the opening round of the Glencoe Invitational earlier this month one shot off the lead.
A day later he has called a penalty on himself, is disqualified and instead of going for the title in Round 3, is caddying for good pal and UBC teammate Jack Wood.
In what sport would any athlete call a penalty on themselves?
Secord explained that a shot on No. 10 in the opening round of the Glencoe Invitational ended up against the lip of a bunker, so he had to take an unplayable. After searching for a rules official, he and his playing partners were unable to find one close by. So they agreed he could drop outside the bunker.
“I explained it to my dad that night and he said ‘are you sure you could do that?’ He caddied for me in the Friday afternoon round and I showed him what happened, where it was, and we pulled over a rules official and he said ‘ yeah, that’s pretty much wrong,’ so I said ‘all right, I’m done.’ ”
Secord said calling the penalty on himself was a no-brainer, even though he likely would have finished in the tournament’s top 10 and won a trophy.
MEDIA
“I said to my dad that my reputation is more than any result that could have been,” he said. “If you’re known as a cheater, take shortcuts, that’s not the kind of person I don’t think any golfer is or any of my friends that golf are.
“We just all have great integrity and we’ll do the right thing when given a chance. I think that will help us a lot later in life as well, not just at golf.”
Patrick Murphy will join Canada’s top young golfers at the Glencoe Invitational this weekend.
Top Amateurs Converge on Monster Forest Course for Glencoe InvitationalJefferson Hagen, Calgary Herald
Patrick Murphy was explaining, pre-round on Wednesday, how he didn’t see a single approach shot all spring stick onto any of the greens at the Glencoe Golf and Country Club’s Forest Course.
He almost had to eat his words.
An hour later, early into his media day practice round for this week’s Glencoe Invitational, his wedge plopped onto the front edge of the second green and spun, checking up short of a downslope that would have released it toward the hole.
A smile.
Yes, the recent rain has softened up the Forest monster just in time for the Glencoe Invitational, one of Western Canada’s most prestigious amateur golf tournaments, which returns after a three-year hiatus, running Thursday through Saturday at the Elbow Valley track.
“Honestly I think we’re a little lucky that it’s rained recently,” said Crossfield’s Murphy, one of 54 players set to tackle the Par-72, 7,505-yard, tree-lined, sand-bellied beast. “I think it’s going to help, especially for the newcomers who’ve come here because they don’t need to know as much where the ball needs to run up to the greens . . . if they can stick an 8-iron on there, rather than playing for a 20-foot release, it becomes a lot easier.
“If it gets windy and dries out a little bit, that’s when some course knowledge could come into play.”
And Murphy, a member of Team Canada’s development team, has that in abundance. The 18-year-old estimates he’s played the renovated
Forest course 20 to 25 times since it opened last year and has the unofficial renovated course record of 67.
Will we see scores that low this week?
Co-chair Dale Goehring, the 1997 Canadian Amateur champion, doesn’t think it’s likely anyone challenges Lindsay Bernakevitch’s 2003 record of 9-under for the tournament.
“I honestly believe the record will continue,” he said. “I don’t think we’ll break that record this week unless someone really lights it up. I think the course is tougher than it used to be. So I think it will stand up pretty well.”
Goehring will also play in the event, his 17th time, dating back to 1992 when he was here for the tournament’s first year. He hasn’t won yet, but that doesn’t mean the now 44-year-old can’t try to beat all those kids.
“It’s funny. I joke now because I don’t know exactly when I became an old guy, but it happened somewhere along the way,” he said. “I enjoy it. I still played the Canadian Am last year. Seventeen years ago I won the Canadian Amateur, so for me personally this is just giving back to golf a little bit. It’s a little token of what I can do as a volunteer and help support the young guys coming up.”
What a field it is — from reigning Alberta Amateur champ Tyler Saunders of Sturgeon County to five-time Manitoba amateur winner Todd Fanning to internationals Jarryd Dillas of Bermuda and American Conner Hayden. Then there’s the rest of Team Canada’s development squad — joining Murphy and Saunders is Trevor Ranton, A.J. Armstrong, Etienne Papineau and Tony Gil.
“It’s a good experience to be with the team and play with other good players across Canada,” said Gil, the top-ranked amateur on the development squad, who is from Vaughn, Ont. “It’s just motivation, really. Let’s say Etienne has a good week this week. It just motivates the rest of us to play better.”
Murphy has been giving tips on how to play the course.
At dinner last night we just talked about what the expectation was playing a harder golf course than we usually do for junior tournaments,” he said. “I think the biggest key here is limiting mistakes. You hear ‘patience’ a lot, but in junior golf when the courses are easy, we fire at almost every pin. Here I might fire at 12 pins a day. The others it’s ‘hey, if I hit it to 20 feet, I’ve got a decent look at birdie. I’m not going to get too greedy.
“The big story this week is the course. There are a lot of good players and you’re going to see some high numbers this week.
“If you’re a little bit off, this golf course can beat you up if you’re not playing well.”
CHIP SHOTS: Tee times begin at 8 a.m. each day with the final round leaders teeing off at 10:30 a.m. Saturday.

“I can truly say after playing on Tour for 10 years, your Event was run every bit as professionally as anything I have participated in. From the golf course to the reception, volunteers, facility... WOW!”
Todd Fanning, Winnipeg, MB Five time Manitoba Amateur Champion
“I just wanted to say the tournament was amazing! I think it was the best run tournament I have ever played it. Everything was handled wonderfully, the golf facility is awesome! I look forward to coming back to this event next year.”
John Mlikotic, Kelowna, BC
“This is one of the best run events I’ve played in my amateur career and look forward to playing it next year!”
Scott Secord, Calgary, AB UBC Thunderbirds
“I was hoping that this event could rekindle the passion I had for amateur golf and the reason why I care for it so much. I'm happy to say that I left the Glencoe with a renewed love of the sport that has given me so much and I owe it in large part to the staff and membership at your facility. Please on my gratitude to the Invitational Committee Members for everything they did and the sponsors for making it possible.”
