The Borough of Emmaus and local community members are looking to 3rd grade students at Jefferson Elementary to help plan, design, and build a new and improved playground at Lion’s Park! The town is allowing each group to use one acre of land to plan their playground. In addition, they are providing you with a budget of $15,000 to purchase materials to build your model! Kids know playgrounds best! Decide what is most exciting, creative, safe, and within your budget! Have fun planning, designing, problem-solving, and discovering new ideas along the way!

Accountants - Get ready to watch that budget! Engineers - Put on your “design hat” and get ready to build

those models! Project Managers - Be prepared to keep everyone on task,

make decisions, and problem-solve

Step 1 - Plan Identify what you already know about

perimeter and area. Measure the perimeter of your playground

(pizza box) to the nearest inch. Using your measurements, draw the

geometric shape of the playground (pizza box) on graph paper, and clearly label the perimeter and area.

Ask an adult to check you work before moving on to Step 2!

Step 2 - Plan/Budget/Sketch

As a group, look at the options available for your playground.

Decide which items are most important for your team to have in your new playground, and what meets your budget!

Engineers/Project Managers - determine what things may or may not “fit” in your design, and start sketching them onto your graph paper within your area.

Accountants - start working the $ - on the budget sheet…can you afford everything?

Discuss/Problem-Solve your sketches and budget problems that may arise!

Show an adult your budget and sketches before moving on to Step 3!

Step 3 - Home Depot! Bring your budget and design to the Home Depot to

purchase your materials. Make sure you know your final total, and have your money

ready for the cashier. Do you know how much change you should get back?

Load your vehicle with your materials, and get ready to build!
