All plants grow from seeds. A bean is the part of the plant that holds the seeds.

Types of Seeds

Parts of a Seed

When the seed bursts open, roots begin to grow in the soil.

The bean seed is covered in a hard outer shell. When water is added to the seed, it swells and the seed bursts open.

As the roots grow, a stem will also appear. The bean uses the food in the seed to grow.

Leaves will grow on the stem and stretch towards the light.

Flowers on the bean plant produce pods. Pods have seeds inside.

The bean seed is the part of the plant that is eaten.

Can you think of a plant that you eat?
