By Terri Sercovich

I have been a res ident o f Plaquemines Parish for 27 years. I am married to Wayne Meyers and we have two sons, Chance and Jace.

I believe that I can help keep Plaquemines Parish Schools on the list of top schools in the State and assure that the teachers and administrators continue to receive proper training and tools to continue to be leaders in education. Plaquemines Parish Schools have a great balance of “old school values”

with “new learning technology”. This needs to continue in order for us to provide the proper education to all students. Whether it is Common Core or a new curriculum, we need to make sure that our school system continues to prepare properly. Parents need to be involved with their children and work with teachers and administrations to be sure their children are getting the most out of the education being provided to them, and that their children show respect towards all administrators, teachers, coaches, and fellow students.

We need to make sure that all students have the curriculum available to prepare them and assist them to be successful adults after graduation. Not all students desire to attend college. This does not make them failures. There are a lot of trades that pay well and if a student has an interest in a certain area, we should be able to assist with educating those students to prepare them for a successful future instead of making them feel that if they do not attend college, they will not succeed in life.

I am a notary public and office manager for True Title. My husband is in his 28th year of teaching in the public school system and employed in Jefferson Parish. My husband and our sons are all graduates of Belle Chasse High – 1982, 2009 and 2011.

SHAYNE MEYERS ANNOUNCES CANDIDACY FOR PLAQUEMINES

PARISH SCHOOL BOARD DISTRICT 5

Battle of the Boot Sept. 5This week marks the nine-year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina. The storm changed so much in our parish, including the consolidation of Port Sulphur High, Buras High and Boothville-Venice High into the now South Plaquemines High School. Although there has always been tense competition between the Northern and Southern ends of our parish, Katrina might have also increased that rivalry.

The outlet to relieve some of this tension is the annual Battle for the Boot. This football game between the Belle Chasse Cardinals and the South Plaquemines Hurricanes is set for Friday, September 5, 7 p.m. at Belle Chasse High School.

You can expect to see shirtless young men painted in their respective blue or red school colors; fans of all ages— not just parents— coming out to support their home team; and in this election climate, political hopefuls shaking your hands and kissing your babies.

I could never write a technically accurate story about football, but I always enjoyed covering the game and talking to fans.

Winning this particular game is a moral booster for an entire community. For both teams, it is a chance to add footage to a highlight reel that may mean a college scholarship. And of course, it is bragging rights! To the victor goes the Boot.

The unofficial symbol of Plaquemines Parish is the white shrimp boot. Most Plaquemines natives can trace an ancestor or two to the aquaculture industry and history of the parish. The Boot, and the annual battle for it, is the perfect representation of

Plaquemines. A different, but no less perfect representation for Plaquemines, happened to me more than 15 years ago. The sporting event was a very large track meet in the city. Dozens of schools were competing, including my alma mater, Belle Chasse High, and Buras High School, which would have been my alma mater had my family not moved up to Belle Chasse when I was a kid. Some of my team members and I were in the bleachers watching a relay race when we saw green uniforms speeding their way around the track. It was Buras! In unison, the BCHS girls track team got to our feet and cheered for our Wildcat sisters. We cheered like they were our own team, and half-an-hour later, Buras did the same for us! It was a small moment, but it was magical— Plaquemines Parish against the world! So see you in the stands Sept. 5! Cheer for the Cardinals or the Hurricanes, but remember that in a way, both BCHS and SPHS are both your home teams!

WILLIAM “BILL” MERTZ ANNOUNCES CANDIDACY FOR PLAQUEMINES PARISH SCHOOL BOARD DISTRICT 5

William “Bill’ Mertz is announcing candidacy for School Board District 5. Bill is a lifelong resident of Plaquemines Parish. Bill, his wife Anlea, and children Chloe (BCM), Chet (BCP) and Owen now reside in Belle Chasse. A proud father of Kimberly, Amanda, Courtney, and Kaitlyn Mertz, are all graduates of Plaquemines Parish schools. Grandchildren Mekhi and Andre’ attend BEV. Bill had represented District 9 for 11 years and is now seeking your support.

Accomplishments include: Board President, Vice President, and chair of the Finance and Technologies committees. He was an integral part in the reconstruction of the District. The planning included all aspects of the educational process as well as “right sizing” the schools. This effort allowed us to move FEMA monies to other projects including BCP, BMS and Transportation North.

CBDG grants were used for additional projects in the Belle Chasse area.

Bill was instrumental in bring the Board into the 21st century. A few years ago, preparing for a Board meeting was a monumental task, countless hours and piles of material. Now the Board info is web based for all to access @ http://www.boarddocs.com/la/ppsb/Board.nsf/Public. Meetings are more effective and organized. Our policy manual is also on the web @ http://www.ppsb.org/ourpages/district_info/PlaqueminesCAPS.htm.

In the near future, the Board will have to decide on the Superintendent’s contract, renovation of Belle Chasse High or construction of a new school, and the legal wrangling over Common Core. Bill is experienced and prepared for these and other challenges that may come.

Our school system has made great stride in improving the education of our children. We are one of the top Districts in the State, but there is room for growth. My heart belongs to the children and Schools. It will be an honor to serve as your representative for new District 5.

Each year the Boot trophy, decorated with both Cardinal and Hurricane colors, is rewarded to the victorious team. Both BCHS and SPHS have had the honor, but it is currently in Belle Chasse’s possession.

I am Mary Lou Everage, Justice of the Peace for Ward 9 of Plaquemines Parish for the past six years. I am seeking re-election on the November 4, 2014 ballot. I have been married to Wayne Everage for 49 years and we have two grown sons. We have lived in Port Sulphur, Louisiana since we married. My background includes knowledge of trial procedures and court settings. As Justice of the Peace I have presided as Judge over numerous small claims suits and several evictions and I have signed many arrest warrants for the Plaquemines Parish Sheriff’s Office. I have never had a judgment appealed, nor have I been reversed on any judgment from Small Claims Court. I am also an Ex-Officio Notary Pursuant to RS 13:2586.1. As such, I have administered oaths and notarized affidavits, as well as bills of sale and automobile and boat transfers. Further, I have performed 11 weddings. If re-elected, I will continue to be available to my constituents during normal business hours and, with appointment, on weekends. I respectfully request your vote and support on November 4, 2014, so that I may continue to be of service to Ward 9 as the Justice of the Peace. I may be reached at 504-615-7863.

MARY LOU EVERAGE, SEEKING RE-ELECTION FOR JUSTICE OF THE PEACE FOR WARD 9 OF PLAQUEMINES PARISH

Hope you all had a fun filled Labor Day weekend. We enjoyed the company of my grandchildren. Dion and I worked in the yard some, Carlea’ and I crafted, we learned to play a new game (and made up our own rules up for it as we went along). And I better not forget the very tasty bar-b-que Dion and his Poppa cooked up for us! I love having them around, they are growing so quickly! As fast as time is passing, before I know it, Dion will be in college and Carlea’ will be in high school. Have to make those memories now and enjoy their company while they want to hang out with old people! Ha! Ha! Ha! And on that note let me tell you about today craft.

Decided to do something a little different, along with the usual wood pieces I paint, for a craft show I am working in a couple of weeks. A friend of mine in Michigan emailed me a picture and said I should try this. I saw the picture and told Carlea’ that this would be our next project. We took a ride to Dollar Tree to pick up the ivy bowl and then we went to Wal Mart to get the felt. We headed home to start the project.

First I washed the bowl in hot soapy water, dried it and wiped the surface with alcohol. When that dried I sponged on Deco sealer so the paint would adhere to the surface. I choose to use Light Buttermilk instead of White. I just liked it better than a bright white. I added 2 coats, allowing the first coat to dry thoroughly before applying the second coat.

Than thinking, okay, I am NOT good at free handing, I had to attempt it. And I did have to erase a few times, until I was half way satisfied with what I had. I painted her eyes black and floated Light Hauser Green on the left side of each eye and added white highlights. Her carrot nose is Bright Orange, shaded with Cadmium Orange and highlighted with Pumpkin. Her mouth and checks are Razzle Berry with highlights of White. I cut a circle in the felt to make her hat and tied a piece of black ribbon around it. Tied some of the left over felt around her neck to add a bit of color at the base. I also made a hat with 2 layers of felt. The ideas are endless with this one. Think I am going to add lights to the next one.

Well, that’s my crafts for now. So what will your next craft project be? Mine… don’t know. But, I know it will be fun!

PLAQUEMINES FISHING REPORTS 9.04.14GENERALLY SPEAKING

The white shrimp season is in full bloom and the reds continue their record and torrid pace of being caught with just about anything you throw out there. Specks still are in the witness protection program in most areas as the remnants of a lousy winter continue to affect their movements inside. The river is dropping and most water is clean but afternoon thunder boomers keep the winds and clarity as players in the late summer fishing game in Plaquemines Parish. The severity of storms is starting to abate but they are still there, sudden and dangerous. The flounder spawn is starting in the lower part of the parish and red snapper and other offshore species are still being harvested at a strong pace. No word lately about yellowfin tuna catches but we know they are still being caught in great numbers. Fishing is generally down this year from last because of the winter of 2013-14 but reports are this year’s colder weather won’t begin to approach the nastiness of last year. Let’s hope so.

MGM MARINA - Leona Squarsich. 504-656-2267. Captain Zack Mouton said he had a great Labor Day, even with the wind blowing 15 to 20 miles per hour. Barataria Bay looked like Cafe Au Lait Bay, so he headed to Wilkerson Bay and hit a couple of rogue trout. When the bite stopped, Mouton headed off out of the waves and wind to find reds. Guest Rhonda hooked up in a cut and the action really started. They were hitting live shrimp and Vudu clear with a chartreuse tail. See the other pictures Leona sent for this week’s report. Don’t forget the fishing dock at MGM and get ready for some fall action. MGM MARINA 504-656-2267.

LLOYD LANDRY - 504-912-8291. FISHING THE MIDDLE WITH LLOYD. September is an exciting month to be down in southern Plaquemines. Not only are the fish starting to move into the interior marsh, but teal are making their way down South to pay us a visit for the early teal season. On the west side, plenty of great redfish reports have been coming in. Fish the remaining islands and ponds around Bay Jaques and along Grand Liard. Use spinner baits, spoons, market shrimp and Gulp! under a cork. On the east side, redfish are pretty much everywhere. As the river falls, redfish will begin to stage up along the washouts and cuts leading to the river. The water will still be a little dirty, so tip your soft plastic with some bait shrimp and you’ll have the redfish jumping in your boat. There are also plenty of ponds with tons of grass with crystal clear water along the river from Ostrica to Baptiste Collette that are full of redfish. It will give you plenty of area to do some awesome sight fishing. Come on down and enjoy all that southern Plaquemines has to offer. Be safe and tight lines. LLOYD LANDRY. OUTCAST FISHING CHARTERS 504-912-8291

BOBBY DUGAS - BC CHARTERS LTD. Bobby’s in the Caribbean. BOBBY DUGAS. BC CHARTERS LTD. 504-912-9724.

BESHEL’S BOAT LAUNCH - BESHEL’S. 504-333-4469. Robert’s in the hospital but it’s a good thing for him because he now has no problem eating. He says it’s the best he’s felt in many a year. Too bad the fishing isn’t that optimistic at Beshel’s. The white shrimp season is here but the trout aren’t. The reds are still around everywhere and that’s always a good thing. Some trout are around Triple Pass and the edge of Black Bay. Meanwhile, the weather’s starting to ease a bit and the storm season is hardly worth talking about. Both are good things as nasty thundershowers are starting to go away in the afternoon but the weather still is keeping most fishermen away. See Robert and the gang at Beshel’s for your east bank fishing needs. BESHEL’S MARINA AND BOAT LAUNCH/BOAT SLIPS.

VENICE SPORTSMAN’S LODGE AT THE MARINA - DAN SKERMETTA. Peter Wilson was mighty glad he went fishing with Captain Dan Skermetta last week as you can see from the red he’s showing in this picture. Dan also took his daughter, Jill, and her fiancé, John Dunlap, out fishing and Jill pulled in this nice red. It was a friends and family affair as well as Jill and John’s friends, Mimi and John Ferrel from Baton Rouge also got in on the action. CAPTAIN DAN SKERMETTA. 504-481-2320.

CAPTAIN JAY QUIROS - OUT OF VENICE ALONG THE PASSES. 504-228-5895. Jay says the trout are coming in. They’re on the beaches and inside edges of the beaches. Use topwater baits. Also its spawning season for flounder in the Venice area so get on down for these great tasting fish. And redfish - well, they’re even more common than a politician on the stump in early September. Remember - the river is low, so you can stop just about anywhere and fling that line. Fish the bottom or under a cork on the surface. Jay’s been staying successfully busy, as this week’s pictures show. JAY QUIROS. ON A MISSION FISHING CHARTERS. 504-228-5895.

I now had a setup for him to use while I changed out the setup he just had. Before I even cut off the straight hook he was hooked up again. This fish also is showing Richard what a bull red does best. This one comes in for a photo op and is released without any problem.

CAPT HOOP -- OUR FREEDOM

I was to have 2 people for an inshore trip. One of them had to change his flight so I only had one guy from the Dallas area. He had never been to Venice and never in his life caught any redfish. On the way out I asked him about the fish he caught. He caught stripers and I explained to him that these fought a lot harder and do not give up or get tired. Seeing he did not want any fish to keep I figured I would give him the Bull Redfish Shock treatment.

Once in the area I show him how to work the bait. I did not have the setups I wanted to use so I told him to use a Vu Du shrimp under a cork till I could get something set up. On the first cast all hell breaks loose and he is into a drag screaming battle. Unfortunately the first one came unbuttoned. I do not have any of the weaker hook Vu Du first came out with but the stronger hook was no match for the big guy we had on.

On the fourth cast of the day he is hooked up again. This one is noticeably bigger. Fighting these freight trains in 4 to 6 feet of water is something you never forget. Once this one came in he had me hold it for a picture. His arms were feeling it a bit already. Heck he only battled 3 bulls so far. This one was right at 30 pounds.

Now we are batting 500. Time to pick up our average and that we did with a good fish hitting the deck on almost every cast he made.

This continued for over 2 hours as the fish were wearing him down. He said his arms felt like they were down by his ankles but he was not about to stop at this point. this was one of the best times he ever had fishing. He had me hold the bulls for the pictures while he rested with the camera.

As soon as I released the fish he would make another cast and BANG! We had some break offs which kept me busy retying setups. After over 2 hours of this things slowed down a bit. He was glad it did because he had a chance to get a drink of water. As he was relaxing I make my first cast of the day for me with different type of a large bait I wanted to try. Fish On! I told him “Here it’s your trip”. He puts his water down and gets back in the game. This one was a solid fat boy and bounced the scale 35 pounds.

It was very hot and I had over a dozen waters and a few diet cokes in the cooler before he added to the cooler with the few drinks he brought. Even with those I soon was looking at this.

CAPT HOOP -- OUR FREEDOM (Con’t)

UNCLE!!

From there we eased our way back fishing the edges and points picking up one here and one there. On the second slot sized one he caught he made the comment that his arms were still burning from all the fighting earlier.

PPSO Assists US Coast Guard with Possible Drowning

On Monday, August 18, 2014, at approximately 1:40 a.m., the Plaquemines Parish Sheriff’s Office was notified that a maritime industry related employee allegedly fell into the water from a barge that was stationed near the dock and did not resurface. The incident occurred at Slip #1 near Tidewater Road in Venice, LA.

Sheriff’s Office deputies, including members of the Marine Division and United States Coast Guard Station Venice responded to the location and conducted a search and rescue operation throughout the day, but were unsuccessful in locating him.

On Tuesday, August 19, at approximately 7:45 a.m., Sheriff’s Office Marine Division personnel recovered the missing worker’s body near where he disappeared.

The deceased is identified at Britt Eaves, 54, from Lake Charles, LA.

The incident is under investigation by the United States Coast Guard.

Marrero Man Sentenced for Illegal Fish Sales in Plaquemines Parish

A Marrero man pleaded guilty on Aug. 28 to commercial fishing violations committed in Plaquemines Parish.

Joseph Morris III, 30, pleaded guilty to selling fish without a fresh products license, failing to maintain records, taking commercial fish without a vessel license, selling game fish illegally, selling spotted sea trout without a permit, selling spotted sea trout without a rod and reel license, taking/selling undersized spotted sea trout, possessing commercial red drum illegally and failing to comply with charter boat regulations.

Morris was ordered to pay a $2,250 fine plus court costs, serve 120 days in parish prison suspended, and have all commercial and recreational fishing privileges seized and revoked for a period of two years. Continued litigation is pending in Jefferson Parish for additional alleged violations.

He is also facing a total of $8,329.68 in civil restitution for the illegally taken and possessed fish. Jerry Lobrano for the 25th Judicial District prosecuted the case.

Agents arrested Morris on Jan. 24, 2014 for numerous commercial fishing violations after agents secured an arrest warrant from Plaquemines Parish when Morris sold spotted sea trout and red drum to undercover agents and took agents on chartered fishing trips without the required charter boat license.

LDWF Special Investigations and Sgt. Adam Young participated in the case.

I was using the I-pilot and letting the trolling motor run the bank by itself while I got into the fishing. We found Hard head cats, Sail cats, sting rays, and an occasional keeper redfish along with some rats and one small flounder. A few gators came out to visit us and one of them decided to attack my cork. He and I did battle for a while until he decided to spit it out. I tried to get it in the background of the picture of the cork it ruined but it went down before the shutter clicked. It was about 7 feet long. No monster but a good one.

We only had one water left and he was more than satisfied with the day so we were back at the dock about 2:00. Our box totaled 8 keeper redfish. He did not want any fish to keep so I kept them and cleaned them for my neighbors and gave the bellies to a neighbor for her crab traps. Definitely a trip filled with many memories.

Life is Good!

Fishing is not a matter of life or death. It’s more important than that.

My name is Mary Jo Hebert, and I am seeking re-election for Constable in Ward 9. I am a lifelong resident of Port Sulphur and a graduate of Port Sulphur High School. I am married to Mark Hebert, I have two children, Scott Armstrong and Marcie Petrovich, and we have eight grandchildren.

I have worked in several different capacities over the years, including banking, lending, and successfully running rental property businesses. Currently

I am employed part-time as a travel agent and as a sales clerk and accounts payable/receivable clerk at Fremin’s Just Next Door. I am also a Constable in Port Sulphur, an office I have held for the past 6 years.

Since elected, I have attended all six of the training conferences sponsored by the Louisiana Attorney General’s Office. These conferences train us in the proper procedures to follow in all aspects of our duties as Constable. I work through the Justice of the Peace Court in my Ward, and perform duties required by that court, plus I have been trained in recognizing victims of human trafficking and domestic abuse, so I can get the proper authorities involved and get the victims the help they need. I have also been trained in Landlord and Tenant law, as evictions and seizures of property are part of my duties. Among my other duties are garnishments, litter infractions, and of course, service of documents issued by the Justice of the Peace Court.

If re-elected, I will continue to perform my duties as Constable with courtesy and respect, follow ethics and campaign finance laws as required by our state, and continue my training to keep abreast of changing laws in our state and parish. I would appreciate your vote for Mary Jo Hebert, Constable Ward 9, on November 4th.

My family’s ancestry dates back to the 1800’s (Buras family). My parents were the late “Lou” Friedman and Rosemary Zuvich. My wife, Denise, and I have three children; Kaley, Josh, Faith and granddaughter Alexis while also expecting a grandson in November.

I attended Our Lady of Good Harbor and graduated from Buras High School. Upon graduation, I went on to attend Nicholls State University and then served 2 years in the United States Army. Through the years, I have owned and operated several successful businesses. Currently, I have a captain’s license from the United States Coast Guard and operate a commercial fishing charter service along with numerous rental properties.

In 2002, I was elected to the Plaquemines Parish Council. After a 4 year term, I was successfully re-elected without opposition and proudly served until 2010. During my tenure, I was appointed by my peers to serve as both the Vice-Chairman and Chairman of the Council. In that time, I successfully represented the parish in both Washington D.C and Baton Rouge and was also honored to serve on multiple committees, boards and commissions:

• Coastal Zone & Management Committee (8 yrs.)• Boat Harbor Committee (8 yrs.) • Audit Committee (4 yrs.)• Regional Planning Committee (3 yrs.) • Port Harbor & Terminal District (Chairman 1 yr.)• Building Committee • Insurance Committee

My record speaks for itself, I have the EXPERIENCE, KNOWLEDGE and LEADERSHIP skills to be an effective representative for the people of Plaquemines Parish! It takes dedication and conviction to be an engaged leader and public servant. I brought that to the position before and when elected will do so again! The people deserve nothing less from their parish leaders. Please remember to vote and when you do Elect #84 on November 4th!

“PERFECT PETS, PERFECT PRICE” ADOPTION EVENT

Could Hundreds Of Pets Get Adopted During The “Name Your Own Price”

Adoption Weekend? You be their Guardian who steps up!

In a Southern Louisiana-wide effort to find homes for hundreds of dogs and cats, Plaquemines Animal Welfare Society (PAWS), Jefferson SPCA, LA/SPCA, Animal Helper, Camp Bow Wow and Zeus’ Place are partnering with PetSmart Charities® to host the “Perfect Pets, Perfect Price” pet adoption weekend.

Schedule for September 13-14, this parking lot event will take place at PetSmart’s Westbank location, 1321 Manhattan Blvd in Harvey, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day. During this two-day event, potential adopters can name their own adoption fee on any available dog, puppy, cat or kitten at the event. While no offer will be refused, adopters are encouraged to make a donation that will allow the participating shelters to continue to help animals get healthy, stay healthy and find loving homes throughout the community. And, you may be surprised to learn that the average cost to rescue groups to get your new pet ready is $488 for a dog/puppy and $417 for a cat/kitten.

Leery about a “name your price” adoption event and animals going to the “wrong” homes? Think these animal welfare organizations have gone loco? Rest assured our adoption standards haven’t changed. Adopters still get to complete an adoption application and consult with match making experts before any adoption is finalized. Only now they’ll have the opportunity to put their own price on a lifetime of love! Not only they you gain a friend for life, adopting will help make room for more pets in need.

“The goal for the Name Your Price event is to create awareness that pet overpopulation is causing hundreds of dogs, cats, puppies and kittens to be euthanized EVERY DAY in Southern Louisiana,” said Chris Beebe, PAWS Shelter Director, “This event is an amazing opportunity to pair homeless animals with loving homes and everyone wins big! The animals get a second chance, the new pet owners find a new best friend, and, thanks to PetSmart Charities and their partners, all adopting families receive a new pet owner Adoption Starter Kit chocked full of coupons for food, supplies, grooming and vet care – a $180 value in coupons. That makes this weekend’s event even sweeter!”

Whether you’re looking for your new best friend or not, you’re invited to attend the event where, in addition to lots of wagging tails, you’ll find food, beverages, music, and more.

TIGERS UP TO OLD TRICKS: TENACITY,TALENT WIN OUT BY TONY ONELLION

The LSU Tigers did their darndest Saturday evening in Houston to break Les Miles’ national record non-conference win streak. But the Tigers had too much talent for a woefully lacking Wisconsin passing game and even a thinner defensive line than LSU’s. The Tigers won like they usually do in contests like this: they wore down a lesser opponent with sheer numbers and athleticism, forcing the Badgers into fourth quarter miscues that ultimately brought LSU a win.

LSU looked ragged in the first half as quarterback Anthony Jennings could not find a rhythm. Only an 80-yard pass to Travin Dural sparked any hope that the Tigers could score against a relatively weak Wisconsin team. Penalties that only a Les Miles team gets (one each against the kickoff, punting and field goal units, a trifecta never before seen in college football) and the wasting of a timeout to get the football placed on the left hashmark instead of the middle of the field were so…Milesenian.

But LSU found its mojo in the fourth quarter as Kenny Hilliard finally had a breakout game at running back and Travin Dural averaged over 50 yards per catch. A number of true freshmen looked good, including Trey Quinn at receiver, Leonard Fournette at running back, D. Godchaux at defensive tackle and a few more. Brandon Harris was not effective during his short series at quarterback. The most game ready new receiver was redshirt freshman John Diarse, who showed the power of a tight end and the ability to catch and run like a wideout. He is the heir apparent to Jarvis Landry with a bigger upside as a scoring threat.

The biggest disappointment was the offensive line, which was more than embarrassed in the first half. No lineman looked like an SEC player, including left tackle La’el Collins. The right side of the line was beaten like a drum and Ethan Pocic’s debut as a sophomore starter at center was less than spectacular.

The most organized group were the defensive backs. Granted, they played against probably the worst receiver corps they will see this season. But they were never beaten, never out of position and only failed when the front seven caved in and they had little if any time to react to powerful running backs coming their way.

Punting was uneven but improved as the game wore on and the placekicking was excellent except for one kickoff. Miles had a surprise with a new true freshman kickoff man, who certainly has the leg to keep returns to a minimum but needs to learn the field clock to avoid any delay of game penalties.

LSU now has three cream puffs and a slightly tougher SEC opponent to take care of before the real schedule starts in October. And all the games are at home. However, they have a lot of work to do. One, the offensive line better continue to get their rhythm together as they began to do in the 2nd half, but….NOW! Two, the experimentation at defensive tackle continues as LSU presently has no SEC quality DTs that are ready to take on the likes of Auburn, Texas A&M or Alabama. Three, except for Kwon Alexander, the linebackers still look confused and wussy. Four, tight ends. Guys, the ball was thrown to you THREE TIMES and all you did was drop a gift first down and fumble away another. Don’t look for an LSU TE in the NFL anytime soon. And five, the quarterback play needs to step up in regards to reading progressions, having pocket awareness and showing maturity and patience. Despite this: look for 5 and 0 going into October.

Byron Marinovich is announcing his intention to seek a second term as District Nine Parish Councilman. Byron is a lifelong resident of Buras and served as the Council Chairman for two years. He attended Holy Cross and LSU and married his wife, Kelli Bulot Marinovich, 18 years ago. They have a daughter, Laura, 27.

Marinovich worked for Chevron for 18 years and opened the Black Velvet in Buras ten years before Katrina. After the storm, the Black Velvet became a restaurant when it reopened in 2007. Marinovich has served on the Regional Planning Commission for three years. His efforts helped secure funding for the new East Pointe a la Hache courthouse, for the parish port and for coastal wetland projects. He also helped secure a 3.1 million dollar shoreline marsh and stabilization program, a 3.2 million dollar sewage repair project and new sidewalks in his district. He also

was instrumental in the raising of Highway 23 in the Myrtle Grove area in 2012-13.

Marinovich says his plans are to continue working to improve the parish. Two projects he’s especially proud of is the new Visitor’s Center and Museum now under construction in Empire close to Fort Jackson and a nearby ATV track planned for the parish.

Words to GROW by!AUGUST – BUSY MONTH FOR

LOUISIANA GARDENERSAugust is a busy month for Louisiana home gardeners. It is the beginning for the fall planting season, and some summer crops still are going strong.

Several crops will still be going and should be protected from pests and nurtured with water and side-dressed fertilizer. Crops commonly carried over include okra, peppers, many of the vine crops and southern peas.

Tall okra plants should be pruned back 2-3 feet and fertilized to encourage a new flush of growth closer to the ground.

Stake or cage tall and bushy peppers to support their weak branches and to maintain production.

As for other areas of the garden, August is a good time to clean out weeds and to consider fall planting.

If some parts of the garden are out of production and full of perennial weeds, you may choose to use a herbicide containing glyphosate to kill these weeds. Spray these areas when growing conditions are good, and allow the weeds at least 10 days to take up the herbicide before turning the soil.

To get more production out of the garden this year, transplant tomatoes and bell peppers in South Louisiana, but they need to be planted as soon as possible.

Seed or transplants of broccoli and cauliflower can be planted now. Other crops commonly seeded in August are cabbage, Chinese cabbage, collards, pumpkins, snap and lima beans, shallots, southern peas, greens and Swiss chard, cucumbers, squash, Brussels sprouts and Irish potatoes.

As you see, it’s going to be a busy month for Louisiana gardeners. But get your crops planted early enough to enjoy their full production before the first frost ends the season.

ALGEA, LICHENS, MOSSESBOTHERSOME ON PLANTS

Algae, lichens and mosses grow profusely on trunks, limbs and twigs of many trees and shrubs. Cloudy, wet weather in Louisiana is ideal for growth of these organisms.

Algae are the simplest of green plants. They were probably the first food-producing organisms to live on earth.

Algae are present nearly everywhere and are numerous almost any place that has sufficient moisture, such as on tree trunks and twigs, shrubs, soil, rocks and walls, as well as in fresh and salt water.

In large numbers, algae forms as “scum” on ponds or as a green or red stain on the ground or on trees and walls.

Lichens have two components—a fungus and an algae living in association with one another to give the appearance of a single plant. Lichens grow on soil, trunks and branches of trees and shrubs, and on rock. Rarely are they found in water. They occur in several forms.

Some lichens are leaf-like; others resemble a tuft of horse hair hanging from the branches, and others are crusty. They are usually grayish-green.

With stems and foliage, mosses have developed further into miniature plants. They also can manufacture their own food. Mosses occur on soil, tree trunks and branches, rocks and in water. Liverworts are closely rated to the mosses and grow under similar conditions.

Since all of these primitive plants contain chlorophyll and make their own food, they do not directly injure the plant on which they grow. Heavy growth, however, may have a “suffocating” effect and can reduce the sunlight reaching the leaves.

Some people like the hitchhiking plants because they add a bit of color to the landscape during the winter. At times, however, the growth becomes objectionable or unsightly, and it is desirable to control.

The presence of algae, lichens and mosses on plants often is an indication that the plant has poor vigor and is growing slowly. Check drainage around plants with excessive numbers of free-loading organisms. Also, check for poor soil fertility.

The presence of algae may indicate too much fertility and wet areas in the landscape.

To control these pests, consider the following:

1.Copper fungicides can be applied to the trees or shrubs to control lichens. Check manufacturer’s label to see if it can be used on the plants in question.

2.Solutions containing two tablespoons of five percent household bleach per gallon of water can be sprayed on algae. Wash off the chlorine solution after five to 10 minutes. DO NOT apply household bleach to flowers or succulent plants.

3.Mosses often are more difficult to control. Usually, trimming overhanging branches to let some sunlight through will stop their growth.

Each week of summer camp brings a new and exciting themed week for our campers and recently it just so happened to be “Holiday Week”. On Wednesday, July 16, the holiday was Christmas and the mood was joyful as kids, seniors and Santa filled the Buras Y community room. The campers invited the members of the Boothville-Venice Council on Aging as well as their grandparents to join them for eggs, sausage, biscuits and more! The campers were very attentive while serving the more mature crowd and even sang “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer” for entertainment.

It was the first time the Boothville-Venice Council on Aging group made a trip to the Buras Y post-Katrina as they were regulars at the facility years prior. Several participants commented on how great it was to see the interaction between the many generations in the room, which included some third generation families. And after speaking with the seniors, Buras Y staff learned that many of the active older adults were interested in making a venture to the facility more often. Santa must have been listening, because shortly after the group’s stopover, Y staff received a call from the Boothville-Venice Council on Aging coordinator solidifying bi-weekly trips to take fitness classes at the Y.

Christmas in July brought the Buras Y more gifts than we thought imaginable. Our campers spent some much needed, often overlooked time with their grandparents and folks of an older generation, while the seniors gained a long-term welcoming place to mingle and stay active. We can’t wait to see what exciting opportunities the next year brings for our community members of all ages!
