479/17 flown by Ltn. A. Raben, Jasta 18, Montingen (Montoy – Flanville now), France, October 1918A
After command of Jasta 18 was handed over to August Raben, who previously CO'd Jasta 11, the appearance of the unit's fighters went through some changes. Originally, the noses of the fighters were in red, while the remaining upper and side surfaces were in dark blue. Now, the upper and side surfaces of the front of the aircraft were in red while the rear section including tail were in white. The lower surfaces remained in the factory blue. The sides of the fuselage were painted with a black or white bird which symbolized the CO's name, since the translation of Rabe is 'Raven'. The original white base colour in the crosses on the upper wing were irregularly overpainted with red after the changes to the national markings were implemented in the spring of 1918.
B 503/17, Ltn. Hans Körner, Jasta 19, Balatre, Belgium, April 1918
The road of combat for Hans Körner was anything but typical. He joined in the ranks of Jasta 8 on the January 8th, 1917 and two days later downed an observation balloon at Yper. In February he was transferred to Jasta 27, returning to Jasta 8 after only two weeks. By May he moved on to the ranks of FA(A) 246 on the Macedonian Front, where he would gain his second victory. In October 1917 he found himself bac kat Jasta 8 for a third time, where he achieved another victory. In December he was once again transferred, this time to Jasta 19. Here he would serve out the war, and also down a further four enemy aircraft. Flying, which continued to do after the war, proved to be fateful to him in an indirect way – he died in a motorcycle accident on his way to the airfield. Hans Korner’s aircraft sporting the factory paint finish consisting of the brush-painted parallel stripes of the olive-green paint applied to the canvas covering the frame structure, carried the white flashes marking on the sides and top of the fuselage. The horizontal tail surfaces were painted in yellow with black stripes, the engine cowling was white, both used as the Jasta 19 markings.
