The Excellence In Concrete Awards program began 36 years ago, and continues today, as a way to recognize projects that use concrete in extensive or innovative ways.

Each year, the Excellence in Concrete Committee works to categorize, judge, and present all the amazing entries that you will see tonight. This team effort culminates at the Excellence in Concrete Awards Banquet. Distinctive plaques are given to the owners, architects, engineers, concrete suppliers, contractors and concrete finishers at our annual banquet. EIC awards are well known, and carry a great deal of prestige throughout the industry.

The entries are judged as best-of-category and include bridges, commercial, ICF, residential, public facility, craftsmanship, transportation, industrial, utility and other categories that apply from year to year. Recent award winners have included an historic bridge restoration on the North Fork of the Rogue River, University Pointe at College Station and Jeld-Wen Field.

Tonight, as we celebrate EIC’s 36th Anniversary, you will see the pride this program has brought to concrete producers and contractors around the state. OCAPA and OACI will continue to encourage high quality concrete products and recognize true excellence in the industry for many years to come.

Lifetime Achievement Award

Pat Hynes, PE

Pat Hynes has been in the concrete industry for over 40 years. He graduated from the University of Idaho in 1972 and soon after started working at Monroc’s precast plant in Eagle, Idaho. In 1985, Pat moved to Oregon to start working at the Morse Brothers (Knife River) Prestress Division in Harrisburg. This year Pat will be retiring from Knife River after 31 years of service.

Pat has helped advance the concrete industry both locally and nationally. On the national level Pat has been involved with PCI (Precast/Prestressed Concrete Institute) for over twenty years. He is the chairman of numerous committees and also has been an author in two editions of the PCI Design Handbook, which is the “bible” of the precast concrete engineering community. Recently Pat has helped develop and promote the use of carbon fiber shear grid in insulated concrete panels in the US and around the world. Pat will say that some of

his best friends have been made through volunteering in these organizations.

Pat is a Past President of SEAO, SEAI and OACI, and a lifetime member of SEAO. On a local level, Pat has been involved with CSI and AIA. His passion has been helping the young professionals of our industry. He is known for showing up at architects and engineers offices just to see how things are going and if they need help. He is also one the inaugural Board of Directors for the PCI Education Foundation. The Foundation provides curriculum and funding to Universities with Architectural and Engineering classes.

When he is not working, Pat enjoys traveling, skiing, duck and goose hunting, working on his

property, and spending time with his dog Albert (named after Albert Einstein). Pat is also diligent about keeping in touch with his family and friends. He is especially popular with children around Halloween with his 250lb pumpkins, not so much with the parents that “get” to take the pumpkins home.

We will all miss Pat after he retires but rest assured we will all “keep smiling” when we think about the impact he has made on all of our lives.
