Gombotz , who starred at Southington High School, will be inducted in the high school player cate-gory. She is already a member of the SHS Hall of Fame.

“It’s a huge honor. I never – in my wildest dreams – would have expected to be in two hall of fames already in my life,” Gombotz said. “To be re-warded for having fun day in and day out on my high school

The Plainville Democratic Town Committee will meet Thursday, March 27, 7 p.m., in the Council Chambers at the Plainville Municipal Center. Agenda will include election of officers and convention delegates.

DTC meeting

In an effort to make es-calating prom dress prices — which can extend up to $600 — more affordable for girls, Kristen’s Kloset show-cases a solid selection of gently-used and new gowns, for a modest donation of $25 for a used dress and $35 for a new one.

Kristen’s Kloset wants all girls to be able to attend prom in beautiful dresses, at prices they can manage. The Southington Youth Services program has been collecting dresses, shoes and accesso-ries for eight years.

“The whole idea is for ev-eryone to get to go to their prom,” Director of Youth Services, Sue Saucier, said. “Anyone can come here. We don’t turn anyone away.”

Kristen’s Kloset’s 2014 grand opening was March 8.

Each year, Kristen’s Kloset sets up shop in a do-nated space. This will be the store’s second year in a row at the Southington Town Hall Annex, 93 Main St.

In preparation for prom season, Kristen’s Kloset vol-unteers gather to organize some 500 to 600 dresses by size and color, display jew-elry and accessories on ta-bles, hang purses, arrange shoes, and set up a dressing room space.

“I have found so many

great volunteers,” Saucier said. “I’m lucky enough to have them so we can be open for quite a few weeks.”

One volunteer, Sandi Varsell, a retired seamstress, does alterations for shop-pers. Also, she uses leftover fabric to make purses and handbags. Varsell has even made gowns for girls.

“She goes above and be-yond. She’s just wonderful,” Sue Williams, a youth coun-selor, said.

Kristen’s Kloset be-gan as a cause to honor a Southington middle school student, Kristen Warner, who was in a fatal car acci-dent in 2004.

“Her family wanted to do something, and they came up with this idea,” Saucier explained. “We loved the idea, as it’s youth-related.”

Since Warner ’s fam-ily initiated the project, Southington Youth Services has expanded Kristen’s Kloset. Saucier said the idea of buying and wearing used clothing has changed over the years. “I don’t think it’s a stigma anymore. People are thinking differently, and a lot of girls come in here.”

If a dress is out of style or hasn’t sold in a few years, it is donated to Goodwill.

Kristen’s Kloset relies on community donations, from dresses and accessories, to monetary contributions, to

space to set up.Along with help from in-

dividuals, Kristen’s Kloset has received assistance from service clubs, as well as lo-

for students, because prom costs are so astronomical. There are so many students who can’t afford prom, so

Southington officials are considering new rules for tattoo parlors, saying health practices at such companies are largely unregulated.

No complaints have been filed against any of the five lo-cal tattoo studios in the past two years, according to Shane Lockwood, Southington-Plainville Regional Health District director. A state requirement that tattoo artists receive a certifica-tion will take effect in July. Southington and Plainville officials say they want to make sure hygienic practices are followed in the parlors.

“There’s a consensus that perhaps having certain pro-tocols in place in regards to cleanliness might be a good thing,” said Plainville Town Manager Robert E. Lee.

“We’ve come to realize that tattoo parlors aren’t re-ally much regulated at all,” he said. “This could become

a serious health problem.”Barbershops are already

regulated for similar health reasons, Lee said. The re-gional health district’s board talked with Chad Lockhart of Hartford County Tattoos

about whether an ordinance was needed.

“He was supportive of the notion that we should be set-ting some standards,” Lee said.

Lockhart couldn’t be

reached March 17.Jay “Phoenix” Farino,

owner of Phoenix Ink Tattoo on Meriden-Waterbury Turnpike, said all his artists are certified with the state al-though it’s not required.

“We’ve chosen to be; it’s safer that way,” he said.

He had little comment on further regulation of his business.

“The towns are going to do what they’re going to do,” Farino said.

He was mostly concerned about tattoo artists operating out of their houses with little oversight.

Late last year, Wallingford passed a tattoo and body piercing ordinance requir-ing such establishments to get a $100 permit and sub-mit to two yearly, random inspections.

The state’s licensing will involve a $250 fee, taking a course on the prevention of blood-borne diseases and previous tattoo experience or training.

S o u t h i n g t o n To w n Manager Garry Brumback said the state’s law was a good start but didn’t deal with the operation of tattoo parlors.

“It really is just establish-ing standards for cleanliness and health safety,” he said of the town ordinance under consideration. “I’m surprised we don’t already have one.”

John Barry, a Democratic t o w n c o u n c i l o r i n Southington and member of the regional health board, was also in favor of the new regulation.

“It’s a safeguard I think is important to protect peo-ple who want to get tattoos,” he said. “I think you have to be proactive to prevent problems.”

Lockwood said he’s look-ing at the ordinances of other Connecticut towns concern-ing tattoo parlors to cre-ate one for Southington and Plainville. The health district may have a sample ordinance by the summer.

Officials consider adding rules for tattoo parlors

Tattoo artist and business owner Jay “Phoenix” Farino works on a tattoo for Brett Eaton, of East Granby, at his business, Phoenix Ink Tattoo, in Southington. Farino has heard about the new proposed tattoo regulations and doesn’t see them as a bad thing if they help to curtail underground, unlicensed tattooers. | (Christopher Zajac / Special to The Citizen)

The Plainville Board of Education and the Plainville Community Schools’ Naming Committee will hold an in-duction ceremony April 21 at Plainville High School for the Memorial Wall of Honor, ac-cording to Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Jeffrey Kitching.

The ceremony, honor-ing inductee in memoriam Eugene Millerick, will be held at the Memorial Wall of Honor in the east corridor outside of the PHS pool. The ceremony will take place at 6 p.m., with a reception follow-ing immediately after in the PHS cafeteria.

Millerick served as a mem-ber of the Plainville Board of Education for 12 years, also serving as Chair during his tenure. In 1986, he was elected to the first of four, two-year terms in the Connecticut House of Representatives, representing the 22nd dis-trict. Millerick was also a for-mer chairman of the Plainville Economic Development Commission, member of the Plainville Sewer Commission, Plainville Historical Society, and Plainville Knights of Columbus, and was active in the United Way campaigns in Plainville and Bristol. He is a former president and long-time member of the

Plainville Rotary Club, and was a Paul Harris Fellow for the organization.

The Memorial Wall of Honor is a permanent tribute to recognize local individ-uals for their service to the educational community. The memorial was established by the Plainville Community Schools’ Naming Committee, which includes Chairperson Lorri Goldsmith, William Petit Sr., Steve Martino, Lynn Davis, Kathy Pugliese, Becky Tyrrell, and Ex-Officio mem-bers Andrea Saunders, Jeffrey Kitching and Steven LePage.

The Memorial Wall of Honor Induction Ceremony event is open to the public.

Earl C. Snyder FARMINGTON — Earl C. Snyder, Jr., 66, of Farmington,

passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, March 15, 2014 at John D e m p s e y Hospital. Born in Bristol on

Dec. 9, 1947, he was one of seven children to the late Earl C. “Tickey” Snyder, Sr. and Etta L. (Swett) Snyder. A lifelong resident, he was a 1966 graduate of Plainville High School, where his love for softball began. He went on to play for sever-al years as a well- known and respected player with the ASA Region 8 and 9, sponsored by Gartenhaus. Earl enlisted in the U.S. Army, proudly serving his country during Vietnam as an expert rifleman, and was honorably discharged as a Sergeant in 1970. He was a strong supporter of veterans’ organizations, attended many of his re-unions and recently recon-nected with some of his fellow brothers from the H troop, of which he was very proud. He was an en-gineer in the manufacturing industry for many years, and enjoyed his retirement playing golf, shooting pool, and spending time with his family, who all share his

sense of humor and will miss him dearly. He is survived by his son, Earl C. Snyder, III, his wife, Kristen, and their children, Rayah, Peighton, and Sage, all of Raleigh, N.C.; his daughter, Rhonda Wisniewski, her husband, Michael, and her son, Ty, all of Plainville; his brothers and sisters, Lawrence and his wife, Martha, of Pla-inville, Gloria and Steven Hartke, of Rockfall, Robert, of Plainville, David, of Pla-inville and Janet, of Cali-fornia; his longtime com-panion, Carol Maguda, her children, Debby DiLoreto and her son, Nathan with whom he shared a special bond, Dennis DiLoreto, Jr., Marc DiLoreto and his wife, Michelle, and their son, Alec; many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, and dear friends. He was predeceased by his sister, Susan Snyder Hooper, and his sister-in-law, Colleen. Words of remembrance, followed by military hon-ors will be held at the con-clusion of the visitation. In lieu of flowers, Earl may be remembered with contribu-tions to No Vet Left Behind, 14 Jewett St, Ansonia, CT 06401. The economic and education benefit of providing high quality preschool services

Plainville Community Schools is committed to making sure all children are successful in our schools by being ready to learn. To that end, a committee chaired by Assistant Superintendent, Dr. Maureen Brummett, has been meeting since last year to explore an expansion of our current preschool pro-grams. Currently, Plainville serves students with identi-fied special needs in a variety of programs offered at Linden Street School. The committee was asked to investigate the provision of services to stu-dents who might not be ready for kindergarten.

As part of their work, members of the committee have been visiting public school districts in the area that already provide these services. They have also been reviewing research about the economic and education benefit of providing high quality preschool services to students. Specifically, the committee reviewed the re-search of the Perry Preschool Project, which is widely re-garded as a landmark study establishing the human and financial value of high-qual-ity preschool education. The study followed a group of stu-dents for more than 40 years. Half of the students who par-

ticipated in the study at-tended a high quality pre-school, while the other half did not. The study found that students who attended pre-k had

an immediate educational benefit such as higher test scores and lower special ed-ucation identification rates. The study also found that 71 percent of those in the program group graduated from regular or adult high schools or received General Education Development (GED) certification, com-pared with 54 percent of those in the no-program group. Additionally, the pre-school program group had significantly higher average achievement scores.

A distinctive feature of this study has been its economic cost-benefit analysis. Adults in the program group were four times more likely (29 percent) to earn $2,000 or more per month than were adults in the no-program group (7 percent). Almost three times as many (36 percent) owned their own homes, compared to those in the no-program group (13 percent). More than two times as many (program 30

percent, no program 13 per-cent) owned a second car. As adults, 59 percent of those in the program group had re-ceived welfare assistance or other social services at some time, compared to 80 per-cent of those in the no-pro-gram group. The analysis also weighed the cost of the pre-school program against the economic benefits resulting from the program — higher earnings, reduced incidences of special education services, welfare assistance, and crime. The age-27 analysis found that every public dollar spent on the program saved $7.16 in tax dollars.

The State of Connecticut requires every student en-tering kindergarten to be assessed in the fall. Over the last few years, our fall as-sessment data indicate that about 30 percent of Plainville students entering our kinder-garten program are already behind their peers in read-iness skills. These findings along with the committee’s research prompted me to include additional preschool teachers in the proposed 2014-15 Budget. The research is clear and undeniable, and the trend in Plainville regard-ing the readiness of many of our youngest students is concerning. The preschool

Letters to the Editor

Setting the record straight

To the editor:As a child, I was extremely

blessed and honored to have had my father, John Spisak Sr., who taught me to hunt, fish and trap and to respect all of God’s creatures of the wild.

I spent a few summers up in Maine on my great grand-mother’s farm, and this was the turning point in my life to where I learned to appre-ciate wildlife, the hard way.

I clearly remember the most horrible thing I ever witnessed as a 6-or-7-year-old child. We were out in multiple pastures bailing hay behind the huge machines and my great grandfather was walking with me car-rying a 3-or-4-foot rounded handled razor sharp sickle.

I quickly learned why he had it, as the machine un-covered a rabbit’s nest and instantly he began to swing with extreme accuracy and vengeance.

I ran so fast back to the house screaming and upset to my grandma and ex-plained exactly what he had

done to those bunnies.“Good, those varmints

destroy our crops and gar-dens,” she said.

Needless to say I was not a big fan of their actions or thoughts on wild life.

I went the opposite way with every strange animal I found or ran across. I even remember on different oc-casions as a child bringing injured wild birds and other creatures to Ruth Hummel of Plainville.

To sum this up, I find it hard to believe that over the years people have made uneducated judgments and negative comments about others, or me. People who were not educated on the state and federal laws when it comes to turtles or any kind of wildlife before they spoke.

The old saying “think be-fore you speak” comes to mind.

“If people were more like animals life would be peace-ful, calm and full of uncondi-tional love.” – Mark Twain.

As I came out of the Plainville post of-fice one morning, I noticed that a new shop had opened directly across the street—Z Consignment. I love consignment be-cause you can find great bargains and, from a recycling standpoint, it is covers one of the three “R’s” of recycling – Reusing.

I stopped into Z Consignment to chat with the owner, Zaneta, who told me that her own con-

signment store shopping morphed into a dream of owning her consign-ment store. She started

frequenting con-signment stores during her weight loss journey be-cause she did not want to spend money on a new

wardrobe for each size she dropped.

Last year, Zaneta saw Jillian Michaels speak at the Bushnell. Michaels told the audience to not put off dreams until to-morrow. With that inspira-tion, Zaneta is making her

expansion we are proposing will target specific four year-old students and help get them off to the positive start in school they deserve.

The committee will con-tinue to meet to help the ad-ministration develop and plan for the preschool expansion. In addition, the committee anticipates presenting their findings and program recom-mendations to the Board of Education in April or May.

dream a reality in Plainville today.

Z Consignment offers a multitude of wardrobe items including jackets, pants, scrubs, prom dresses, belts, scarves, etc. Not only can you find great bargains, but you can make money by go-ing through your closet. Z Consignment pays a 50/50 split on items sold, and if your item does not sell at the end of 60 days, you have the option of picking up your item or having it do-nated to a local organization, such as the Plainville Food Pantry.

Watch out for a coupon in the Bargain Book the first week of April.

To sum up, the benefits are finding bargains, making money, reusing clothing, supporting a local busi-

ness owner, saving on gas by shopping in town, and potentially donating to local organizations.

The Recycling and Solid Waste Commission hopes that you will check out her shop and other consignment shops (sporting, clothing, baby items, tools, etc.) in Plainville and in surround-ing towns.

Jennifer Zakrzewski is a member of the Plainville Recycling & Solid Waste Commission along with Richard Ireland, Jr., Rebecca Ireland, George Fensick, III, Marie Cassidy, Wayne Fish and Kathleen Cole.

and sharing his story with other survivors.

“I am in the best physical condition of my life because of Livestrong,” Varsell said. “I wanted to stay involved be-cause this meant so much to me, and I thought I could lead by example and show what is

possible.”Participants receive a family

membership while in the pro-gram and family members are welcome to exercise with the participant in the program.

“Family members go through a lot as well, so this is a nice way for them to take care of them-selves, too,” Chevalier said.

Donald Venti, who under-went surgery for kidney cancer, learned about the Livestrong

program after seeking out the YMCA to help him lose 100 pounds in order to be consid-ered for a kidney transplant.

“This is a fabulous program with a lot of support and en-couragement,” Venti said. “It’s so much more than just exer-cise, it has helped change my lifestyle.”

Venti has lost 65 pounds so far and is on the kidney trans-plant list.

Both Versell and Venti, mem-bers of the Livestrong advisory board at Wheeler YMCA, credit the program for helping them build healthy bodies and minds while continuing on their path to wellness.

“There is so much stress in cancer, and you have to find a way to deal with it,” Venti said. “To have something designed for people specifically with can-cer is just wonderful.”

“It was not just about the physical fitness, it’s the camara-derie and friendship among the participants and being around

people who truly understand what you are going through,” Versell said. “This has been a wonderful journey, and so fulfilling.”

The Wheeler YMCA is look-

ing for new participants for the next Livestrong session, which begins in May. For more infor-mation, call (860) 793-9631 or email [email protected].

Gombotz coaches basket-ball and softball at PHS. She has worked with the Blue Devil girls basketball team for 13 years, the last six as head coach.

The Connecticut Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame, founded in 1988, includes such notable names as Shea Ralph, Jennifer Rizzotti and Geno Auriemma.

Inductees are chosen in six categories: high school player, high school coach, college player, college coach, referee, and honorary.

Gombotz, one of seven in-ductees this year, will be en-shrined in the high school player category along with Chryssandra Watts, a standout at Bristol Eastern and a mem-ber of the 1992 USA Olympic handball team, and Bloomfield High School and UConn leg-end Nykesha Sales.

The 2014 induction cer-emony will take place Wednesday, April 23 at the Cascade Banquet Facility in Hamden.

SportsBaseball junkie escapes polar vortex

LAKELAND, Fla. -- We missed a free pizza by a row.

At Detroit Tigers’ games at Joker Marchant Stadium here in Lakeland, they announce a seat number and five folks to either side of that person get a freebie. In the fourth inning, they gave away pizzas -- to the row behind us.

But I and buddy Lou Milardo, the retired legend-ary softball coach at Hale-Ray High School, have no gripe. See, we’re not there with you enjoying Connecticut’s lovely weather. Oh, it was chilly here for the Tigers vs. Braves game. 62. Brrr.

But the next day it bounced up to 72 and we took in a game at Champion Stadium at ESPN’s Wide World of Sports in Disney World. Got nicely sunned during the day before the game. And the

other day, when it was 81, Typhoon Lagoon was lovely.

The games so far have been fun. There’s a little local flavor, too. Brad Ausmus of Cheshire is the new manager of the Tigers, who got boxed about the head and shoulders by the Braves, 5-2.

We got to see UConn’s George Springer, now of the Astros, popup against the Braves. That was a dog of a game as the Parade of Pitchers Nobody Ever Heard Of, walked the ballpark.

But on second thought, how much of a dog can it be in the midst of this weather?

I will tell you that leaving Connecticut was a night-mare. Black ice all over the place. I counted eight acci-dents between my home in Middletown and the New York State Line. Yet there were drivers oblivious to ev-erything, zipping along at 70 miles an hour despite radio

warnings of the ice.But hey, in today’s world,

folks get in their cars, pop in a CD and are oblivious to the world. Like most high school kids who always have music in their ears. I suspect that evolution will shortly see to it that kids are born with ear plugs and devices attached to their hips. Heck, would make life easier.

But I digress.Joker Marchant Stadium is

an older ballpark, just off I-4, or The Four, as the natives call it. Since Florida drivers are the worst in the history of human life, I-4 often looks like a junkyard as cars rou-tinely collide.

Again, I digress.Jason Heywood slammed

a home run for the Braves. Miguel Cabrera, the greatest hitter in the game, hit the ball hard for the Tigers, but didn’t

Baseball

have much to show for it. But the game moved quickly and that was nice.

The people are wonderful. We were parked in a church lot for $5 by a lady wearing a shirt that said Volunteer for Christ. She practically killed us with kindness. Inside the stadium, along about the seventh inning, a couple was announced from their seats behind home plate. He was 98, his wife was 96, they’ve been married 77 years and they have been Tigers’ Spring Training season ticket hold-ers since, oh, the Hoover ad-ministration. Lovely moment and the crowd went nuts in showing their support for the lovely folks.

The prices, even at minor league venues, are not cheap. But I did find a $5, uh, lem-onade. Made me nostalgic. A hot dog -- a big, fat, juicy one with chips -- was $6.50. Since I’m used to Yankee and Red Sox prices, I thought I was at the baseball version of Walmart.

However, I did sucker for a $28 T-shirt. Hey, it had the lo-gos of all the teams that train in Florida and said: Spring Training 2014 on the front. Gotta buy it.

Champion Stadium in WDW is so clean, so new, it’s almost antiseptic. I fig-ured they washed the whole joint with Purell before they opened the doors. But it is a gorgeous place. Parking is free, which for Disney is an

upset, and the whole place has fresh flowers and per-fectly cut grass -- and I’m talking about the area outside the ballpark. In the park, you could eat off the floor.

We sat about 14 rows be-hind the Braves dugout in a game that threatened to become the longest spring training game in history. The only good pitcher was Craig Kimbrel, the Braves’ closer, who belongs on another planet. In his first appearance of the spring, he popped 96 MPH a couple of times.

All the other pitchers would have a hard time mak-ing your local Legion team. We left in the seventh, it was 5-3 Astros, there were 16 hits and I ran out of toes and fingers trying to count the walks. I figured three and half hours for a spring training game was enough.

But I did say it was 72, right?

We’re going to hit Osceola County Stadium in Kissimmee (Astros), Steinbrenner Field in Tampa (Yankees), Bright House Stadium in Clearwater (Phillies) and Space Coast Stadium in Melbourne (Nationals). I’ll tell y’all (sorry, Southern influence) about these games soon.

Even though the Arctic rules Connecticut, baseball is here. It’s coming north in a month. Have faith. There will be a spring.

Trust me.Jim Bransfield is a longtime

contributor to Record-Journal weekly publications. A retired teacher, Bransfield’s loves in-clude baseball, road trips and writing about Connecticut high school sports.

From Page 19

The Plainville High School boys swim team finished 13th out of 23 teams at the Class S state championships, held last week at Wesleyan University in Middletown. The local boys tallied 129 total points.

The Blue Devils’ top finishers were the 400 freestyle relay team, which placed 11th. The foursome, comprised of senior Justin Freitas, junior Trevor Roy, sopho-more Jarred Karal, and freshman Lorenzo Samperi, clocked a time of 3:51.85.

Plainville’s 200 freestyle relay team also had a solid performance, finishing 13th with a time of 1:46.95. Freitas, Karal, and Samperi were joined by senior Shayla Beausoleil.

Freitas also did well individually. He fin-ished 12th in the 50 freestyle and 14th in the 100 freestyle. His 50 time of 24.20 was only three seconds off the winning pace and his 100 time of 53.25 left him five seconds be-hind the victor.

In other action, Plainville’s 200 med-ley relay, comprised of sophomore Joshua Schilling, Roy, Karal and Beausoleil, landed in 15th place with a time of 2:04.05.

‘WHAT I DID LAST SUMMER’

Plainville High School presented the play “What I Did Last Summer” by A. R. Gurney, March 20, 21 and 22. The play takes place during the waning days of World War II in a summer vacation community on the Canadian shore of Lake Erie. It is a coming of age story about a 14-year-old boy. The story is both funny and heart-warming and is based on the playwright’s own life. The production was directed by Jeff Blanchette, the technical director was T.J. Riccardo, and the costuming was done by Barbara Willard. Seated, from left, are cast members: April Pavano, Erin Brochu, and Tyrah Green. Standing, from left: Nicholas Zaleski, Amy Couch, and Stephen Gallo. | (Submitted)

Emmy Award winning FOX CT meteorologist Rachel Frank recently visited sixth-graders at the Middle School of Plainville, providing an overview of her career as a female meteorologist. The visit, supported by the Petit Family Foundation, highlighted women in the sciences, and enhanced the students’ knowledge of weather-related topics.
