RATIONALE FOR HYBRID I I LEARNING

Since releasing our Campus COVID-19 Safety Guide on July 17th, our COVID Taskforce and a collection of faculty and staff have continued to work diligently to evaluate the local landscape of the COVID-19 cases, recommendations of local and state Health Department officials, as well as the questions, concerns and input of our BK community. Due to the continuing climb in cases and the campus limitations on space for social distancing, we had made the decision to open campus on August 11th in the Hybrid II Learning Model.

For the first three weeks of the school year, we will employ the Hybrid II Learning Model to reduce the student interaction and exposure on campus by limiting physical presence to 50% capacity. This will also allow our students, faculty, and staff to acclimate to the new and heightened safety protocols and implement the necessary social distancing practices. We will reevaluate on August 28th with the hope of resuming full in-person classes in the Open Campus Model for the week of August 31st.

Our COVID Taskforce will continue to monitor the COVID-19 cases in the Tulsa Metro area and the number of active cases within the BK community and receive recommendation from the Tulsa Health Department to determine an appropriate time for all students to return for the Open Campus Model. It is our goal for all students to return to campus for full time in-person instruction as quickly, but more importantly, as safely as possible.

EXPLORING THE HYBRID I I MODELIn all three Hybrid Learning Models, student presence on campus is restricted to 50% capacity with limited student interactions in hallways and common areas and enforced social distancing measures. Bishop Kelley will begin the school year in the Hybrid II Model which mixes in-person instruction with Distance Learning, alternating between the two learning environments on different days of the week. Students will be split into two (2) student groups; Cohort A and Cohort B. Students, parents and guardians will receive their assigned Cohort in an individualized email sent no later than Wednesday August 5th.

Cohort A will attend in-person classes every Monday and Thursday, while Cohort B will attend class every Tuesday and Friday. Wednesdays will be reserved for Distance Learning for both student groups. Classrooms and desks will be arranged according to social distancing protocols as space allows. Masks continue to be required for all students, faculty and staff. Each day classrooms will be sanitized and prepared for the next Cohort.

Families still may opt for Distance Learning for their students for a variety of reasons including concerns about high-risk vectoring or in cases of mandated quarantine. Bishop Kelley has designed the following form to facilitate the Distance Learning option and streamline communication between families and the school. This request form must be completed for any student who plans to utilize the Distance Learning Option for more than two consecutive school days. If you would like to register for this option, please complete the Distance Learning Request Form here.

HYBRID I I STUDENT EXPECTATIONS

While the Hybrid II model is being implemented, Bishop Kelley students are still expected to abide by the code of ethics as outlined in the Parent Student Handbook.

During their on-campus instruction days, students are expected to be on campus for the start of the school day, unless they have completed the Distance Learning Request Form. Students in Distance Learning are expected to be in their Google meets for each class by the posted start time.

Bishop Kelley students are expected to follow the Dress Code guidelines for both in-person classes and Distance Learning. All students should follow the Bishop Kelley Google Meet and Google Classroom Guidelines which will spell out specific expectations and will be linked in the Cohort announcement email which will go out to students, parents and guardians this week no later than Wednesday August 5th.

Masks / Face Coverings must be:

✓ Comfortable but fit snugly to one’s face/chin

✓ Allow for breathing without restriction

✓ Made of a tightly woven fabric material such as cotton

✓ Include multiple layers of fabric (2 or more)

✓ Secured by ties or ear loops

✓ Able to be laundered without altering the shape or integrity

✓ In accordance with free dress code policies

Masks / Face Coverings are not a substitute for social distancing measures. Continue to maintain a distance of six feet or more in the presence of others, even while wearing a mask/face covering.

MASKS AND FACE COVERINGS

Regardless of the learning model in place, all students, faculty and staff will be required to wear a mask when on Bishop Kelley’s campus. All BK Students, Faculty and Staff will receive one (1) complimentary BK branded face covering to be distributed on the first day of school, Tuesday, August 11th, during the first block. Students will need to arrive on campus with their own mask or face covering on their first day of in-school learning.

Students will be permitted to wear either the BK face covering or another of their choosing as long as it meets the above standards. Additional BK branded face coverings will be available for purchase in the Spirit Store.

COMETS ATHLETICS DURING SCHOOLBishop Kelley has developed thoughtful plans for both Hybrid II and Distance Learning models that will allow us to attempt to continue scholastic athletics. Our department has developed a plan that focuses on distinct, vital portions of our mission. While conducting our school year activities, we will: 1. Make every effort to ensure the safety and well-being of our student-athletes,

coaches, and staff. 2. Proceed with a conservative approach toward athletic program related activities to

eliminate opportunities for direct contact. 3. Use athletics as a platform for education in a dynamic environment. 4. Willingly adapt and pivot on a daily basis to meet the needs of the community.People who live in the world of athletics understand best the need for resiliency, discipline, perspective, and a spirit of optimism during times of uncertainty and doubt. This year will be a tremendous opportunity to demonstrate those qualities.

In the Hybrid II learning environment, 50% of the student body will be on campus during a regularly scheduled school day. Bishop Kelley has made every effort to put members of each in-season team in the same A/B Cohort to ensure that they are on the same track. For in-season sports (in the block), practice may begin as early as possible during the school day.

On “in-school” days, the athletes will practice as usual during the block. 1st-block sports may begin scheduled practice before school, leading into the block. 4th-block sports may begin during the block, finishing after the regularly-scheduled school day. On “Distance Learning” days, the athletes will practice at times adjusted for them to either reach their virtual 2nd-block class (1st-block athletics) or arrive on campus after their 3rd-block class (4th-block athletics). More direction will be forthcoming on this arrangement from Mr. Pratt as we work through the nuances of the Hybrid II and Distance Learning models.

For the beginning of school, in-season sports (Fall) will be the only programs allowed to engage in activities. This will allow us to limit contact, and it will allow the students to adjust to a significantly different environment for the first few weeks of school.

COMMIT TED TO OUR MISSIONBishop Kelley is more than just our classrooms, everyday our mission calls us to reach beyond these walls and prepare for a purposeful life of Catholic excellence. During this time, our guiding principles come from our commitment to the spiritual and academic formation of our students. No matter the learning model or physical environment; Bishop Kelley’s mission, values and commitment to serving our students and building up the community will not waiver.

As a Life Preparatory school, we must be equipped to adapt to the unexpected developments life poses in a dynamic way. This year will undoubtably require our community to come together like never before, but we are up to the task. Together we are family, forever we are Comets.

Let our self-discipline and sacrifice be an act of charity for the health of the larger community and those who are vulnerable, and a helping hand to those who have been working tirelessly to bring this pandemic to an end.

Thank you for your encouragement these past weeks and for your continued flexibility as we navigate these challenging waters.
