Joanne Perry AS Media Studies Planning Document The target audience for my website of Anorexia is older teenage girls. Anorexia affects both males and females in all age groups, but the disorder is most common in teenagers and young adults. Therefore, I decided through the use of my website, the target audience would be best suited for older teenagers as statistics show that older teenagers are most likely to develop an eating disorder, more so than any other age group. Males make up about 10 to 15 percent of those who suffer from anorexia. Therefore, due to this low percentage, I wanted to aim my product more at girls in order to have an increasingly large target audience and focus more on one specific gender in order to directly appeal to a specific group of people. Teens and young adults between the ages of 12 and 26 make up 95 percent of those who have eating disorders, due to this fact, I decided to aim my target audience at teenagers as they are the main and specific people who are most likely to suffer and therefore, view my product. I will appeal to this specified target audience of teenage girls through the use of colour, language, font and people featured on the website. Through the use of colour, I want to ensure that the website I create contains dark colours in order to give off a serious tone. This will show to the audience that the website is professional and assertive. I also want to include some light tones such as through the use of text, images etc. This will give off the sense of verisimilitude as the dark background will represent what a person with an eating disorder is feeling as dark colours represent sadness whereas the light colours will show how they may appear to people who cannot tell what is going on with them inside their heads. The light colours will also represent recovery which will make the viewers of the website feel as though the website will help them and increase their happiness in the long run. The use of language will appeal to the target audience as due to my target audience being teenage girls, I can enforce synthetic sisterhood to ensure that the language is appropriate and fitting for the target audience. Through the use of synthetic sisterhood, I

The light colours will also represent recovery which will make the viewers of the website feel as though the website will help them and increase their happiness in the long run.The use of language will appeal to the target audience as due to my target audience being teenage girls, I can enforce synthetic sisterhood to ensure that the language is appropriate and fitting for the target audience. Through the use of synthetic sisterhood, I can produce the language represented on my website as sisterly in order to give off to the audience the feelings of security. This will make the viewers feel safe whilst on the website and will also ensure that the language is appropriately fitting to the specified target audience. The font used to present the language is also important as the font can easily represent the target audience for example; an older woman is not going to want to read further onto a website with child-like, handwritten font. Therefore, to meet the needs of my target audience, the font has to be serious, assertive and interesting. I want the font to be serious and assertive in order for the target audience to identify themselves and have a feeling of belonging on the website and realise the importance of the information to ensure that they want to read further. However, the font must be interesting in order for the audience to feel as though their illness is of great importance and must be clearly understood and addressed in order for a person to recover. The font and language will also give off the tone of the website to be serious and assertive in order for the audience to feel as though it is a serious issue and will see clearly the effects the illness can have on their lives. This will increase the chances of the audience getting the help they need. The type of people featured on the website is also a great importance as they have to be people who the audience can relate to in order for the website to be affective. The star system can be used in order to represent to the audience a real role model and celebrity who has suffered through the same illness in order to make the audience feel as though they are not alone and how it can happen to many people globally. For my website I am going to use Demi Lovato as a celebrity who the audience can relate to her and her story as she has been through the same illness, therefore I will use the star system to endorse this. I will also use intertextuality through the character of Cassie from the show Skins in order to represent a character in a show who has suffered the same illness. I will use this character and her verisimilitude actions to a person with an eating disorder, in a video I will create to represent intertextuality between the character, Cassie and a person featured in my video. Both Demi Lovato and Cassie are/were teenagers when the eating disorder occurred and therefore this will represent the target audience of teenage girls through a verisimilitude perspective on a real life celebrity and a character in which people will recognise. The website will be aimed at the people affected by the illness as this will enhance their knowledge and understanding through the use of the website in order to make them more aware of the illness. The layout of the website is very important as the website must follow the rule of thirds in order to appeal to the eye of the audience and make them want to continue further. The first thing that the audience will see when on the website will be the logo and title. This is due to them being placed at the very top of the page, bold and eye-catching through the various uses of colours and font in order for the audience to recognise them as the brand image of the product, the rule of thirds will be used through the use of the logo and title and therefore they will immediately be identified as the first thing the audience will see on the website and the language will be mesmerising and engaging in order for the audience to immediately feel intrigued and safe whilst on the website. Moreover, the last things that the audience will see on the website will be the copyright certification directed at the bottom of the website in small font, however is still recognisable to the audience. This will represent the website to be more professional and reliable in the audiences eye as they will recognise the small printed text as a convention from other professional websites. Therefore this will endorse the website further as more people will recognise the professional conventions and feel safer on the website as it is a website which people can share how they are feeling and talk to others. I am including a variety of features on my website to present anorexia. Firstly, I will be including a video on my website. This will ensure that my website is more informative and entertaining through the use of the video. By creating a video, I can represent anorexia in a more verisimilitude way through actors using intertextuality in order to represent the illness to be as serious as possible. A video will also ensure that more people can relate to it as they will recognise various symptoms within the video. This will have a more emotional impact on the audience and may convince the audience to get the help they need as the will be able to identify themselves as a character in the video. In order to use intertextuality within my video I will refer it to previous, recognisable anorexia scenarios. I will do this by using clips of the character Cassie from Skins as she suffered from an eating disorder. I will further contrast these clips to use my own actors in my video to use similar elements from particular scenes in the show Skins to represent intertextuality with one of my own actors to Cassie. I may also use intertextuality to represent Demi Lovato and how she suffered, referring to her music video for Skyscraper as she confessed that the song is about her suffering. This will engage the audience further as it will feel more personal and recognisable as though to represent the illness to be common and as serious as possible.Another feature I will include on my website will be a minimum of 4 of my own images. The images will ensure audience identification as people who are suffering the illness will be able to recognise some of the images to show how the audience is also feeling. The images are also used to be attractive and represent the images in a verisimilitude perspective. The images will describe what the website is about without people having to read further. Therefore, if the audience feel that they can relate to the images and recognise the illness, they will read and look further onto the website. I want the images to be eye catching and very alerting to the audience. I also want the audience to see themselves in the images in order for them to be effective so that the audience will take action on the website and get the help they need. Moreover, text will be used as a feature on my website in order to inform people about the illness and for people to read all of the information they need. The text creates the brand image and personality of the website. An example of this would be through the use of synthetic sisterhood. Due to my target audience being teenage girls, I want the text to look serious in order to represent the seriousness of the website therefore the text should be formal and regular, everyday text which people will recognise. However, I also do not want the target audience to lose interest; therefore I want the text to be irregular in order for the audience to take more interest in the text. The text represents the brand image and personality due to the assertiveness of the text. The way in which the text is written, will depend on the target audience. As previously mentioned, I am going to use synthetic sisterhood in order to represent a caring and appealing text to the audience so that they will take as much interest as possible in the website and feel secure whilst visiting. Finally, I will use sound within my website in order to make my website as appealing and conventional as possible. The more conventions used on a website the better. Not every website uses sound however, in my opinion, the websites that do include some use of sound, are the most interesting and appealing websites which will intrigue the audience further and ensure that it is mesmerising. Therefore, I have chosen to use this feature on my website in order to intrigue the audience as much as I can and include as many features as possible in order to make my website more successful. I will not use sound on every page however I may choose to use sound for someones story in order to make it more dramatic and serious, in order for the audience to recognise a persons story and to make it more convincing for the audience to get the help they need.
