Orbit and Rotation

• It takes 686.98 days for Mars to orbit the sun

• It takes 24 hours and 37 minutes for mars to rotate on its axis

Atmosphere

• Atmosphere is very thin

Made up of:• 95% Carbon Dioxide• 3% Nitrogen• 1.6% Argon

• There is no oxygen in Mars’ atmosphere

Temperature

• Temperature range: 150-310 K (-125˚F to 23˚F)

• Mars is much colder than Earth.• The temperatures on Mars are also much colder

than temperatures in Florida.

Composition/Appearance

• Mars is very rocky

• Internal Composition: Core, Mantel, Crust

• Mars is small, much smaller than Earth. It is red and sometimes has black splotches on it.

WeatherDifferent types of weather on Mars include:

• Severe Coldness• Violent Storms• Dust Storms• Strong Wind• Climate Changes

Mars has 4 distinct seasons like EarthMars does not have any rings

Moons- Phobos• Mars has 2 moons, Phobos and Deimos

• Phobos is the bigger moon• Phobos has an 8 hour orbital period• Named after the Greek god Phobos• Discovered on 7/12/1877

Moons- Deimos

• Deimos is smaller than Phobos

• Deimos has a 30 hour orbital period

• Further away from Mars than Phobos

• Discovered on 7/12/1877

Water

• There is ice and polar ice caps on Mars

• It is too cold for liquid water to exist on Mars

• Scientists believe that there was once liquid

water on Mars

What would happen if a persontraveled to Mars?

• Immediately the person would die due to the extremely low pressure on Mars.

• A person could also freeze due to Mars’s low temperatures

Something Special?

Mars has the largest and most violent dust storms in the entire solar system. These storms

often have winds topping 125 mph. They can last for weeks and can cover the entire planet. They usually occur when Mars is closest to the

sun.
