plant fertilization- Invented by nature
Experience nature
Why does my aquarium need CO2?
fertilization - Invented by nature
All plants need carbon dioxide (CO2) in order to grow and survive. They produce their most important building material - sugar - fromCO2, water and light. All animals require oxygen, which occurs asa "waste product", in order to breathe. This process – which isknown as photosynthesis – is the basis for all life on our planet.Aquatic plants use the CO2 which is dissolved in water. A constantsupply of CO2 is forthcoming from the thick bed of mud which is usually to be found in natural waters. It is produced in large quantities here as a result of bacterial degradation processes. Thestrong and healthy plants which exist in nature are the result of thisrich supply. And lush plant growth supplies fish with oxygen whilealso offering them places to hide and spawn.
Aquarium water is nearly always deficient in CO2. Natural CO2 hasalready been removed from the water which flows out of our taps atthe waterworks, by means of aeration. The aquatic plants hungrilydevour the minimal quantities which exist in the aquarium. The available supply is usually insufficient. As a result, stems and leavesappear weak and pale, with no sign of growing power. The plants’resistance is weakened, algae settle on the leaves. In contrast to natural environments, the natural source of supply is lacking in aquaria. But who wants a centimetres-thick layer of sludge consistingof dead leaves, fish excrement and food residues in their aquarium?
Magnificentplants, healthy fish – with CO2!
Without CO2! With CO2!

CO2 deficiencyhas serious consequences
CO2 fertilizationhas many otheradvantages
• Stunted and crooked growth• Sudden plant death• Lime deposits on leaves• Much too high, unnatural pH values This results in stress for fish
and an increased susceptibility to disease• Iron and trace element deficiency• Sudden ammonia poisoning• Algae infestations
• Part of the CO2 which dissolves in water forms carbonic acid. This means that CO2 can be used to lower the pH value (acidcontent) of the aquarium water slightly, to levels similar to thosewhich prevail in nature.
• Aquarium fish are particularly fond of slightly acidic water. Ithas a positive effect on their sensitive skin.
• Trace elements which are important for plants and fish are takenin more effectively, as they are more readily soluble in theslightly acidic pH range.
• Unsightly lime deposits are avoided on plant leaves ("biogenicdecalcification").
The required supply of CO2 depends on thetype of aquariumHigher requirement Lower requirement
Higher requirement Lower requirementLarge aquarium Small aquariumOpen aquarium Covered aquariumLarge surface area/ Small surface area/volume ratio volume ratioPlenty of light Minimal lightMany plants Few plantsFast-running filter Slow-running filterHigh level of water movement Low level of water movementAdditional aeration Without aeration
In aquaria with flourishing aquatic plants, troublesome algae have practicallyno chance. Nutrients conducive to algae growth, such as phosphates and nitrates, are "absorbed" immediately by the plants. Plant growth starts to flagwhen CO2 is lacking, however. Surplus nutrients are no longer consumedquickly enough and algae are able to flourish. That’s why a good stock of plants and regular CO2 fertilization are among themost important measures to prevent algae.

CO2 sets for nano aquaria
Which is the right CO2 system for me?
4
Various systems are available to supply anaquarium with CO2. These differ with regard to the source of CO2.
Dennerle offers complete sets and accessories for all systems
BIO-CO2 - the simple means of CO2 fertilization
DISPOSABLEsystem the practical means ofCO2 fertilization
REUSABLE system the sustainable meansof CO2 fertilization
There are two basic categories of system:
1. Bio CO2 systems: Here the CO2 is generated by means of yeast fermentation, and
2. CO2 systems with liquefied gas, which come in disposable and reusable variants
CO2 production on the basis of controlled and constant yeast fermentation. Ideal for all those who are unfamiliar with CO2 fertili-zation and anyone wishing to try the method out. After only a fewweeks of CO2 fertilization, the results become evident: Plant growthimproves substantially, the plants appear greener, stronger and display greater vitality. The whole aquarium is brought to life.
CO2 supply by means of liquefied gas in a recyclable disposable cylinder. Ideal whenever replenishing CO2 cylinders is awkward orthe nearest CO2 filling service is far away.
CO2 supply by means of liquefied gas in a refillable, reusable cylinder. Particularly suitable for very large aquaria and aquariawith a high CO2 requirement. Dennerle offers reusable cylinders ofup to 2 kg for such applications.
Even the smallest aquaria need CO2. Dennerle offers solutions here which are tailored specifically to the requirements of mini aquaria.
How do CO2 systems work? - Bio-CO2
5
What is needed in orderto set up a CO2 supply foran aquarium?
The essential mode of functioning: A solution containing sugar isfermented in a fermentation container by means of yeast. CO2 isproduced as a by-product of this fermentation process. This CO2 isconveyed via a CO2 hose to the bubble counter, then on to the diffusor and into the aquarium. This method of CO2 supply is only suitable for aquaria with a volume of up to approx. 120 litres, however.
Uniform CO2 production with CO2 control gel.A fermentation process with pure sugar normally begins at a very fast pace, only to drop away sub-stantially after just a few days. As a result, the aquarium receives too much CO2 at the beginning, and too little shortly after. In contrast, Dennerle Bio CO2 with CO2 control gel produces a virtuallyconstant level of CO2 continuously for over 30 days, that is, for more than a month! Each CO2 bottleproduces well over 300,000 CO2 bubbles. This assures your aquarium of an ideal supply of CO2every day. Nothing needs to be set or measured. The ultimate in simplicity and convenience.

What is needed inorder to set up aCO2 supply for anaquarium?
Additional accessories are availablefor monitoring and automatic controlof the amount of CO2 supplied
The CO2 cylinder may take the form of • a disposable cylinder for nanoaquaria
• a practical and convenient disposable Dennerle CO2cylinder or
• the classic refillable, reusableCO2 cylinder.
This is the core element of everyCO2 fertilizer system. The pressurereducer determines how simply andaccurately the desired amount ofCO2 to be supplied - the number ofCO2 bubbles - can be set and howconsistently and reliably the systemwill run in the long term.
The special Softflex CO2 hosefrom Dennerle prevents the CO2losses which are typical of conventio-nal hoses.

...ensures that the CO2 is dissolvedquickly and effectively in the aqua-rium. Because plants can only usethe CO2 when it is dissolved in thewater. The Dennerle Flipper isone of the most effective diffusors,as the CO2 bubbles pass through amulti-stage system here, ensuringthat they have plenty of time to dissolve in the water. The Flipperadditionally features an integratedbubble-counting function and an automatic waste gas vent.

Waste gas ventEvery time a CO2 bubble dissolves in the water, it is penetrated byother gases (e.g. nitrogen) which are naturally present in the aquarium water in dissolved form. Consequently, all Dennerle CO2diffusors feature a waste gas vent, designed in each case for thesystem concerned. Here the waste gases are separated from thesubstantially heavier CO2 and discharged automatically at regularintervals. This effectively prevents the equipment from becoming"choked up" with waste gas. As a result, Dennerle CO2 diffusorsoperate highly effectively. The best possible use is made of the valuable CO2.

The CO2 long-term test Correct offers the simplest meansof CO2 monitoring. A "green" reading indicates that the level ofCO2 in the aquarium water is ideal.
For disposable and reusable sys-tems, the Dennerle CO2 solenoidvalve provides the option of shut-ting down the supply of CO2 atnight by means of a time switch, asplants do not consume any CO2 atnight. This saves valuable CO2.
The Evolution DeLuxe pH controller is available from Den-nerle for high-tech aquarium enthu-siasts. This controller continuouslymeasures the pH value in the aquarium and controls the neces-sary supply of CO2 fully automatic-ally. It supplies just enough CO2 tomaintain the set level at all times.

The latest generation of Dennerle pressure reducers
Precision and safety
The tiny quantities of CO2 involved in fertilizing plants call for extremely precise dosing. Dennerle's newly developed pressure reducers of the Evolution range, comprising Primus, Quantum andSpace, offer cutting-edge technology here. Apart from featuring totally new materials which allow for a more precise productionprocess, the pressure reducers also operate according to a newmode of functioning.
Safety aspects have also received full consideration, with all pres-sure reducers featuring an automatic pressure relief device and asafety vent.
The key feature common to all variants is the innovative Dynamic Valve Control (DVC) technology. This carefully coordinated system of pistons, springs, bores, pressure compensation chambers and valves offers two crucial advantages:
1. The pressure reducers can be adjusted with unprecedented ease and precision by means of a single setting knob.
2. Once set, the supplied quantity of CO2 (number of bubbles) remains stable over a long period.

Info Even when using CO2 diffusors with an integrated bubble counter, itis nevertheless extremely practical to install an additional bubble counter close to the pressure reducer. This enables the number of bubbles to be set more simply, quickly and exactly. A separate bubble counter is urgently recommended when using CO2 diffusers without a built-in bubblecounter and diffusors which are hidden behind plants or rocks in the aquarium.

What CO2 diffusers are available?
Virtually all Dennerle CO2 system components are based on in-house developments – drawing on practical experience to meet practical needs. Every device hasbeen tested in extensive test series and developed in line with the special conditions which prevail inaquaria. Dennerle is able to draw on decades of experience in this field. As a result, Dennerle CO2components meet the very highest standards with regard to functionality, efficiency, quality of materials and service life.
Various diffusors are available for the most diverse applications andrequirements. The available options and areas of use are describedbelow.
Maximum efficiency: The CO2 FlippersHighly effective, compact CO2 diffusors. With CO2 collector andwaste gas vent. No motor required.
Mode of functioning: The CO2 supplied by the CO2 fertilizersystem is released from the opening at the bottom of the Flipper. TheCO2 bubbles then rise slowly along the channels in the Flipper. Asthe bubbles rise, the CO2 dissolves in the aquarium water - the bubbles thus become smaller as they progress towards the surfaceof the water. Waste gases are separated from any residual CO2 inthe collector and discharged automatically.

TIPThe bubble counter should ideally be installed in the direct vicinity of the pressure reducer. This has the advantage that any changes to the CO2 supply level will become visible on the bubblecounter immediately. To this end, the Dennerle CO2 bubble counter Exact is supplied with a strap - for direct attachment to the CO2 cylinder!
Why do I need a bubble counter?
CO2 bubble counter Exact
Rule of thumb for basic setting of the number of bubbles:10 bubbles per minute per 100 l of aquarium water. Example - 200 l aquarium: 2 x 10 = 20 bubblesper minute. If the Dennerle CO2 long-term test displays "green", the supply of CO2 is exactly right. If not: Increase the number of bubbles in small daily steps until the desired level of CO2 is attained.
Why do I need a check valve?
Special CO2 checkvalve
Info
Install the special CO2 check valve as closely as possible to the pressure reducer / the CO2 solenoidvalve - ideally at a distance of 5 to 10 cm. It is then easier to set the number of CO2 bubbles, as everyadjustment of the supply quantity is immediately recognisable on the bubble counter. Closure of theCO2 solenoid valve is also immediately evident.
TIP
Continuous, direct control of the CO2supply levelThe CO2 supply rate is measured in terms of the number of bubblesper minute. The Dennerle CO2 bubble counter Exact provides asimple and convenient means of setting the number of bubbles. Itcan be turned in the mounting bracket for optimum alignment. Thewhite reflector bracket enables precise counting of the bubbles evenin poor light conditions - e.g. in the base cabinet. Hose connectorswith screw fittings prevent CO2 leaks.
It reliably protects CO2 units frombackflowing waterCO2 is a special gas which has quite different physical properties toair. Dennerle has thus developed a special check valve for operationwith CO2. The core element is a special permanently elastic, CO2-proof membrane. It is fitted under tension, in firm contact with sea-ling rims. 2 hose connectors with screw fittings ensure CO2-proofconnection.
Special Softflex CO2 hose
Reliable protection from CO2 leaks.
Why are special CO2 hoses necessary?
Why do backflows of water occur in CO2 hoses? Figuratively speaking, CO2 is instinctively "driven" to dissolve in water whenever the opportunity arises. In the event of an interruption in the supply of CO2 to the aquarium (CO2 cylinder empty, cylinder valveclosed, CO2 solenoid valve active, etc.), the CO2 which is presently still in the hose will also dissolve inthe aquarium water. This causes a vacuum in the CO2 hose, drawing aquarium water into the hose. Thespecial CO2 check valve from Dennerle reliably protects your valuable items of CO2 equipment such asthe pressure reducer, CO2 cylinder and CO2 solenoid valve, etc. from backflowing water.
Special Softflex CO2 hose
Softflex is many times more leak-proof than conventional materials
Hose type Annual leakages
Special Softflex CO2 hose several grams
Standard PVC air hose several 100 grams
Silicone hose several 1000 grams
CO2 simply seeps through many hose materials. The special Softflex CO2 hose from Dennerle consists of a special CO2-proofplastic to ensure that valuable CO2 arrives where it is needed - inthe aquarium. The hose is able to withstand pressures of up to 7 barand is highly flexible to facilitate installation.

CO2 long-term test Correct + pH
How can I monitor the CO2content in my aquarium water?
How CO2, carbonate hardness and pH value are related
Adding CO2 acidifies the aquarium water slightly, lowering the pH value. This means that the pH valueneeds to be watched, to ensure that it does not drop too low. A three-way interrelationship exists bet-ween CO2 content, carbonate hardness and pH value. This enables the CO2 content in the water to becalculated on the basis of the measured carbonate hardness and the measured pH value. These measu-rements, in particular the measured pH value, must be very accurate, however, as the results will other-wise be unusable.
Special CO2 indicator for particularly simple and accurate CO2 controlConventional long-term CO2 tests are filled with a mixture of aquarium water and indicator. This involvesvarious disadvantages, one being that the acids which are present in all aquarium waters (e.g. humicacids, nitrate) can distort test results substantially. The Dennerle CO2 long-term test Correct employs a ready-to-use special CO2 indicator which is used onits own, rather than in a mixture with aquarium water. This offers the following key advantages:
Safety: The CO2 long-term test Correct measures the CO2 content and indicates the actual CO2content correctly at all times - irrespective of any other acids in the aquarium water.
Simplicity: No additional measurement of carbonate hardness is necessary. Only a single colour-mat-ching scale is required.
Accuracy: The CO2 long-term test Correct allows direct determination of the CO2 content in milligramsper litre. The test is equally efficient at low carbonate hardness levels.
Keeping tabs on CO2 at all times! For the continuous, exact control of CO2content in the aquariumThe CO2 long-term test Correct +pH provides a simple and reliablemeans of setting the required rate of CO2 supply. The colouring ofthe special CO2 indicator varies according to the CO2 content from • blue = not enough CO2 through • green = CO2 content ideal to • yellow = too much CO2.
Complete set with test container, special CO2 indicator and six-colour matching scale.
The CO2 long-term test Correct even allows you to monitor the pHvalue in your aquarium at the same time! Simply measure the carbonate hardness and read the pH value from the colour matchingscale.

pH controller Evolution Deluxe
TIPFor magnificent plant growth, Dennerle recommends a CO2 content in the aquarium of approx. 20 mg/l. The correlation between CO2 content, carbonate hardness (CH) and pH value enables theCO2 content in the water to be calculated according to a simple procedure:• Measure the carbonate hardness of your aquarium water.• Read the pH value which corresponds to the desired CO2 content from the table. You should set this
pH value +/- 0.1 by adjusting the number of bubbles accordingly. Example: Carbonate hardness 4 °d, recommended pH 6.8.
• The procedure is even simpler with the Dennerle CO2 long-term test Correct + pH.
