The fissures thus provide avenues for escape of buoyant magma,thence formation of seamounts, islands, and volcanic ridges. Today, manyfissures propagate, not always at the same rate, in directions immediatelyopposed to the direction of plate motion, and this gives rise to the linearvolcanic chains of the Pacific.”
