B. Discussion of pattern

In most cases, the English word "but" is rendered in Spanish by pero. However, when "but"introduces a correction or substitution or for something which has just been denied, it is translated bysino or by sino que when a finite verb follows. Thus sino (que) can be considered to mean "but(rather)", while pero means "but" in the sense of "however". Note that sino or sino que must alwaysbe preceded by a negative clause or phrase. Sino (que) is also used with the following meanings:

"except” Nadie puede hacerlo sino yo. Nobody but me can do it.

"only" No tengo sino dos dólares. I only have two dollars.

"(not only)...but (also)...” No sólo toca la guitarra, He not only plays thesino que canta también. guitar but also sings.
