Recently in Placitas and other areas of SandovalCounty, several U.S. Mailbox clusters have beenvandalized and mail stolen from the boxes. This hasbeen happening all over the state and due to TaxSeason, I suspect it will continue.

On February 8, Deputies arrested two individualsin a stolen car who were breaking into the newspa-per machines at the Merc. Information wasobtained that indicates the individuals wereinvolved in the theft of mail from the cluster mail-boxes in Placitas, Rio Rancho, and ABQ. SandovalCounty Detectives, along with the Postal Inspector,are working this case.

A week later, on February 17, Deputies arrestedthree more individuals in a blue truck who werebreaking into mailbox clusters in the Placitas TrailsWest area. Sandoval County Detectives, along withthe Postal Inspector, are working this case.

Postal Inspectors across the country work hard toprotect your mail. But with deliveries to more than

one hundred million addresses, the Postal Inspec-tion Service can’t do the job alone. Here’s what youcan do to protect your mail from thieves:

• Use the letter slots inside your Post Office foryour mail, or hand it to a letter carrier.

• Pick up your mail promptly after delivery.Don’t leave it in your mailbox overnight. If you’reexpecting checks, credit cards, or other negotiableitems, ask a trusted friend or neighbor to pick upyour mail.

• If you don’t receive a check or other valuablemail you’re expecting, contact the issuing agencyimmediately.

• If you change your address, immediately notifyyour Post Office and anyone with whom you dobusiness via the mail.

• Don’t send cash in the mail.• Tell your Post Office when you’ll be out of

town, so they can hold your mail until you return.• Report all suspected mail theft to a Postal

Inspector.

• Consider starting a neighborhood watch pro-gram. By exchanging work and vacation scheduleswith trusted friends and neighbors, you can watcheach other’s mailboxes (as well as homes).

• Consult with your local Postmaster for the mostup-to-date regulations on mailboxes, including theavailability of locked centralized or curbside mail-boxes.

Please be alert for any suspicious persons and/oractivity in your neighborhood. Do not confront sus-picious persons. Simply document as much infor-mation as you safely can (from a distance) thatwould aid the Sheriff’s Office in identifying the sus-picious persons /activity. Report suspicious per-sons/ activities to the Sheriff’s Office via SandovalCounty Regional Emergency Communications Cen-ter’s non-emergency telephone number: 867-4581.

If you know or suspect that a burglary or anothercrime is in progress, immediately report it to theSandoval County Sheriff’s Office by dialing 911.
