The LSU Tigers lost a game Saturday night that they wouldn’t have had a chance to win back in early October. Another heartbreaking classic indicated these Tigers were not afraid of Alabama and their now out-of-the-running for the Heisman Trophy candidate Amari Cooper.

Much like the game against Ole Miss, the Tigers dominated the offensive line of scrimmage with what has to beconsidered the best line in the conference and maybe the country. Ironically, it was a dumb mistake by left guard Vidal Alexander that gave the Tide the chance to stop LSU with a field goal. That led to a mistake in the following kickoff when the LSU boot went out of bounds, giving the Tide a last gasp in which to tie the game and go into overtime.

Unlike 2011 at Bryant Denny Stadium, the 2014 Tigers didn’t have enough left in the tank to push the victory button.

The Tide won because their quarterback had more experience in winning than Anthony Jennings, LSU’s QB. Jennings had an excellent chance of gaining a first down and goal to go on LSU’s fourth down in OT but chose to toss the ball into the end zone. Questionable no calls by the refs then ended the Tigers’ chances of tying the game in the first overtime.

Jennings also blew an opportunity at the end of the first half when he made a rookie mistake by throwing to a spot even though the receiver had fallen down, giving Alabama an easy interception and a field goal to tie the game at the half.

Cooper, the shoo-in for the Biletnikoff Award given to the nation’s top receiver, dropped at least six passes in the game. He was targeted at least 16 times as the Tide tripled the passing attempts by the Tigers, without too much more success.

The Tide won with Cooper but could have easily lost with him after his poor performance against the best secondary in the league and probably the country. It certainly cost him any outside chance he had for winning the Heisman as on most plays he looked ordinary at best.

Alabama had their toughest test of the season, even more so than against Ole Miss, especially trying to stop the Tigers’ g round game. N e x t y e a r ’ s o f f ens i ve l i ne won’t be as good as this year’s with the graduation of La’el Collins at left tackle and Elliot

Porter at center and the expected early departure of the aforementioned Alexander at left guard. But the Tigers have two experienced starters returning and enough talent stockpiled to create a comparable line for 2015. Everything else has to be an improvement for next year, with the moderate losses in the defensive backfield and at running back.

Linebacker will be a strength as will the defensive line and the entire secondary, which is led by amazing true freshmen, redshirt freshmen and sophomores. A couple or even three Tigers could be drafted from this secondary but at least five highly experienced players return, led by Tre’Davious White, Rashard Robinson, Ricky Jefferson and Jamal Adams.

The noticeable difference between Alabama and LSU’s play execution was the speed with which the Tide ran their plays. ‘Bama was quicker and more confident but most of that quickness and confidence was absorbed by LSU. LSU also backed off their defensive pressure in overtime, playing more not to lose than to win. That cost the Tigers in the end. If the starting quarterbacks had been switched before the game, LSU would have won the game by at least ten points.

‘Bama’s signal caller really isn’t that good but he doesn’t make the mistakes of Jennings and is more confident in pulling the trigger, much like A.J. McCarron the past three years was for the Tide. Neither team will be much better at QB in 2015 but the Tigers will be a much more experienced and confident team heading into Tuscaloosa next November and should have the edge on Nick Saban’s team. Les Miles has proven his philosophy can develop a team’s spirit but not the killer instinct to win the important games in crunch time to take this program to the next level. He still needs to take the wraps off of Cam Cameron and find a quarterback coach to bring his QB recruits to the level most of the other players achieve. Miles’ players are less developed at LSU than many SEC programs. Their talent level then can be improved tremendously in the NFL, where challenges are tougher than they are in Baton Rouge. No one questions Miles’ ability to recruit but the question remains: does Miles have the personality to get the best out of his players in critical situations which would reverse heart aching losses like the one on Saturday night? I still think he doesn’t and so the talent of the Purple and Gold reaches higher levels in the pro ranks than in Tiger Stadium, while Alabama professionals are a step or two behind the Tigers who play on Sunday, because Nick Saban wrings them dry before they leave Tuscaloosa.

During the 10-week session, students were given a unique overview of the Sheriff’s Office, to include presentations from the different Divisions of the agency to include Patrol, Narcotics, Criminal Investigations, Corrections, Communications, Marine, Special Services and Reserves.

Additionally, attendees received eye-opening training on Use of Force, the TASER Conducted Electrical Weapon and real time active shooter scenarios. The students also learned about the judicial process, to include the District Attorney’s Office, Justice of the Peace and Probation and Parole. Prior to the Academy’s conclusion, everyone had the opportunity to shoot different firearms at the Range Day and completed a two-hour Ride-Along with a deputy on patrol.

Sheriff Greco says, “Everything we do is to keep Plaquemines Parish safe. We are very fortunate to live in such a great community and have great citizens. We sincerely appreciate the cooperation of our residents and business owners and are always looking to

better our relationship with them.”

Sheriff Greco and the entire PPSO staff was extremely excited to have had the opportunity to offer this one of a kind chance to our citizens and give them a new perspective of their Sheriff’s Office.

The PPSO is already planning our next Citizen’s Police Academy and hope to have it soon next year.

PLAQUEMINES PARISHFISHING REPORTS 11.13.14

Texas is gonna have a big fish fry. Will, Clay, Brian, and Billy smoked the trout with Capt Lloyd Landry. (Right)

Andy and Russ smashed the trout and reds in Black Bay with Outcast Fishing Charters. (On Left)

GENERALLY SPEAKING

No more speck-u-late-ting! No more speck-u-waiting! The specks are in and are of keeper size. They are all over. Beshel’s reports catches of 16” to 21” trout. Others are catching more but many smaller fish towards the delta but still are limiting out like it’s a normal summer or early fall. In any case, the wait is finally over as these yellow mouths are biting live and artificials equally. Enjoy this great fall weather while you can and bring the rig and the riggings for a great day of fishing Plaquemines Parish. The reds are still biting, of course, and you can still pick up lots of other species while you wait for your favorite fish to bite.

MGM MARINA - MGM has crazy trout action this early November. Limits are being caught in the canal, in Lake Laurier, Bay Round and Oak Bayou, along with the usual redfish harvest on the river’s west side. The dock fishermen are limiting out as well. Leona says the best time to dock fish is right before or right after a front moves through. Bring the family down and settle in for a day of leisurely fishing off MGM’s dock for very little money and lots of speck action! MGM MARINA 504-656-2267.

LLOYD LANDRY - 504-912-8291. FISHING THE MIDDLE WITH LLOYD. Get the grease hot ‘cause the reports from Port Sulphur to Venice are awesome. Limits of trout and reds are coming in on both sides of the river. Lots of birds are diving on shrimp in Lake Washington and Bay Adams. Make sure to measure your specks accurately since the legal size in 12 inches and you will catch a ton of undersized trout. For reds, fish the broken marsh along Grand Bayou with spinner baits or Gulp! and a cork for plenty of action. Yellow Cotton Bay has also turned on with many trout showing up. On the east side, Black Bay is full of reds. Trout can be found around Quarantine Bay and California Bay. If birds aren’t working, fish the oyster reefs and points. This is a great time of the year to take the family out on a fishing trip, so come down to southern Plaquemines Parish and enjoy south Louisiana’s best fisheries. Good luck and tight lines. LLOYD LANDRY. OUTCAST FISHING CHARTERS 504-912-8291

BESHEL’S BOAT LAUNCH - The trout are inside big time at Beshel’s! Robert says he and a friend are out catching their limits this Tuesday morning with most of the specks in the 16 to 21” range. It doesn’t matter where you go….from American Bay down and east and west. They’re being caught on Tsunamis, VuDu shrimp, topwater Bones and live shrimp. Try root beer, chartreuse and purple or pearl colors. It’s about time the specks showed up inside, so if their at Beshel’s, you can bet they’re all over the area south to the passes. Try the small bays first, then move around. Robert says today’s fishing has been in a 50 yard radius. That’s great news for this fall. BESHEL’S. 504-333-4469. BESHEL’S MARINA AND BOAT LAUNCH/BOAT SLIPS.

VENICE SPORTSMAN’S LODGE AT THE MARINA - DAN SKERMETTA. Fishing the Venice area has been very productive lately in spite of the wind and dirty river water. I have had plenty of redfish and a lot of bulls if you want to catch them too. The bigger trout have been coming from the outside areas and the smaller school trout from the Yellow Cotton Bay area. Offshore boats, when they are able to go, have been doing well with the yellowfin and blackfin tuna. They are still catching cobia and snapper on the way in from their tuna trips. CAPTAIN DAN SKERMETTA. 504-481-2320.

JAY QUIROS. OUT OF VENICE ALONG THE PASSES. 504-228-5895. Jay has been staying extremely busy cranking in the reds, specks and other species during this lovely time of year. All the reds and specks are coming into the river, which, by the way, is starting to clean up again. Just take a lead head and put a piece of market or fresh bait on it and drop it to the bottom for all the white trout and flounder action you can stand. The wind is down, November and December are great fishing months, but don’t forget common sense and fight the fronts. Jack Cravelle and sharks are no longer a problem, so enjoy the rest of the year. JAY QUIROS. ON A MISSION FISHING CHARTERS. 504-228-5895.

Two of my many Brothers-in-law Miguel Gutierrez and Raul Guti. What a day! Fishing with JAY QUIROS. ON A MISSION FISHING CHARTERS

Not a bad Catch. These guys fish with Capt. Jay, ON A MISSION fishing charter several Times a year-----and you can see why. Fishing with Capt Dan and you to can catch big reds like these.

Jerry and his group fishing with Capt Jay Quiros

Capt. Dan and Capt. Roc. with 365 lbs of trout and redfish caught in Venice, La. Nov. 11, 2014.

2 Texans brought their baitcasters with Them and ended up with 50 trout that weighed 128 lbs along with a few red fish ( in the wind and dirty water) ! Dan Skermetta

CAPT HOOP -- OUR FREEDOM

I was planning on going to town and getting broken things taken care of as well as replacing lost baits etc. on Monday but the phone rang. I took a one man trip for bull reds. Our day started off with this beautiful 38 incher.

It was a very fat fish as well as a beautifully marked fish. It went back for somebody else to enjoy in the future.

Wes is from Florida on the south east coast and has not gotten many redfish. He normally goes fishing offshore. Another pick type of day was ahead of us. I was glad the winds were a lot calmer than they had been. This allowed us to have a reasonable drift.

We were losing a few throughout the day. One broke off and a while later the cork pops up near the boat. I go after it thinking the fish might be still on it. The fish had gotten free and the loss of that fish was on me. The line had broken about 2-3 feet above the cork. I usually keep up with the chafing of the guide but I missed this one. There were no cracks or chips in the guide just normal chafing.

This fat slob fish went 29 pounds. We landed several above 25 pounds but never got one in the 30 pound and up range. We ended the day with 12 for 18. A lot of action for one guy.

Life is Good!

Fishing is not a matter of life or death. It's more important than that.

Hunter Orange ReminderWith deer hunting season underway, the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries reminds deer hunters that the wearing of hunter orange (fluorescent orange) clothing is not only required by law, it is a very important safety practice.

During the open firearms season for deer, any hunter in possession of buckshot, slugs, primitive firearm or centerfire rifle must display on their head, chest and/or back a minimum of 400 square inches of “hunter orange”. There are some exceptions to this requirement:

Hunters on private land may wear a hunter orange cap or hat instead of the 400 square inches of hunter orange.

Hunters on legally posted and privately owned land are not required to display hunter orange while hunting from an elevated stand. However, hunters must display the required hunter orange while walking to and from their elevated stand.

Hunters using archery equipment are not required to display hunter orange when hunting on legally posted land where firearm hunting is not allowed by agreement of the landowner or lessee.

All hunters (except waterfowl and dove hunters) on Wildlife Management Areas (WMA) must wear a hunter orange cap in addition to the hunter orange on their chest/back when a firearms season for deer is open on the WMA.

Hunter orange is an unnatural color and dramatically improves a hunter’s visibility to other hunters. Some hunters are concerned that deer will be alerted to a hunter’s presence if they wear hunter orange. Research into deer vision indicates that while deer see color, they don’t see it the way most humans do. Deer are essentially red-green color blind, meaning that red, green and orange all look about the same to a deer. Hunter orange does not look much different to a deer than the various shades of green clothing many hunters wear.

In addition to the inability to distinguish between some colors, deer do not have very sharp vision. Their inability to see fine details means that deer are unlikely to detect a motionless hunter, even when the hunter is wearing hunter orange. Most of the time, when a hunter is detected by a deer, it is because of the hunter’s movement or scent.

Hunter orange is particularly important in heavy cover and during the low-light hours in the early morning and late afternoon when visibility is reduced. In all conditions, hunters must take the time to positively identify their target and what is beyond it before they fire a shot. Wearing hunter orange will help keep hunters safe and in compliance with the law.

Kalkomey Enterprises, the provider of LDWF’s online hunter education course and hunter education manual, has produced a video that demonstrates the effectiveness of hunter orange. The video is available at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7kjSI79ss9I.

As the temperature plummets in many parts of the country, The Humane Society of the United States sees a marked increase in the number of complaints of dogs and cats left outside with no food or shelter. We encourage you to contact local law enforcement agencies, because pets left outside in extreme temperatures without food and shelter are at risk of hypothermia, frostbite, and even death, placing their owners at risk of facing criminal charges.

The act of leaving a pet outside without food or adequate shelter often receives less attention than a violent attack against an animal, but neglect is a crime. Especially in these cold months, it is important for people to bring their pets inside and for others to report neglected animals to law enforcement,” said Ashley Mauceri, The HSUS’s deputy manager for animal cruelty investigations, who fields these calls.

If you see a pet left out in the cold, speak out. How you can helpReport what you see: Take note of the date, time, exact location and the type of animal(s) involved and write down as many details as possible about the situation. Video and photographic documentation of the animal, the location, the surrounding area, etc. (even a cell phone photo) will help bolster your case.

Contact your local animal control agency or parish sheriff’s office and present your complaint and evidence. Take detailed notes regarding who you speak with and when. Respectfully follow up in a few days if the situation has not been remedied.

If you still need help, call The HSUS or visit http://www.humanela.org/cruelty.htm

Hope you all had a safe and Happy Halloween. It turned out to be a beautiful night. I love being outside on cool nights. It is just so refreshing. And than, of course, after the fun of Halloween is All Saints Day. I told myself I was not going to make a lot of bouquets this year. I am still having major issues with my hand and really don’t like the idea of surgery because than it will be permanently useless. But, I just don’t know how to say NO. I guess it is because I really love working with flowers and I miss it a lot. The fragrance and the beauty of each one just makes me happy. And yes, I went over board, yet again. Thank goodness they have medication to help with the pain.

Anyway, this is one of the bouquets that I made for All Saints Day. I am a firm believer in having Football Mums for All Saints Day. It is something that my Mom always made sure our family members had, so I guess it just carried over. Have to keep the tradition going. And it had to be red and white. I like to put a little fall color in the arrangements just to break it up some. In this bouquet I have the Mums, red carnations, and rust colored cushion mums. I also added some Misty Blue Limonium. I love the wispiness of this accent flower. This is super simple to make. Just need a durable plastic container, floral foam, some jade or leather leaf fern, and don’t forget the ribbon of your choice.

Well, that’s it for now. Carlea’ and I are busy working on her Christmas gifts for her class. And it may take us some time to complete those. But, we are definitely having fun with those. So until next time......What is your next craft project going to be? Mine…making Christmas gifts with Carlea’ and having lots of fun doing it!

Words to GROW by!LANDSCAPE TIPS

This time of year, homeowners should plan for the late winter or early spring plantings.

Plan to store caladium tubers before foliage freezes. The tubers will probably rot in our soils over winter. Gradually decrease watering until foliage begins to die. Once foliage has faded, lift the tubers, wash and allow to dry, then pack in peat moss or dry sand and store in a cool location or hang in an old nylon stocking until planting time in April or May. Do not allow tubers to freeze while in storage.

Bulbs - Although it is beyond the recommended dates for planting most spring flowering bulbs, it is not too late to plant hyacinths and tulips. Do not plant in wet or frozen soils.

Plant tulip bulbs - which have been refrigerated. Tulip bulbs must be planted immediately upon removal from cold storage. Experimental evidence indicates that exposing bulbs to 10-14 days of room temperature (72 degrees F) after removal from cold storage erases the benefits of cold storage.

Roses - Prepare beds now for January planting. Select a sunny area where the soil is rich and well drained. Raise beds for better drainage. Incorporate generous amounts of humus (leafmold or barnyard manure).

Trees - December, January and February are excellent for planting trees in Louisiana. Nothing contributes more to the appearance of home and community than well-placed and well-selected trees. Consider our native Louisiana trees such as swamp red-maple, sweet gum, magnolias, live oak, sycamore, pines and many others for large shade trees. For smaller flowering trees, crape myrtle, dogwood, parsley hawthorne, deciduous holly, American holly and red bay are among the many possibilities.

Remember that deciduous trees are often appropriate close to a building because they allow the sun to filter through in the winter. Most of our colorful spring flowering trees are deciduous. In selecting trees for street plantings, remember that trees such as live oaks tend to have branches that are low and require a great deal of pruning maintenance to be successful. A better selection might be sycamores or varnish trees that are more pyramidal. Crape myrtles and American hollies are excellent for street plantings in many parts of the state. Try to select a tree and promote its use in your community. Repeated use of a tree will give unity and character to the area.

PRUNING SHADE TREES HELPS MINIMIZE INJURYRare is the yard tree that does not need pruning in its lifetime. There are several reasons a tree may need pruning. Most immediate is a doctoring to aid in recovery from storm damage. Other practical reasons deal with reducing weight and stress on the plant, lessening the shock of transplant, removing of dead parts or halting the spread of disease.

Trees also are pruned to adapt them to man’s environment, such as keeping limbs from coming in contact with power lines, rubbing against the home and other objects or obstructing the view of traffic signals. Then there is an esthetic reason, mainly to shape and otherwise trim the tree to make it more attractive in the home landscape. If limbs are less than one-half inch in diameter, they can be removed easily with a pair of hand clippers. As they increase in size, a special pruning saw or chainsaw will be necessary.

To do a good job, you need the right kind of saw. An ordinary carpenter’s hand saw is not best, because it tends to bind as it moves into a cut. A pruning saw for general yard work is suggested. Some have a slight curve in the blade, which aids the sawing action in tight spaces. The teeth of the pruning saw, being much larger than on the hand saw, will cut through limbs much easier.Removing limbs to improve the health or vigor of the tree is a desirable goal, but if done incorrectly may injure the tree even more.

Steps to Proper Pruning

1. Locate the branch bark ridge. This is a slightly swollen collar around the base of the limb next to the trunk.

2. If the limb is large, remove it with a stub cut. This is done by making the first cut about one-third of the way through the limb on the underside, approximately 4 inches from the trunk. Then place the saw a little closer to the trunk on the topside and cut off the entire limb, leaving the stub. The limb will break off at the stub cut.

3. Make the final cut at the branch-trunk ridge to remove the stub. If using a power saw, make the final cut on the upstroke.

Stub cutting safely removes the branch without peeling the bark down the side of the tree. It also prevents splitting of the wood, which increases the size of the wound.

A tree will heal a wound much faster if the cut is made where the limb joins the branch collar. If the limb is cut flush with the tree, the wound will take much longer to heal and there will be a greater chance of rot and decay getting started. Same is true with stubs left on the tree, which take much longer to heal then the recommended final pruning cut. Chances of rot and decay development are quite high in hardwood species if the branch stub is left on the tree.

Avoid removing branches that exceed 4 inches in diameter, if possible. Branches that size or larger create big wounds which have difficulty healing.

The most pleasant time to prune branches from most trees is in winter or very early spring, before the leaves form. Spring pruning should be avoided on maples and birches, because they bleed sap heavily at that time. Summer pruning is better for those trees. Winter pruning of pines may be best because pine beetle are less active and wounds will partly heal before spring.

Slidell Becoming a “Hollywood Magnet Town”

by Tony Onellion

Seems you can’t walk around Slidell these days without running into a movie crew or a casting call somewhere. Earlier this year, the city auditorium was the setting for a three-day casting call for a movie to be shot in the area.

Last month, Ashton K u t c h e r a n d h i s girlfriend were seen around town, especially Olde Towne, enjoying the sights as they visited the area for a wedding. A few years ago, part of the movie “Chess Records” was filmed along Carey Street.

And this month, the movie “Kidnapped” with Halle Berry had a car chase and crash fi lmed along Carey Street and in front of our publication office. If you’ve wondered how the crews film the drivers while the car is in motion, yesterday’s action showed one of four rigs where the driver of the chase car was driving on top of the car, much like the fireman who steers the back end of a hook and ladder truck. Even as a “B” movie, the production budget must be relatively astronomical as at least 60 production, transportation, catering, security and talent personnel filled the area.

A few businesses were rebranded to look like a hardware store and the like. It caused a little inconvenience to our clients but the exposure to Slidell is worth it. The crew was attentive and polite and the filming employed a n a d d i t i o n a l dozen or so police officers. Many other productions have taken place in the Slidell area as well

as other parts of the Northshore in recent years.

It all started with a James Bond movie, “Live and Let Die” starring Roger Moore as 007. That film had a ten minute chase episode filmed almost exclusively in the Bayou Bonfouca area. Expect more filming gigs here as other states unsuccessfully try to secure offsite filming budgets away from Hollywood. States like North Carolina are backing off efforts to increase their film industry. But Hollywood loves the Northshore because of its diverse topography and its proximity to New Orleans. And filming in early November leaves the Yankee crew much cooler, dryer and happier than filming in the summertime. Look for “Kidnapped” in the movies or on digital sometime next year. You won’t see our office, however…unless the left turn on Robert Street by the vehicle driven by Halle Berry somehow swung the camera over to the left as well. Everyone in the office had a Monster Ball watching the

filming on Monday.
