A bed, and a reason to get out of it Think how you’d feel if you lost everything. No home, no bed, no food, no warmth, no comfort, no future, no family, no friends, no dignity and no reason to carry on. Night shelters and hostels are a lifeline for many, but if you’re kicked out of your hostel at 8 a.m. what do you do for 12 hours? Aimlessly walk the street and get demoralised and depressed. At Em-maus previously homeless people stop being part of

the problem and start being part of the solution. In Emmaus our residents are known as “Companions” and they get accommodation, food, clothing and a small weekly allowance. In return they sign off unem-ployment benefits and work at collecting, re-furbishing and re-selling donated household items to help sup-

port themselves and their Community. In an Emmaus Community Companions have work to do, and feel valued. Companions are accepted for who they are now, not judged for things that have gone on in the past. It’s a chance to learn new skills, get healthy, build physical and mental strength, grow self

confidence and self respect.

It’s a home and companionship and a new start to tackle issues which dragged you down in the past. “Coming to Emmaus brings you back to life.” An Emmaus community relies on money and voluntary support from lots of different people to get started. But once Communities are established they work to become self-financing through their recycling business.

Did you know?

Emmaus Communities generate

£11 for every £1 invested.

A new Social Return on Investment (SROI) study fore-casts that Emmaus Communities generate £11 each year in social, environmental and economic return for every £1 invested. The research was launched at a reception at the House of Lords in November 2012 and attended by Emmaus UK President Terry Waite and representatives from third sector organisations and the Government . The report finds that the Emmaus model is highly suc-

cessful in providing a place for people in vulnerable housing situations to rebuild their lives by offering them meaningful work and support. The most significant benefits relate to substantial improvements in residents’ physical and mental health, including reductions in sub-stance misuse. Other important outcomes include gain-ing work experience, skills and training; reductions in offending and re-building relationships with family and friends. Emmaus Communities also generate significant savings to the taxpayer. For the 21 Communities included in the research, the study forecasts that the present value of savings to local and national Government stands at al-most £6 million per year.

Making an Impact

Key outcomes for Government from Emmaus’ work in-clude fewer rough sleepers, fewer people claiming bene-fits, reduced substance misuse, reduced crime and fewer health problems. The full report, along with a short and longer summary, is available at http://www.emmaus.org.uk/sroi.

Our Shop

We already have one small shop in Salford selling afford-able quality second hand furniture and household goods at very modest prices. The address is 100 Seaford Road, Salford, M6 6EP. It’s open Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday & Saturday from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. The shop is run by a team of loyal and hard working vol-unteers, mostly local Salfordians. It opened in November 2009. Since then it has made £36,000 towards establish-ing the Salford Emmaus Community.

We will soon be opening a much bigger shop in Emmaus House, 101 Fitzwarren Street, Salford M6 5RQ. If you would like to help:

We need volunteers to work in the shop, and van drivers.

Come to our shop and purchase good quality goods at good prices.

Donate items which we can resell in the shop.

“Keep on Running”

Keep on Running or should that be " When I'm 64!" Come to think of it, Paul McCartney didn't mention anything about competing in Charity Runs in his famous song.

That's no deterrent to Malcolm Sykes, himself 64, and a volunteer with Emmaus Salford. Malcolm ran in last year's Great Manchester Run to raise £700 for Emmaus Salford.

Malcolm says," It is an exciting time here in Salford. We have found a property at Unwin Court, now renamed Emmaus House, that will form a home for our Commu-nity. We need to raise all the money we can. Competing in The Manchester 10k, with over 30,000 entrants, is a great way to gain support for what we are trying to do. It also helps to keep me fit! "

Malcolm is following on from the fundraising effort of Ian Orrell, another volunteer with Emmaus Salford who raised over £6000 by walking from Lands End to John O’Groats in 2008.
