Abstract

This research paper presents improvements on production processes and layouts of a particle board

furniture manufacturing facility. The made-to-order factory under study had experienced three principal deficiencies: 1) periodic shutdowns due to seasonal floods, 2) production backlogs owing to

incompetency of the material handling systems and 3) inadequacy of the production area corresponding

to the ever-increasing demands and planned acquisition of equipment. After thorough study using the SLP technique, a layout is conceptualized and a detailed design is subsequently accomplished. In

addition to the survival from the great flood in 2011 by 50 centimeters through the levitation the floor

area, a 25% increase in output is observed as a result of rectification and simplification of the material handling system while another 30% is gained from the proposed layout. In all, both the proposed material

handling system and layout, as almost always the case, contribute to the significant improvement.
