Decisive criterion: Surface qualityExtensive welding skills expertise

The use of material-compatible welding procedures for

processing non-corrosive stainless steels guarantees you

problem-free product use: our in-house welding tech-

nology for cutting, forming and joining is extensive.

Take advantage of our more than 60 years’ experience in

welding more than 85 stainless steels and clad materials.

We use all the current welding processes in production,

including plasma, TIG, MSG, SAW, laser beam and elec-

tron beam welding processes and even orbital, TIG hot

wire and MAG welding. Automated welding of circum-

ferential welds up to a diameter of 1 200 mm.

The individual production of the pipes and vessels is

done as solid manual work, our welding processes are

automated, as far as possible.

You can take advantage of our expertise:

• Approx. 1 900 welding procedure tests

• More than 300 welders tested and certified in

accordance with national and international regulati-

ons (DIN EN ISO and ASME IX).

• Approx. 1 200 current welding certificates

Decisive criterion: Surface quality

The bright metallic surface guarantees optimal corrosion

resistance and thus ensures product quality.

At BUTTING, pipes, components ready for installation

and vessels are always subjected to chemical cleaning

(pickling). This reliable, environmentally-friendly proce-

dure ensures lasting corrosion resistance after forming,

welding and annealing.

Our pickling equipment is designed to ensure the com-

plete surface treatment of products. All the pickling

baths and the removal of process waste water are cons-

tantly monitored.

In addition to the full body pickling or spray pickling, we

also offer you the following surface treatments:

• Grinding

• Raumatic surface finishing

• Glass bead blasting

• Shot peening

Recognised quality management

For more than 240 years, the name BUTTING has stood

for quality and reliability in metal processing. BUTTING’s

high product quality of all the processes is supported by

their reproducibility and a quality assurance department

with an accredited laboratory, recognised by indepen-

dent classification companies. We can arrange accep-

tance on an ex works basis, deliver your pipes ready for

laying and thus reduce the amount of checking that you

have to undertake on the construction site.

We check the performance of our machines and staff on

a permanent basis. The production results are evaluated

immediately, taking quality requirements into account.

We continuously monitor the quality of our longitudinal

and circumferential welds on video or in other ways while

welding takes place and we also carry out internal X-ray

and dye-penetrant tests.

In order to ensure that we meet project-specific

demands, a wide range of internal and external testing

equipment is available.

At BUTTING we use all the modern testing procedures:

• Non-destructive tests include:

− Digital and film X-ray examination

− Ultrasound test

− Water pressure testing

− Corrosion testing using helium leakage tests,

dye-penetrant tests and magnetic powder tests

• Destructive tests include:

Prefabricated BUTTING pipes

The prefabrication of pipes is a form of installation

moved forward into the production plant, using isometric

drawings, pipe plans or models. By directly processing

our pipe here at the plant, we optimise the quality of the

pipes and supply you with products ready-to-lay or ready

for installation at reasonable prices.

Your added value at BUTTING:

• Approved internal welding technology

• Detailed planning with 3 -D models, isometric

drawings and static calculations as a preliminary

test for micro projects

• Customer-related project documentation

• Accredited laboratory

• Logistically optimal services for international shipping

• Fast pre-material availability through own pipe

production

• Forming possibilities up to a wall thickness of 80 mm

• Reduction of site welding by up to 80 %

• Optimum pipe fit-up for site welding thanks to

special calibration options for the pipe ends

In short: prefabricated pipe parts guarantee you high

quality, speedy installation and cost reductions (invest-

ment and lifecycle costs)

A large number of sectors are impressed by our

high-quality products and the considerable poten-

tial savings on offer:

• The chemical and petrochemical industry

• The water and waste water industry

Prefabricated pipes – your benefits

The more welding and pickling is already performed on

BUTTING’s premises instead of on the construction site,

the greater the potential savings that can be achieved –

while at the same time reducing environmental damage

on the installation site. Workshop welds can be perfor-

med under optimal conditions. The maintenance, repair

and downtime costs of your system are reduced.

There are clear arguments in favour of prefabrication:

• Safety of materials, since differences are recognised

in good time

• Avoidance of mistakes involving incorrect materials

on the construction site

• Reduction in space requirement at the construction

site

• Reduction in construction site staffing through a

high degree of prefabrication

• Reduction of on-site installation time, because up to

70 % of the circumferential welding and up to 100 %

of the branch welding has already been performed

in the workshop

• Installation seams at BUTTING are determined by

experienced site managers

• Optimised product quality through pickling of the

entire, piping components ready for installation

• Increased planning security regarding the sche-

duled installation planning through timely prefabri-

cation in our plant, producing reliable quality

• Comprehensive know-how in packaging and trans-

portation direct to your construction site

• Errors in bills of materials are already revealed

during prefabrication

In short: Using prefabricated piping components reduces

the amount of welding and also the radioscopy required

on your construction site. We provide you with spools

ready for installation, including final documentation.

Prefabrication of pipes

Often the longitudinally welded BUTTING pipe is the

primary product and main component of prefabrica-

ted pipes. As a recognised pipe manufacturer, we can

provide both small and large quantities in our pipe

production from coil and plate steel. Thus we offer you

complete flexibility.

The use of high-quality raw materials, selected for the

project and the product, the pipes we manufacture

ourselves and our carefully chosen fittings, flanges and

special components guarantee you first-class workman-

ship - even with complex pipe systems.

We will satisfy the specific requirements of your project:

• Restricted tolerances

• Special sizes

• Processing of special materials

• Individual quality requirements

BUTTING invests continuously in its manufacturing

facilities. Based on our longstanding experience and

comprehensive craftsmanship, we always use state-of-

the-art technology. This guarantees reproducible product

15PLANT CONSTRUCTION

Prefabrication of pipes – your benefits

BUTTING has its own works construction departments

for designing complex components and vessels. This

puts us in a position to increase planning quality, shorten

project throughput times and reduce costs.

Our services guarantee you:

• Design of vessels and reactors as a preliminary test

• Better reaction speed on the construction site by

developing installation documentation

• Optimised disposition of materials through carefully

planned bills of materials

• Increased flexibility in adapting the isometric

drawings and bills of materials to the demands of a

project

• Security regarding the scheduled installation

planning through timely prefabrication in our plant,

producing reliable quality

We coordinate suitable production processes with the

customer. In order to optimise quality, welded joints at

the installation site can be minimised, for example by

integrated bending instead of welding in of elbows.

Clad spools ready for installation

In order to optimise the quality of the pipeline and to

reduce costs we process clad pipes directly into spools

ready for installation. For this purpose we use clad semi-

finished products, like weld-clad flanges, elbows, tees

and reducers. The corrosion resistant layer is subjec-

ted to pickling and passivation at the works, as well as

non-destructive testing according to the relevant speci-

fications. Thus, potential savings with regard to the instal-

lation time on site later are achieved.

Advantages of clad spools and components ready for

installation:

• Use of high quality semi-finished products made by

BUTTING

• High degree of automation and high reproducibility

• First class manufacturing quality, among others

through a continuous quality assurance

• Minimisation of welds and installation times on site

Production of vessels, tanks and apparatus

BUTTING manufactures vessels, equipment, large tanks

and columns in multiple pieces or in one piece in line

with customer specifications.

Thus vessels in sizes from around

• 40 m in length,

• 6 m in diameter,

• and 60 t in weight

have been manufactured in one piece.

Segmented construction is on offer for specific local

situations. We manufacture the vessel using state-of-the-

art technology under ideal production conditions.

We dismantle it into the largest sections possible for

transport and optimal on-site installation. Thus we trans-

fer workshop quality and the benefit of short installation

times to the construction site.

If construction in one piece or segmented construction

is not possible, for example in the construction of large

tanks, we supply precisely cut and formed materials to

the construction site. These are assembled and welded

by our experienced installation teams.

Our tried and tested welding processes are:

• Plasma

• TIG

• MIG

• MAG

• SAW

Supervising around the world

For decades, BUTTING has been demonstrating its abi-

lity in monitoring installation work and supervising pro-

jects all over the world. In addition to cultural differences

and linguistic barriers, the different technical abilities of

the skilled workers in the guest countries is the principal

factor that makes work more difficult there. We therefore

represent the interests of our customers on a number of

construction sites of the pulp and paper industry.

• Choosing appropriate installation companies

• Induction of employees in the processing of stain-

less steel

• Performance of welding training sessions

• Expert construction site supervision for pipe and

vessel installation work

• Deadline monitoring for installation work

• Control of the qualitative design and execution

In addition to a competitive price, we convince people

through our experience in technical completion work,

our flexibility and professionalism, as was shown in the

following projects, for example:

• Voith, Hainan, China: Monitoring of the fitting of

16 pulper machines weighing a total of around 450 t

• Mondi, Syktyvkar/Russia: 7 outward-facing

vessels/reactors for a pulp and paper plant

• Glatz, Vietnam: Supervising piping installation

• Metso Paper, Amcor/Australia: Supervising vessel

installation

• Wenrui, Indonesia: Supervising piping installation

• The Metso Paper Karlstad project, SCA Mexico

PM 1: Prefabrication and installation supervision for

all vessels and towers

• Sugar Factory Nigeria

• Valmet Algeria: Vessel installation

• Metso Paper Ngodwana, South Africa: Vessel

installation

• Metso Paper Bratsk Russia: Vessel installation

BUTTING: The parent plant in Knesebeck/Germany

BUTTING is deeply rooted in Knesebeck, in the district

of Gifhorn, Lower Saxony. Since 1945, this is BUTTING’s

parent plant. We have grown continuously on that site

since then. On the works site, which now comprises

more than 530 000 m², more than 60 000 t of stainless

steel and clad steel are processed each year.

Today, BUTTING in Knesebeck is one of the largest

employers of the region. More than 1 300 employees

work at the plant in Knesebeck, and just under 100 app-

rentices are continually trained in 11 different trades.

The focus of the activities in Knesebeck lies in manufac-

turing longitudinally welded pipes from coils and plate,

processing into pipe components ready to be installed

as part of comprehensive prefabrication capacities, and

in the production of special vessels.

BUTTING in China

BUTTING/ China manufactures in Tieling, mainly for

the Chinese market. A number of projects and package

projects have been produced jointly by BUTTING in Ger-

many and in China, taking advantage of synergy effects.

There are economic arguments in favour of BUTTING

China. On the one hand our customers receive tried-and-

tested BUTTING quality as a result of the good techni-

cal performance of our Chinese employees. They are

trained, inducted and monitored by BUTTING staff from

Schwedt who are always on-site. On the other hand, the

moderate price level is an argument in favour of carrying

out the work directly in China.

In Tieling, we use a production hall of more than

6 000 m² which is equipped with comprehensive pro-

duction facilities for vessel and plant construction.

For the production of thin-walled vessels in standing

positions, the hall has a crane height of 18 m.
